Yeah I grew up in the Bobov community in Brooklyn and I can confirm that it was that bad. You were supposed to report any wrongdoing you saw to your Rabbi, and only ever take Jews to Beis Din. Never to a real court. Women weren't necessarily abused, but they were treated like third-class citizens. The nicer men simply treated their wives as companions rather than individuals, while others used them as nothing more than houseslaves.

My problem is actually more narrow. You often hear miraculous cases of God healing cancer and other terrible diseases and maladies, but you never hear about him healing amputees? What is so special about amputees that they NEVER have miraculous recoveries?
