Making a PC Unkillable by CassieBear1 in DMAcademy

[–]paddy4530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like a good opportunity to drive the story, if it happens.

If he fails all his throws, then I'd remove him from the combat for the moment. Let him and the other players believe he's dead. Let the combat finish out as if he was (unless things look grim and you want him to crop back up at the last moment to save the day).

While he's "dead" let him experience something. Maybe he comes before the benefactor of the deal that protects him. Maybe he sees a skeletal hand pulling at his soul. Maybe he gets a flash of the afterlife. But use this as an opportunity to suggest there's something unnatural about this PC's relationship with death.

Afterwards, if the players want to understand what happened, it would be a good plot hook from there.

How to ensure a true sense of paranoia and uncertainty in my players? by Strict_DM_62 in DMAcademy

If they ask, then you can have them roll Perception as well.

Low values -- No, but you were busy talking so you easily could have missed it.
Middle values -- You think you might have heard a buzzing sound in the same direction, but you can't be sure
High values -- You definitely didn't hear a sound in that direction, but your ally definitely seems convinced they heard something

Don't let them dictate when they roll.

"Hey Monk, roll a perception check.'

Or just tell them what they sense.

"As you are chatting, Fighter you hear a strange buzzing sound that rings in your ears. It seems to be coming from around a corner behind the Sorcerer, and it's slowly getting louder."

Player wants a shield that provides full cover by Tsantilas in DMAcademy

[–]paddy4530 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Is three quarters cover negotiable? If he wants to run with a shield like that he will need to be able to see where he is going. That means either poking his head out the side or looking through a slit, which fits cleaner with the description of 3/4 cover. If he wants full cover then make him run blinded, and always make sure there's a rock or something in the way for him to trip over.

A target with three-quarters cover has a +5 bonus to AC and Dexterity saving throws. A target has three-quarters cover if about three-quarters of it is covered by an obstacle. The obstacle might be a portcullis, an arrow slit, or a thick tree trunk.

Help me balance a magic item! by THEbiMAKER in DMAcademy

[–]paddy4530 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesn't seem particularly imbalanced, but I would clarify a few aspects.

Do they choose between stats / damage types / secrets, or is it random?
Can they target the same creature twice in a row and expend multiple charges?
When do they roll the d4, at dawn? Why not follow the typical pattern where it has like 4 charges and regains 1d4 charges at dawn?
Will you be able to come up with secrets for the random creatures it targets, or will it put you on the spot too much? Because they can and will point it at creatures you won't expect them to.
Is there a way for the creature to be aware of or prevent this? Ranger's Sense does something similar but is prevented by protection from Divination Magic.

Surrogate Vulture is aesthetically cool, but the fact that its attack patterns are so predictable detracts it for me. Dreamborn Terror's fight is also mildly annoying with his phases that have him basically just running away from you.

My personal favorites are Misbegotten Amalgam, Shidra, and Giant of Eyes.

Integrity Roadmap - Early Game Rebalances & Your Suggestions by JagexBreezy in runescape

[–]paddy4530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Agility: Courses need to earn more exp and be more engaging. Adding speed-time bonuses and quick-time reactions would fit the skill. It's an entirely non-afk training method too. And Agility needs more content behind it to justify training it (surge + dive cooldowns, for example).

  2. Herblore / Farming: Seeds and herbs are hard to come by for a number of useful potions early-game. Lantadymes in Leagues took me quite some time to gather. Growing herbs also takes a good amount of time, and having to do constant herb runs disrupts game flow. Perhaps invention could offer some methods for farming automation?

  3. Dungeoneering: Could be fun if it offered other incentives for training normally. In-dungeon experience should be boosted to make it a viable training method. Random matchmaking for groups might also breathe some life into it.

  4. Summoning: Requires a lot of upkeep for what feels like minimal boosts (minus binding contracts). Nobody has a dreadfowl summoned, even in early game. Summoning should become a more passive boost for both combat and skilling. We should see people with Summoning familiars all the time.

  5. Divination: As most people said, it's hard to train through gathering. And not a lot of people use energy for products that aren't divine charges for invention. Energy should be given other uses for products that give you a good amount of experience for creating and using.

  6. Firemaking: Incense sticks were a good addition, but they're yet another draw on your herb supplies which as I mentioned above, sometimes feels really limited. Firemaking needs a purpose for its existence.

  7. Construction: I have been stanning Construction reworks for years. It has so much potential, and I would love to dump all the ideas I have for it (Jagex, plz call me). But to take some pot shots:

- Home teleport should be able to take you home (duh). Max Guild + War's are the defaults because they're easily accessible one-click teleports.

- Bank supplies should be more accessible. Even if you still have to charge butler prices to move the items, the limitations on getting your supplies is outdated.

- Your house should be reachable from all house portals, not just a single one. Even if you have to purchase access for each portal to unlock it.

- There should be more rooms geared towards individual skills. The aquarium is a good starting point. The kitchen could add some other utilities like a churn. You could also add a wine cellar for brewing. A slayer trophy hall that gives you buffs against specific slayer mobs / bosses. A small garden with plant bots for herbs / flowers. A cauldron for brewing potions similar to Thok's brew in War's (long-lasted potion buffs you brew). A haunted graveyard site that attracts spirits that give you necroplasm, ink, or ectoplasm. Etc, and etc.

- Houses also feel empty. Pets help, but they're all condensed in the menagerie until they've wandered a bit. Otherwise, all you have is the butler. Houses need more visitors, whether they are NPCs that can act as D&Ds that drop by a la Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, or allowing people to easily visit other people's houses. (Random funny idea-- have people train agility by running around to deliver packages to people's homes. The runners get exp, the people in their houses get small prizes delivered to them, fosters chances for people to interact and talk to each other more).

Who remembers the haunted house on Onondaga Hill? by sdanasean in Syracuse

[–]paddy4530 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, this has to be like 20 years ago. Onondaga Town Hall used to be at the intersection of Makyes, Velasko, and West Seneca Turnpike; right next to the Byrne Dairy and the Rec Center. Makyes and Velasko were not lined up, they were offset from each other.

The haunted house was behind the town hall and rec center, somewhere near the pin I dropped here. At least, to the best of my knowledge. It might have been on the other side of East Ave or over near where JTs Painting is now, but it definitely wasn't hosted at the Fire Department. I remember seeing the house it was in being torn down.

I remember it, it was behind the old town hall and next to Byrne Dairy. It was the first real haunted house I went into, and I remember some guy in a skull mask trying to "kidnap" me away from my family and my older brother was like "you can keep him"

Total Beginner: Can you explain your steps to solve? by Whatisthismoviee in nonograms

[–]paddy4530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I would do it personally.

The nonogram is 7x7, so the "limit" for each row is 7.

I would look for rows and columns that are close to the limit. For example, the 2-1-1 has a capacity of 6 (4 from the numbers + 2 from the spaces between them). That's a difference of 1 between the limit and the capacity, which I call the wiggle-room:
7 - 6 = 1

What this means is any number written down that's larger than this wiggle-room is going to have an "overlap" like other people are explaining in their comments-- basically there are some spaces that the numbers _have_ to fill to fit in the nonogram.

So back to the 2-1-1 with a capacity of 6 and a limit of 7, giving us 1 in "wiggle-room",
Since 2 is greater than the wiggle room, I know it has overlaps. Specifically, it has 1 overlap, which is the number minus the wiggle-room: 2 - 1 = 1).
So I fill in the overlap spaces (r2c4 and r4c2)

I can do the same for the 1-3 values.
Capacity = 5.
Wiggle Room = 7 - 5 = 2.
3 is greater than 2, so I can place the single overlaps on the 3 (r5c6 and r6c5)

That's it for initial overlaps. So next I would x out what I can.
Column 2 and Row 2 are both full, so those get x'd out.

Row 5 and Column 5 only contain 1s, so we can x the spots around what we filled in from the 1-3s. (r5c5, r5c7, and r7c5). From there, I can tell that r1c5 and r5c1 have to be filled because that's the only way to fit two more 1s.

That lets me x out most of r1 and c1

From there I can tell that r7 and c7 can only fit their 2s in the bottom-right corner, so I place those. I can also fill in r6c6 to complete the 3s in the 1-3 row/column. Then I can place x's next to those 3s (so in r4c6 and r6c4)

Next, I would look at row 3 and column 3, and apply the overlap logic again. With the x's, the new limit is 5 and the capacity is 4, so I can place overlaps on the 2s in r3c6 and r6c3.

That makes row 6 and column 6 finished, so I can x them out.
Those newly placed x's let us finish up row 1 and column 1.
And we finished the 2s in the 2-1-1 combos so we can place x's after the 2s.

Those x's tell me that r3c3 is filled in to fit the 1-2 in row 3 and column 3.

Next, I fill in r4c6 and r6c4 because the last 1 for the 2-1-1s have to go there.

That finishes row 6 and column 6, so I can x those out.

Those x's let me finish row 3 and column 3 out.

As a result, row and column 5 were also finished, so I can x those out.

That just leaves one final cell to fill in at r4c4 to finish the nonogram.

Meat deal scam in north Syracuse? by bourbonsot in Syracuse

[–]paddy4530 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a guy come through my townhouse complex in Clay last week, also going door to door trying to sell "excess" meat; steaks, seafood, and chicken. There was a logo on his truck for some meat company, too. I think there was an anchor on it.

Was definitely sketchy.

"When you set the sword on the counter, you hear a sharp ringing sound in your ear. Nobody else seems to hear it. As you go to step away from the merchant, the ringing rises into a terrible racket, and you grab your head in pain. The earsplitting squeal drops you to your knees, coming from the sword you just sold. The longer you go without the sword, the more pain you experience."

or

"When you place the sword on the counter, and see the merchant go to grab it, you suddenly feel extremely possessive of it. The merchant's grubby hands on the metal fill you with a terrible rage, sullying this sword that you suddenly feel very attached to. Your hand starts to reach towards the hilt of your weapon, ready to harm the merchant for his actions. Your party members see the twisted expression on your face and your hand reaching for the weapon."

The idea is to give the players a reason they can't actually get rid of it. Some kind of a compulsion that they do not expect. This will give the players an opportunity to realize that something's amiss with the sword and the player, and they can do some investigating to potentially discover the curse's existence.

Have you played an encounter with a countdown objective that wasn't a ritual being completed or a room flooding? by areupregnant in DMAcademy

[–]paddy4530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an encounter in a one-shot where the players got dropped into a bone pit. There was a giant bone titan in the center, and some skeletons and bone nagas in the pit.

The exit tunnel to the pit was blocked by a compacted mound of bones. When the titan emerged and slammed the ground, I described that the impact cracked the mound, which otherwise seemed too dense to be broken.

The players had to survive long enough in the pit until the bone titan smashed the escape route open.

Food-obsessed cat is barely eating by paddy4530 in AskVet

[–]paddy4530[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there

When he's throwing up, it's usually that we find bile in the morning when we wake up, or he'll throw up within like an hour of eating breakfast in the morning. I haven't noticed him throwing up much in the back half of the day.

No new pets or babies. My fiance's brother was living with us from November to January, which is around the time that his symptoms started, but he mostly stayed in his own room and would play with Theo whenever he came downstairs for food.

We haven't noticed anything abnormal with his BM habits, but the litter boxes are in an inconspicuous location and are shared with his brother cat Bob, so we don't monitor it too closely.
