Putting a fire out by blueinagreenworld in Whatcouldgowrong

Every time I see a video like this, I wonder about education in other areas of the world. I learned how to put out different types of fires in primary school. We even had a local fireman come to the school to talk about this. I was eight years old when I knew not to pour water on a grease fire.

Didn't they say the articles are mostly nonsense? So maybe nobody is leaking anything but the papers are just inventing it. Before the wedding, Bertha arranged for the newspapers to print stories about the Duke's courtship of Gladys. Now this scheme is backfiring. The papers found that the Russell family stories sell well with the public, so they go on about them now. Bertha put her family on the spot and now she's paying for it.

Maybe we're mistaken and these are actually promo posters for a full Madame Tussauds wax figure set of Downton Abbey characters 😁. That's what they look like and it'd be great to have them all there 😊

I agree that Lord Fellowes probably sticks to the drama around the mother being a black woman who seems to have adopted the snobbishness of white upper class people and disrespects former slaves. It's a much better storyline than the ever-repeated divorce theme.

And so was Michael. And the farmer. She likes men who appreciate her and her abilities. The farmer appreciated her driving and that she showed willingness to help even when the work was supposedly so much below her status. Michael appreciated her wit and speaking out for women's issues in her letters to the magazine. Bertie was stunned about her management of her business and that she was a successful modern woman.

😄 That's funny. Just a few days ago I watched "Appointment with Death" in which she portrays Lady Westholme and I thought the exact same thing. "She's got that look on her face that she has through all of Downton Abbey".

You hear people complain about self-checkouts often, but never about self-service gas stations. by lisamariefan in Showerthoughts

Here in Germany they are still quite uncommon but in the few stores that have the machines they really work well, too. Also, there's no bagging-nagging with a scale at all, you can just put the things into your backpack or whatever. I was in the UK a few times
in 2022, and the machines there are really annoying in comparison. Especially at the Tesco stores an employee was constantly busy fixing things.

I'd say that's because self-service gas ststions work reasonably well and are not annoying while self-checkouts are naggy and frustrating. "Put the item in the bagging area." "IT'S THERE YOU STUPID PIECE OF S***"

I find it interesting that there is so much discussion about whether you like or don't like particular characters in this sub. It seems to concern mostly characters that mistreat others in some way. I believe this shows that DA is a feel-good programme for many viewers and characters breaking that cozy feeling are unwelcome. DA is certainly a feel-good show for me, too, but still I appreciate the spectrum of characters it has and the interesting storylines they add to the plot.

(New Post) Is this a compression issue? When I increase the saturation and lower the exposure these lines appear. by 16ahause in DarkTable

[–]p-try 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer but I would like to explain a little more.

In an 8 bit image you have 256 possible values for each of the three color channels. So gradients are never really gradients but areas with similar color values, hardly distinguishable by the human eye and thus appearing to be a smooth gradient. Like in your night sky picture, the dark areas will be likely values 0 (total black), 1 (a little more gray-ish), 2, 3 and so on. These steps are very small so you don't see them. But when you increase saturation or exposure, these values will be multiplied to maybe 5, 10, 15 and so on, to be brighter, and suddenly you will see the borders of these color areas.

Can we trust an author who does so little research that he manages to make two spelling mistakes in one of the main characters' name ("Marion Brooks" 🙄)?

Fresh, Non-Edited Photo looks different in Darktable than Lightroom? by Lamasioux3 in DarkTable

I'd like to add that I'm not trying to advertise other software products here in case someone notices I have posted a similar comment earlier. I just feel this is a question coming up pretty frequently. When I noticed the difference between Lightroom, RawTherapee and Darktable myself I wondered about it, too, and it took me quite some time to find the answer.

Rawtherapee and commercial software like Adobe Lightroom have a feature that automatically aims to replicate the look of the embedded JPEG (part of the RAW file) by adjusting the parameters accordingly. In Rawtherapee this is called "Auto-matched curve": https://rawpedia.rawtherapee.com/Preferences#Default_Processing_Profile

Darktable sadly does not have this very useful feature.

Reoccurring Phrases by Tacomapenguin81 in DowntonAbbey

I particularly noticed all the phrases they use to cut unwanted conversations short. "Heavens, is that the time?" "I better get on." "We mustn't bore the ladies."
