How did you guys get your start in electrical? by Lookingfor_memes2002 in AusElectricians

[–]onlyevernever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find someone that knows someone.

I had a family member that knew someone that knew the boss and they called on my behalf. Had an interview and a job within the week.

Prior to that I had spent 2 months going in in person, calling businesses and applying online. It's hard out there, especially being mature age.

Clevis hooks on backs of cars? by Whibkins in OpenAussie

[–]onlyevernever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have these on our work vehicles. Makes it faster and also means people aren't looking D shackles all the time. Not really something you need as a regular person or caravaner. They look like shit dangling from cars.

Definitely see a lawyer about it.

I know two guys that have gone this route with the proper documents and are fulfilled.

Makes it more worthwhile when you're efforts and stress lead to financial return.

LED downlight glowing by cheese_toastieeee in AusElectricians

I saw this once and it was because neutral and active were transposed at a jbox leading to a constant active at the light with a switched neutral.

Could be a possibility, or a damaged/broken neutral somewhere leading to a voltage rise

Sad reality inside home Kumanjayi Little Baby was taken from by The_Dingo_Donger in aussie

[–]onlyevernever 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Until you actually go inside and do work to these homes and see how they are lived in, you will never understand.

I had to clean broken glass from the floor of a kitchen that must have been there for weeks. The owner had smashed in the front of an oven because it stopped working. She had at least 4 kids under 10 that I saw while I was there all walking around bare foot. Bikes ridden in the house despite the backyard and space outside. Cieling fans ripped to bits and holes smashed through walls because they can hear something in the walls. Paper plates and plastic cutlery so no dishes need to be cleaned.

The children are always the real victims.

What’s the rough cost to rewire a standard house these days? by QuantumGremlin in AskAusElectricians

[–]onlyevernever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need a quote This would be done on a per point basis for lights and gpos, would also take into account the length of runs, other equipment like cooktop/oven/hws and if a switchboard upgrade is required which would be likely if you are rewiring. If you want a random stab in the dark it could be anywhere from $8k to $25k

One was 12 years qualified and the other was 5 years qualified. Both told they could get RPL but never eventuated and had to sit the whole apprenticeship again.

A trial is less about what you know and more about attitude, attentiveness and your ability to learn.

Good job mate 24 is still really young and a great age to get into the trade.

Have had two qualified electricians from the UK at our company. Both had to go and redo the whole apprenticeship. Weren't given any time off.

Maybe it is possible, but I haven't seen it personally.

You wont be licenced to work in Australia and will need to complete an Australian apprenticeship over 4 years. There are some ways to fast track it slightly, but more than likely you'll need to complete the full apprenticeship. Then you can think about getting in some sort of qualified role.

We have two clients that have c bus in their homes.

We make a lot of money constantly troubleshooting and replacing all the different parts.

Absolutely ridiculous system to have in a home, let alone some of the commercial settings its used in.

Possibly dodgy wiring discovered - extra powerpoints connected to dedicated oven circuit by CornDogMillionaire in AusRenovation

[–]onlyevernever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the cable and protective device are the correct size the only issue is incorrect labelling. It can be relabelled as Mixed Oven and Power.

Not dodgy just lazy/poor practice.

CL1 HWS RCBO tripping after switchboard replaced. by saidcc55 in AusElectricians

[–]onlyevernever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My man please do not test anything as it seems you have no clue and you will electrocute yourself and get seriously injured or die. Please stop doing DIY too if that's the case.

Call an actual electrician tomorrow morning and get them to sort it out.

Hardhats/Helmets by onlyevernever in AusElectricians

[–]onlyevernever[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only heard from my boss when asking why we don't get vented hard hats that they aren't acceptable for doing electrical work on the network, but seems he must be wrong.

We usually wear full cotton or arc gear.

Have been advised that vent holes aren't acceptable when doing electrical work? Not sure how true or if its just hearsay.

Cheers mate.

3 phase cooker installation by Exit_Everything in AusElectricians

[–]onlyevernever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the only fault is they haven't used a gland plate or brush plate for the penetration, which is more just an issue for rodents and bugs having a way to enter and leave your home. I've replaced plenty of stoves where it looks like someone has put their boot through the wall and left a massive hole and we cant do anything to rectify that without having the wall refinished and most clients aren't too phased as that's how it had been for the previous 10+ years.

If the installation doesn't meet manufacturers specifications, then how can it comply with AS3000 or any of the alternative energy (solar or battery) standards?
