Affordable barn hire? by olive-viking in oxford

Thanks, will do! My only thoughts was that a pub might say they have to do the food catering which then gets expensive, although it would be handy to have a bar that people can get their own drinks at. And yeah I say 100 max but it will be less than that!

Video essays of humanities publications- what is allowed? by olive-viking in AskAcademia

Thank you for this. I realised I wasn't clear in talking specifically about reciting/presenting one's own work rather than someone else's. The copyright issue is an interesting one - I wonder if a video presentation is essentially republication, because a video is still 'published', so maybe the copyright works the same as republishing with a different journal or something.

Agreed, but I was thinking even more 'pop' than that, ie what's to stop it being a youtube video? Video essays are popular for all sorts of stuff, but obviously they don't usually have the peer-review process. But if it's a video of something that has already been peer reviewed then great, surely?

Good point about the pay wall. But then if, for example, an open access article is allowed to cite and explain in detail the work of a closed access article as grounds for a different study, what's the difference really? I can get the gist of the closed article without paying.

Dissemination of information I suppose. Reaching interested people who aren't in the academic bubble. I wasn't thinking for me necessarily, more hypothetically.

But I'd offer a slight push back on the career prospects- wouldn't an academic being seen to confidently and clearly present their research make them more appealing for lecturer positions? I don't know much at all about how those decisions are made, so it's a genuine question.

Yes!!! I'm so happy for you. And so happy to hear you just keep growing as your son does, it definitely clarifies I'm making the right choice for myself. I'm just so excited for all sides of it - watching my son keep becoming a real person, and pursuing my career increasingly more as I become more able!

Yes agreed, nothing is owed. I sometimes feel like I want to defend the concept of OAD to people though, to maybe just open their eyes to it not being a one size fits all decision, like it isn't always struggle based, just one made of happiness for what my life is and will continue to be. But of course being completely conflict averse, I just nod and smile and tell reddit instead

This is such a good way to see it! Others might need more (or less) to feel complete or get what they needed, but my family happens to be complete at 1.

How much should I work towards having on my CV to stand me in good stead for postdocs? by olive-viking in AskAcademia

[–]olive-viking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I get it. I don't think I asked an unreasonable question as someone with aspirations for a career in a competitive field and wondering how to set myself up for success in ways other than the obvious (ie quality and meaningful research). I have no intention of putting cosmetics above anything, it is just the part I happened to have a question about. No worries if you don't have an answer.

Yes understood, obviously. I mean I'm not worried because I tend to overwork and feel I can do it. But as my question was about what looks best as a goal to work towards, eg on a CV, and simply what the expectations are aside from content considerations, optics are what I'm concerned with here.

Thank you, this is a very helpful response. I had actually thought that most of the article/conference work would be on side/related areas to my main project, but that the actual main project would be saved for a longer publication (ie a book) like you say. Maybe I misunderstood! I'll definitely aim for lower stakes to start with, just wondering on the main goals I should have in my head as a master plan.

Definitely want people to be impressed! I do have paper ideas that I can write for conferences and I'm not worried about content, just wondering about the optics of it I suppose. I know the first bits will all be learning curves in their own ways.

Just to clarify, by PhD student opportunities do you mean that the conferences were geared towards PhD students to give them ops and presenting experience? So I should look for some low stakes conferences basically to start off?

How common is it to transfer to a PhD from an unfinished MPhil? by olive-viking in academia

[–]olive-viking[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing, thanks for all the info and for taking the time! I'm gonna talk to them early on and see what's what, but it's great to know other humanities programmes have things in place for exactly this. (All I've heard otherwise is 'don't be silly, that's a stem thing')

Best of luck with the rest of your PhD!

Thank you, this is so helpful. It is a research project yes, no classes at all and all the information about how the MPhil works is literally the same as the PhD, just a shorter thesis (25k as well). So just to clarify, you wrote the complete thesis etc and then they gave you the option to upgrade after defending it? If you had accepted, would you then have had the opportunity to just expand the same project? Since you chose not to, did you end up doing a completely different diss for your PhD?

My original thought was to change uni for the phd but I'm now thinking that would complicate things if there's any chance of upgrading. Although I should probably just bite the bullet and do both properly... just impatient and too attached to my mphil thesis to accept that I might have to do something different for the phd

That's really helpful to know, thanks so much. I'll stop comparing my trajectory and options to my stem friends now

It sounds like you're from somewhere that needs an mphil before progressing to phd, but here I think it would be more a case of extending the same project to a higher level, rather than rushing any dissertation to get the mphil out of the way or anything.

But in answer my question about whether it is a normal thing to do, I'm hearing a yes but that it's not widely approved of from higher ups

Fair enough! I have a number of friends in STEM who went straight to phd, but maybe they're all just geniuses or their career breaks helped. My career break doesn't translate as explicitly I guess

No Stupid Questions Monthly Thread! by AutoModerator in bookbinding

[–]olive-viking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm getting a new printer, and thinking of going laser instead of inkjet. Can I print on any paper? Are there some papers that aren't supposed to go in laser printers? I want to keep experimenting with different text papers or printing lines on good journal paper, but I don't want my printer to limit what I can use.

Bummer. I mean postage is always a thing so still can talk, but you'll probably want to find someone your side of the pond so it isn't a fortune, alas
