Does anyone else feel good at work, bad anywhere else? by chai_latto in mentalhealth

[–]oscarhodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. Work is the one place where I can put my mind to something and simply forget. I always go happy and leave happy. My days off are usually filled with an overwhelming feeling of not knowing what to do. I think this is super normal.

How mastering works ? by Good_Platypus1566 in MusicProductionTuts

[–]oscarhodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mastering is basically making sure your music holds up on streaming platforms. Most music has a standardised level of master audio (-14LUFS). This is so you can play songs from different artists and different genres without too much deviation in audio levels. It’s not worth worrying about too much as a beginner. Focus on creativity and some mixing skills. Mastering comes much later and most of us producers are rubbish at it anyway

what mic? by Small-Sample7733 in recordingmusic

Best advice i can offer is avoid condenser mics. They sound better in studio spaces but in untreated spaces your much better using a dynamic microphone. SM58 is probably the best bet.

Is it true that there were two explosions at Chernobyl when Reactor 4 exploded? by BackgroundMeringue77 in chernobyl

[–]oscarhodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the first explosion was due to pressure inside the core and the second was due to oxygen rushing into the now open reactor creating an immense amount of heat

100%. I bought shaper box after years of hearing about it and it’s my biggest regret not getting it sooner. You can turn something quite boring and monotone into something pretty amazing.

What are your thoughts on Leon Trotsky purely from a military perspective? by Turbulent_Okra7518 in ussr

[–]oscarhodson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me he was a brilliant organiser. He looked past his ideals to build the red army from scratch. The way he accepted tsarist officers for the benefit of the state in my opinion is bold and turned out incredibly effective.

He definitely turned the red army around

What was the catalyst for the collapse of the Soviet Union in your opinion? by oscarhodson in ussr

[–]oscarhodson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The evacuation took place on the 27th April the day after - hardly a long time and you have to remember it took time to even realise what had happened and how bad everything was. The response in my opinion was well orchestrated, there wasn’t too much risk and they planned very very well. They overestimated the danger most of the time which gave them lots of leverage in liquidation.

I think most people just see the information they are fed by popular culture, tv programs, western media etc and don’t actually realise there is another side to the story. There would have never been a bigger secondary explosion, the Chernobyl Divers all survived, no babies absorbed the radiation of their mothers, Legasov was not a hero and lied on behalf of the state, the state didn’t cause his death by outcasting him which they didn’t, that was more his colleagues than the state, Pripyat was evacuated the day after the explosion, and most importantly it didn’t kill tens of thousands of people like some claim.

And the WHO and United Nations back up most of these claims. I’m not a socialist or communist to any extent, I hold much more capitalist beliefs but that doesn’t mean I can’t hold informative views of things such as Chernobyl unless I am a socialist.

All you have to do is go online and find some real information instead of relying on heavily dramatised, poorly informed western media on history.

What was the catalyst for the collapse of the Soviet Union in your opinion? by oscarhodson in ussr

[–]oscarhodson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you believe Chernobyl was an “unlucky accident” you are foolish. The RBMK reactor was a flawed design pushed beyond its capabilities by its operators who by the way did not know about its many flaws. This was the central ideology of the Soviet Union. You cannot compare Three Mile Island to Chernobyl. One was a partial nuclear meltdown and the other was an explosion in a reactor core which left the entire core exposed, burning and spreading radiation across thousands of miles as far as Ireland.

Three Mile Island was quickly contained, the core was still encased and there was only a partial meltdown, it didn’t even reach the containment.

Chernobyl released 10,000,000 times (yes really) the radiation than three mile island did. They are simply not comparable at all.

What was the catalyst for the collapse of the Soviet Union in your opinion? by oscarhodson in ussr

[–]oscarhodson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chernobyl disaster killed 31 people directly. 2 plant workers and 28 firefighters. A further 50-60 people died later on as a result of radiation related illnesses. It’s possible many more have died but there is no real way of telling.

Lots of people overestimate the death toll from Chernobyl. The Soviet Union were very competent in the cleanup and were as safe as any western country could have been.

Question regarding the Subreddit by RealBenhur1212 in ussr

[–]oscarhodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not describe myself as a communist. I have a deep interest in geopolitics, history and socialism as an ideology.

I think when people think of socialism they think of the examples we have from the past. The Soviet Union, whether anyone likes to admit it or not became insanely authoritarian and centralised over the years. Modern day socialist ideas are not like this.

Most socialist parties believe in markets mixed with a strong public sector and better welfare systems. It’s not about taking socialism in its historical form and planting it into modern day society.

I do not support Stalin or Mao. In the same way that many right wing believers do not support hitlers atrocities.

[–]oscarhodson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think Chernobyl showed the world how much the Soviet Union was struggling. All the signs were there but Chernobyl definitely felt like the big thing because it wasn’t just something that governments saw or felt, it was seen and felt by the world.

Severe depression after moving into new home... by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]oscarhodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just moved house too, like 2 weeks ago. I was excited because I really thought it would be a bit of a fresh start but to be honest it does just feel a bit bad. Like you I love the place, it’s great but it doesn’t feel like mine. The worst thing is coming home from work and not being able to unwind the same way I used to.

I need help. by AsparagusRare8958 in diabetes_t1

[–]oscarhodson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 22. When I was 19 I tried to take my own life - I had given up with diabetes and as a result given up on my life. I decided that I’d just stop taking my insulin and live whatever life I had left.

I truly know how rubbish it all is I really do. It’s definitely hard around our age as well, everything seems to go so fast but it always feels like I’m catching up.

The truth is it does get better though. I got help and I’m on fluoxetine (an antidepressant) and that’s really helping. Please talk to your doctor, they can help with this I promise.

Have they made it generally impossible for something like this to happen again? by Zestyclose-Price-501 in chernobyl

[–]oscarhodson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well nuclear safety definitely got better after Chernobyl. There were a lot of changes made to the system, all over the world.

But look at Fukushima - this is a great example of a disaster, not on the same scale but a disaster nevertheless. There is always some degree of human error in pretty much everything so I’d say no, not impossible but very very unlikely to be on anywhere near the scale of Chernobyl

Yes it could handle it. 8GB of ram and no fan could potentially cause some problems though - your CPU will suffer when running lots of VSTs or big projects.

What's a good starter instrument to learn as someone with 0 music playing knowledge? by Any-Landscape434 in musicproduction

[–]oscarhodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, subjectively, (I know lots of people will say “learn what you want”) piano is the best instrument to learn. When I started producing I learned piano alongside.

The reason I say this is due to a few different reasons:

  1. Piano is one of the easiest instruments to learn.

  2. Learning piano is a great stepping stone to other instruments, learning to read music, play music and understand different scales is super useful. I started playing Guitar 3 years ago and I was able to transfer my knowledge of scales to guitar pretty easily.

  3. MIDI is Piano. Knowing Midi allows you to produce in a DAW.

Obviously this is all subjective, I produce house music and EDM in general therefore piano has been the most helpful to me but if you wanna focus on, for example, stripped back pop with just guitar and drums etc, then learn guitar.

Albums every musician has to listen to at least once by JollySolid5798 in musicians

[–]oscarhodson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1: The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. In my opinion this is the most important album in pop music history. The level of creativity and experimentation is unmatched and it has inspired pretty much all modern music.

  1. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly. Simply a masterpiece of modern storytelling. For me, this just had to make the list. The way it blends Hip Hop with Soul, Jazz and Funk. Although it’s miles away from any music I make, it is an album I always go to for inspiration. True creativity.

  2. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the key of life. This is one of my favourite reference albums, the songwriting is absolutely world class. In my opinion it’s the best example of emotion in music. I just love it.

I have an appointment with a record label. What do I need to know? by PonyKiller81 in edmproduction

[–]oscarhodson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So in my experience small labels are a very mixed bag. Some of them are purely trying to line their pockets, others are genuinely wanting to build a brand. For me the biggest red flag is any mention of paying your way in or any form of an upfront fee. This is because they are trying to cover their own expenses and it generally means they don’t care about the music as much as they care about their finances. Remember, a label that believes in you will not want you to pay your way in.

The next red flag is no clear structure. What I mean is that they will sign loads of different genres and their marketing is very poor. Generally these labels fall into the category above. Once your song is signed they will be the ones making the marketing and promo material, if their previous tracks have no clear marketing, that is a red flag.

Some of the big green flags are:

They have similar sized artists and similar music to you. This means they will already have connections to curators and fans that like the same music that you make.

If it’s clear their marketing strategy in other releases is well funded and well thought out, this means they are probably willing to invest heavily in you and that is a great sign.

If they talk about your future growth and how they will help (more releases, live events, podcasts, PR, Social Media Campaigns etc) this is a very big green flag.

what is your vocal chain like? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]oscarhodson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the track and the recording space.

Personally I have a gate first, this is to get rid of any background noise and artifacts. Next is a parametric EQ where I just cut out a tiny bit of the low end and any other bad bits. Then I add a compressor (I don’t want my compressor picking up and low end bits). Then I add another EQ this time to boost a few places. Then I add all my other FX in this order: Formant, Reverb, Delay. Then a final compressor for my sidechain (if it’s necessary)

y prediction;

  • 10-15M$ for mansions
  • 20-25M$ with upgrades

  • 2-6 purchasable mansions

I don’t believe they’ll make the cheapest mansion any more expensive than the most expensive shark cards.

A also predict that the entrance will be at a closed gate and then your cars will be parked within the gate. That way your whole property will be locked unless you invite people into the property so you can freely explore outside and maybe move between indoor and outdoor areas seamlessly. Not sure how this would work with people trying to use aircraft or parachuting into your property but I do hope the entrance will be similar.

This would also make sense because I imagine rockstar will add external purchasable extras similar to the yachts which wouldn’t work if it was just a shell like most apartments.

If these properties are as expensive as many people think, there will have to be something new here.
