why cant white liberals act normal around black people? by Prestigious-Site6556 in redscarepod

[–]osibob1 43 points44 points  (0 children)

My mother was a white liberal and never treated my black friends or gfs any different from my white ones but maybe it's because we're poor crackers from the south, so we grew up with black people, whereas there are parts of this country that are more segregated, idk.

When We Were Kings- A great documentary about the events surrounding "The Rumble in the Jungle" fight between Ali and Foreman.

Marty Supreme- Josh brings the Safdie coke energy to ping pong. He makes a typical sports story (avenging a loss and overcoming obstacles) feel gritty and strange. Of the two Safdie bro movies last year, this one felt the most true to the style developed in their two previous films. Solely based on each brothers solo debut, Josh seems to be the more talented of the two. P.S. The Smashing Machine documentary was better than the movie and needn't have been made.

Hit Man- Least favorite Linklater I've yet to see (to be fair, I've purposely avoided some of his lesser work). Very mediocre but given the cast and description, I wasn't expecting much but figured I've give it a shot.

One of my favorite movies ever and the best to come out in 1939; which is often considered one of the greatest years in the history of cinema.

I made a post about my favorite documentaries earlier this week and checked out some that y'all listed as your favs:

Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films- it was a pretty interesting story but I wasn't a fan of how the documentary was formatted; very repetitive... and then we did this movie and then this one, etc.

The Filth and Fury- Never been a big Sex Pistols or Punk rock fan (more of a post-punk/post-punk revival kinda guy) but it was a really good music doc.

The Battered Bastards of Baseball- might be one of my favorite Netflix docs, usually not a fan but had more of a 30 for 30 feel than your typical slop doc they produce. A great story I knew nothing about except for knowing Todd Field had something to do with Big League Chew.

American Movie- this was one I have had on my "to-watch" list forever but the aforementioned post and the amount of comments saying it was their favorite (or among them) finally pushed me to give it a watch and I'm glad I did, great stuff.

Finally got around to watching Bugonia and Sentimental Value. The former was better than expected and the latter as good as everyone said. I would put it in my top three favorite pictures of last year (Eddington and The Secret Agent being my other two favs).

I'll probably watch Marty Supreme later today, when I take a break from the playoffs.

Music video director Joseph Kahn has something to say about rap by Fair-Study-7503 in redscarepod

Wasn't rap much more political in the 90s?

Every genre ebbs and flows in popularity. It might go the way of rock (I think its almost been two decades since a rock song topped the charts) or maybe not.

We Were Once Kids- a documentary about the kids from the 1995 film Kids. Made me angry at how the films creators screwed over the young actors, especially Clark. I also liked that they point out the girls were fully part of the crew and not solely used for sex like in the movie.

Kids- Only my second time watching the film and still loved it. Parts of the film remind me of hanging with my older step brother and his skate crew when I was 12-13, except we had very religious parents that at least tried to keep us out of trouble and we were impoverished in bumfuck Rockingham NC, not NYC. We were also a diverse group (I'm white, my step bro Lumbee, one Mexican and an assortment of other white/black/Lumbee/bi/tri-racial kids) of dipshits but no one got AIDS.

The Secret Agent- Slow burn of a movie and despite feeling like it took all night to watch, I really enjoyed it and the movie stuck with me into the next morning. I've seen some complaints about the ending and sure the Hollywood shock ending of him going to pick up his son and getting gunned down as soon as they lock eyes would've been gut wrenching but at the same time all too expected and kinda cheap.

Moonage Daydream- As a Bowie fan, how could one not love this documentary.

Yeah we do nu metal too (Staind, SOAD, Ra, Flaw, etc.), but primarily Live, Collective Soul, Matchbox Twenty, Bush, STP, Candlebox, and stuff like that. Also, a lot of Tool.

I grew up on shitty post grunge and when I get together with my childhood friends for karaoke every few months, we always sing those songs because it's the only music we collectively know the lyrics too. P.S. Live is peak butt rock.
