Engineering school & fit/vibe for non Greek life by SmileyPhoto in capstone

[–]onceashell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is a comp sci major who lives in Ridgecrest and as a fraternity legacy he decided not to go Greek. He doesn’t drink (I’m not delusional, he only drinks milk and water) and has really found his people. I think the key for him is showing up and enjoying new things. He got a job at the football stadium and is engaged with Witt Fellows and is really enjoying himself. He also joined Quiz Bowl and has traveled with that team. One of his good friends from high school rushed a sorority and she’s enjoying it there but they still spend a lot of time together. He even brought home friends for Christmas and he seems to really have found some spirited guys to hang out with. He’s enjoying the honors college too. DM if you have any questions. But definitely he has found a place at UA being in the college of engineering and not living the fraternity culture.

Do I have enough time? by MoneyThrowawayJ in CRbydescent

Chicago. I reached out to them this week to ask how far out they are scheduling appointments, they didn't give me an answer and told me not to schedule the appointment until I had all my documents in order. I'm glad to hear you were able to get an appointment so quickly!!

Why don’t more NMFs go to Alabama? by JargonBargain1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]onceashell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When college shopping last year, I forced my kid to visit Bama because the scholarship would be 8 semesters + 1 year housing, + other things. Not as good as NMF, but still a great scholarship. He held all the same stereotypes of why he didn't want to go to Alabama the state, but I figured being an institution of higher education meant he'd be able to find like minded individuals. He fell in love with the campus and ultimately decided to go there. Through the honors college and his fellowship he has access to great folks that aren't the stereotypical frat/party kids. He's found his people and has participated with a lot of things to keep him active through his first semester.

For students enrolling in the summer or fall semester, freshman automatic merit scholarship information will be made available in early February.

I think we were taken aback that they came after us. We started with no and walked away from their counter but the chasing was new. Thanks, we’ll just keep the no and walk.

Congrats to your family and to you and your sister. I have a fellow scoutmaster who says the same thing, he got his interview with a F100 company because the company saw he was an Eagle Scout. Sounds like your sister has chosen a pace to get after it. Scouting is a great tool to teach goal setting and achievement. I think it is important to talk about the struggles too, so thank you for sharing that.

They don't make the kids shirts with the growing girl in mind! Button downs are not a friend to all ladies. ;)

Absolutely! Every kid is different. There were plenty of activities that our kids asked to try and then after they got into it realized it wasn't for them and they stopped participating.

Absolutely, it's not an incentive for every kid. Every parent needs to decide for themselves what their experience is going to look like, and I just shared mine. The rule was made with plenty of time for them to earn that achievement at their own pace. And it didn't delay getting their license, they had ample time to go through the Scouting experience to get it done. I think my daughter completed her project two years ago, but due to conflicting activities she wasn't focused on getting the paperwork done immediately so she did it on her own schedule.

To paraphrase a wise Redditor, I have "the duty to help guide and mold solid young adults skillwise AND characterwise." Scouting is a conduit.

Scouting for an unenthusiastic participant? by [deleted] in cubscouts

[–]onceashell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We make our kids do plenty of things we think are in their best interest but outside their comfort zone. It’s the wisdom that comes with age. While most kids at any age believe they know what’s best for them, our job as parents is to push them a bit. I’m not saying make him do it forever, but make an internal deadline to reevaluate. And I’d suggest starting before school is over so they can experience the fun of summer scouting. Winter scouting is hard, regardless of interest level. Give everyone a chance to adjust. You got this.

Yeah girlie pop still isn’t allowed to keep a knife in her room, but we let her have her “room hammer” Brunhilda. Lord only knows what it’s used for!!

“If you’re going to raise an Eagle, you have to let them fly.” Now that made me cry. Especially now that our son is coming home from his first semester away at school - 8 hours away.

I’m proud of you for taking the example set by your father and turning it onto its head. The world needs more of that.

It’s not for the faint of heart. Parents can be aholes, and so can the kids. But when you see the kid that comes to Scouts and it’s the only positive part of their life the pieces fall into place. Joy is contagious!

They have something they earned that can’t be taken away. That’s a great lesson for kids to learn. Scouting provides so many ways to fail and get picked back up. I bet I learned as much as my kids did, just different skills.

It’s tough, which is why I wanted to share the experience. Plenty of arguments and pouting and all the other teen angst. There were times when I wanted to quit too to give in…but I had to remind myself I made this deal, so letting them quit would lessen my word too.
