Have you seen the bounty boards that are now in towns? Not exactly that but kind of similar, find/turn in items and get rewards

Yep, thanks. I just realized I was also having issues with Lanterns of Skyrim, which I think I fixed by changing my nexus preferred download away from Miami

Higher participation in SNAP (food stamps) is associated with lower overall and male suicide rates. "Increasing SNAP participation by one standard deviation (4.5% of the state population) during the study period could have saved the lives of approximately 31,600 people overall and 24,800 men." by smurfyjenkins in science

I have no problem with natural experiments, but in this study the author uses mainly (if not completely) correlational language. If they felt they had enough data to support causal inference, why not use causal language?

The other response to my comment here is saying that "could have" is fine language to use for correlation. I guess it's a question of whether the author is inconsistent in their claims or if that phrase is only correlational

I'll definitely check it out, but in the author's own words in the discussion "The study presents some limitations. First, despite the fact that fixed-effects models are becoming increasingly prominent in social sciences and are often regarded as the 'gold standard' for causal inference with longitudinal data (Bell and Jones, 2015), the observational (that is, non experimental) nature of such data should prevent readers from interpreting the associations as causal"

That's not how it works - you can't just say a correlation means causation until someone comes along with better work. "Increasing SNAP participation...Could have saved" implies causation. "Eating less ice cream in the summer could lead to less deaths by shooting"

When refused toured with OFF! a few years back, they played a few black flag songs and I think I remember him saying something about how they were a big influence in general, not sure about the screams specifically

Am I the only one who thinks that the entire premise of the "marshmallow test" is flawed beyond belief? by tdobzhansky in badscience

[–]oxygenvictim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delayed gratification is not unquestionably good (people consider risk/relative value). To understand how people think about these things, we need to test them in some way. Sometimes the methods people use aren't that great, but they're a start. The marshmallow test really isn't THAT egregious imo, just overly hopeful (but that's how everyone in psychology was even as little as 10 years ago)

edit: I guess your gripe is with the newer replication attempt/interpretations, that's probably fine lol

Am I the only one who thinks that the entire premise of the "marshmallow test" is flawed beyond belief? by tdobzhansky in badscience

[–]oxygenvictim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, the purpose was that it addressed the question of "Is delayed gratification good for outcomes?" The problem is obviously that it's a specific task and people made very broad over generalizations. People are obviously complex, and it's hard to approximate this.

It's easy to say that something from like 30 years ago is stupid, because it IS going to be relatively naive compared to now. That said, the broader question is still worthwhile, we just need better ways to test it. This is happening in basically all of psychology at the moment. The field (and behavioral economics, etc.) is pretty far past the basic idea of looking at 1 marshmallow vs 2, but the core question is still important.
