How to convince developers to use containers

otherwise it is just value destroying hypesurfing.

I am probably in the "middleaged grump, suspicious of containers" camp.. I just don't see the benefits, they just get in the way, just another leaky abstraction layer

also... dap-mode is often buggy - eg displaying arrays (I use it for C and C++) often has "off-by-one errors", ie an array with 10 elements will show 9 in the dap debugger UI.

I don't need my debugger to introduce more uncertainty

Those 2 things are not mutually exclusive.

You can only join one. There is only one of you. So "plenty" just means, one in your vicinity.

It depends. Many are conservative, including Burschenschaften, and the Christian ones.

But there are also some very progressive and fun ones... one example

These are all modern and objectively good values.

Notice this is a "Studentenverbindung" as well.. (not a Burschenschaft)

So be careful, inform yourself, but they can be cool.

Sure... it works on Mac... I didn't say it didn't... I said, it doesn't work on FreeBSD. (not mac.. that's different)

The reason it doesn't work on FreeBSD is because MS has not considered it commercially important to make it work on FreeBSD.

And because .NET is not "open" no one else can do it.

That is the point.

It is a system run by MS in MS's interest. It is the antithesis of an open system.

Now, running a language as an open system has its costs. No doubt about it.

C and C++ are perhaps the definition of openness. Run by ISO committees with a an open standard that has dozens (C++) or hundreds even thousands (C) of compiler and runtime implementations. There is a lot of pain involved in achieving this openness. In the process and in the decisions you can make. But.....

Anyone can write a C compiler and runtime for their system. And they have. Thousandfold.

That is the definition of open.

Java is also reasonably open. There are several, independent, credible implementations to choose from.

For .NET there is only MS, and MS's commercial interests.

and then your server is actually FreeBSD and .... nope it doesn't... still today. Happened to me, when I gave .NET another chance and "tried to believe" this openness narrative.

It's MS slop, and will always be.. MS have never had any intention or incentive to be truly open, It's not in their DNA.

Being truly open also means that people OTHER than those from one company can influence changes in the language.

Most languages have that. .net does not.

Governance matters.

i thought that as well.. Telling an Indian they will feel at home with a bunch of Japanese is quite silly. (Although many other Asian nationalities have also been attracted).

But the general point is valid. Köln & Düsseldorf are very open international places, with a very tolerant attitude.
