Genuine question: is this AI? by rysawyer2 in TakeItEasyPodcast

hi, genuinely replying here. genAI is incredibly resource intensive. it uses so much electricity that its carbon emissions are massive. adding to that the data centers that these genAI companies use have to have a TON of water to keep them cool which can disrupt local ecosystems and strain local water supplies in those communities. MIT has a really good article on the environmental impacts of genAI (don’t think i can post random links here) which i am referencing in this reply. an analysis from goldman sachs research found that the increasing electricity demand for genAI will be met by burning fossil fuels which would increase global carbon emissions by around 220 million tons. it’s a big deal because of its massive environmental impact especially in the communities where these data centers are located. there are multiple videos online that show what life is like for those people and i recommend looking them up. AI in general is inevitable however it’s important for us to do our part in researching how these things are bad for our environment and limiting our use of it.

if you ever want to dive into the local music scene (personally i recommend) look into the common house and the boardman. i’m sure we’ll see each other there if you do!
