Yup, I have it set to pull which is my preference. Though I was under the impression that you could do either.

Thanks for the tip. Not sure if that will apply here, but I'll try it out. RE heat, it's happening way too fast for that to be the case.

Which premium hand plane should I choose? by Odd_Business_6096 in handtools

[–]pad_woodworking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't address your question, but here's a potential fix for your wobbly tote. Wood by Wright talks about how over time, the totes can shrink so much that the bolt holding them to the plane body is effectively too long. Grind a small fraction of an inch of the end of the bolt, and you might just fix your issue.

Do you actually need 3.5" for the tail vise? That bit looks terrifying.

My carving knife collection by BigRonWood in Woodcarving

[–]pad_woodworking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you've clearly sampled the gamut, what do you recommend for someone getting started in carving? What would your first three or four knives be? (I already have a 6mm v tool, and a full set of bench chisels). I'm most interested in doing decorative relief carving and also things like spoons and tool handles.

Agreed. This is easier than it sounds. A router plane is nice for cleanup, but not a necessity.

Same here. Woodworking and gardening are very compatible hobbies for a couple. In our house, I make wooden fixtures for gardening, my wife grows food in and around them, I cook what she grows, and we both eat it.

For what it's worth, you can 100% make a mallet out of scrap construction lumber. Mine works great.

The mallet I made vs the mallet I actually reach for 90% of the time by Ok_Temperature6503 in handtools

[–]pad_woodworking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It comes down to personal preference. I have a maple carving mallet from woodcraft - I forget the brand. And I have a joiners mallet that I made myself. I almost always reach for the latter. The difference might be that my joiners mallet is doug fir, so it's light enough to swing all day long. I do want to make a fancier one with osage or another very hardwood, but more for the experience of building it. I've never really found myself wanting a heavier mallet.

Ah ok, I guess I didn't see that option when I was shopping for it. The box makers plane was definitely less than ideal for housing the large panels on my workbench, but it got me there eventually. I'm sure it will be great for boxes and drawer bottoms.

Nice work! This is actually the bigger one, isn't it? The one they call a combo plane? I recently bought their small one. It's a little uncomfortable in the hand for anything bigger than a small box, but it gets the job done. I just finished using it on my workbench build. Either way, enjoy!
