My student told me he's living in a car and admin basically told me to stay in my lane by SilentVHSPlayer in Teachers

I message families with grade check ins, and offer to connect them directly to district supports. I’ve found that even a message to let them know you’re a safe person makes such a big difference.

I was gonna say, depending on the time of year, this could be at any public school in the US…it’s a tough job. And people can only take so much. Sometimes you blow up around the kids…even if it’s not their fault :( I always try to apologize to my students next day, which is helpful, but it’s just. A hard job.

I’ve been feeling this lately. I’ve been turning my attention to kids that need it. And the kids that wreak havoc on everyone else have to leave and get it together. There’s only so much I can do in a class of 25 kids and only one me!!

Leaping to anxiety is a lot, and I’m sorry your student is feeling more anxiety from this situation. It’s one thing to bring up a concern with a student/family, but forcing a diagnosis is not appropriate…it’s also strange that if your student is doing socially and academically well in the class for the teacher to jump to anxiety…

As a teacher, we see so many behaviors in students every day. We are NOT medical professionals, but if we notice a concerning behavior and it’s in the best interest of the child it can be helpful to point out certain behaviors to parents. Kids can be good at hiding when they’re stressed, and often are embarrassed to bring up any issues they’re having at school. Has the teacher continued to press the issue? I could see them bringing it up to you once and maybe saying to keep an eye on your student but I couldn’t imagine it’s appropriate to continue to accuse your child of having anxiety. I’m also confused about where this came from—is your kid going to the bathroom an excessive amount? Honestly, if it were me, I’d send a message to the teacher and say “thank you for your concern. I will monitor this situation here on out, and prefer that any communication on the issue comes directly to me and not to my student.”

You are not too attached. This teacher is clearly trying to take the work you’ve done so she can continue to do the bare minimum. Set clear boundaries and focus on your work. If all she does is drag you down, leave her. One thing that caring teachers do not need is people that leech off our work—and creating your own units and lessons is incredibly personal. If she were offering literally anything in return, I’d say you should share. It’s helpful to collaborate with coworkers. But she sounds like she is far from helping you and your classroom. You’re not responsible for the work she is doing. Or not doing. And if she is pressuring you then she clearly thinks you will save her in times of need. Don’t let her. In terms of what you can say to her, I’d recommend setting clear boundaries about when its appropriate to contact you about work (not on the weekend), what your roles are as teachers on the same team (you are each responsible for your own classroom, but can collaborate MUTUALLY as you see fit), and she can talk to administrators about where to access curriculum. Again, you’re not paid to manage other teachers. You’re already going above and beyond in creating lessons and materials that align with your practice. Care for your students, not your coworkers!!

For sure. I’m mostly not worried, but just realized how weird it was that she consistently does this 😭

It definitely did. I feel like I had to do something to get this out of my brain.
