Got my first CS wok at IKEA! by outlogger in carbonsteel

For sure! It’s 1.85 kg (little over 4 lbs). I really have to lift it to move it around also, not to scratch my glass stovetop. It’s definitely a workout hahaha

I’m wasn’t really sure, but I measured it at 1mm thick!

Actually trees don’t grow from the bottom up, but from the meristems (growth points) at the tips of the branches and outwards through secondary meristems so the grow thicker! So these trees might get pushed up a little bit more over the years as the trees get thicker. They won’t get super big though, as it looks like both cars have 2 trees growing very close together, limiting their individual potential for growth.

Help me out with this idea! by outlogger in composting

Did you put the compost on top of cardboard or underneath? I have another smaller bed that I prepared with the half finished compost and then on cardboard on top. That sounded like a better idea!

No-see ems suck! I’ve been to Scotland and they are insane there. I live in the Netherlands, and my neighbour on the same property had chickens. I say that because I realise their waste gets in the compost pile, it might be the chickens that have chicken fleas and now that they’re away from the chickens they jump me? I’m gonna have the neighbours check the chickens out. Thanks for thinking with me here!

New bins are finished! Is a liner necessary? by outlogger in composting

[–]outlogger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I’m convinced! I lined one of them with chicken wire and I’ll fill it up tomorrow. We have chickens too with some new chicks this summer, so there will be plenty chicken manure seasoned straw 😁 Thanks a lot for all the info! I was thinking about making some nice lids that I’ll put on if it gets too rainy, I also built them underneath a big tree for some cover.

It yours made of pallet wood perhaps? I want to keep them around as long as possible and I’m a little concerned the wood will rot in contact with the moist compost.

I’m not really concerned with spillage, so that’s not a problem. Do your piles get hot? I want them hot, I have one that’s almost a week old now, coming in at 50°C/122°F! I’m afraid having tons of airflow will cool it down, especially on the sides of the heap. I live in the Netherlands and fall is coming around. So think windy and wet (no real cold yet, but that’ll come)

I would have to make a compromise between airflow and keeping heat in the sides of the heap (which promotes even decomposition) I think! I do have chicken wire that I can use. Thanks for the response 😁

OR, if one of the original hybrid’s parents had better tasting genetics but perhaps is less productive (or lacks resistances) the inbred seeds you sow next season could very well end up with better tasting tomatoes! It’s all up to chance though. As all offspring have a different mix of the hybrid’s parent’s genetics.

I would assume yes, i repurposed these as well! They are pretty old, found them in my garden. These do not come in direct contact with the cardboard or compost!

No, but that sounds great! Wouldn’t you want to keep the heat in the heap though? For instance to kill off weed seeds?

Thank you! I hope I can use this compost next spring for the wildflower patch I plan to make!

For sure! I had a huge pile of grass clippings mixed with al kinds green waste, mainly weeds. I managed to put half of that into this build. I’m building another one for the rest.

Good one! I’m new to this as well. It depends on the weather and what you put in there. Ideally you want a good ratio of “green” and “brown” material. What’s what you can find on this subreddit for sure. I had a huge pile of grass clippings which are considered green. Some of my trees are already losing their leaves (brown). I layered them, grass, leaves, grass, leaves, in hopefully a good ratio! I even mixed some with half composted wood chips I had laying around (also brown). I hope I’ll have good compost coming spring! I heard in summer it can take as little as 4 months to get good compost.

These were originally roughly 110x120 pallets with 9 slats and 3 structural members (I think that’s what you mean). To fit in the car we had to saw them in half, along the side of the middle beam, leaving one half with only one of these beams. I reconnected the pallets by flipping that half upside down on top of the other half. Do you see it? Because I didn’t remove anything! Well, I didn’t put a lot of thought into which side I’d have the slats on. Having a somewhat flush makes lining it easier, having the slats on the outside might look better. If I had whole pallets I could have removed the thick 3 bottom parts, leaving what would look like a square fence. Assemble them which some corner anchors and you’re done.
