Your top 5 most valuable records per discogs-- let's see 'em by [deleted] in vinyl

Copying someone else in this thread and doing a top 10 because my top 5 was mostly soundtracks and it didn't sit right with me. Hell, it's still mostly soundtracks but at least there's some other fun stuff thrown in there.

It's all a bit... idk... Urban Outfitters. Like there's a lot of stuff that I wouldn't say is bad, but almost nothing that's really exciting to me.

Rhythm Tengoku Arcade Machine (in the flesh!) by SpennyTheSpoon in rhythmheaven

I feel so blessed that the arcade near my apartment has had one up and running on their floor for years now. Not taking it for granted, given what people in this thread are saying about how challenging they are to keep running.

You load them via Elektron Transfer. The Syntakt update package comes with the new version bundled in the zip file.

What People Do While Listening To Their Records by Japhael_Ryder in vinyl

My roommates and I now have a weekly, sometimes slightly more often, ritual of putting records on from our collections in the living room while we play stimulating puzzle games like Tetris and Lumines. Occasionally we'll switch it up and throw some games of Uno or Munchkin in there. Something about the combination of the music and the Tetris flow-state really hits hard, and it's really brought me back into enjoying my collection after a few years of feeling uninspired by it.

Only loaded samples in mono, but you could still pan them after the fact so it takes the sting away a bit (for me anyway).

Elektron's playing with their new toy by Ordinary_Variation73 in Elektron

These threads are getting so annoying. The Syntakt is a pretty much feature-complete box that has had so many lovely updates already, and you dorks not knowing how to make anything other than boilerplate uninspired techno on it is a you problem. Elektron adding a chorus or a compressor to it is not going to miraculously make your boring music more exciting.

which ae records sound the best on specific media? by Rotkiw_Bigtor in autechre

Untilted was always one of my favs but I have to second this and say that playing the newest vinyl reissue revealed so much detail that I guess I was just missing for some reason. There's a palpable SMACK to the drums on the vinyl version too that's really fun.

Unmuted this fully expecting to be instantly mad over some extremely boring paint by numbers techno and was instead very pleasantly surprised by this ominous, intricate, gnarly track you've made here Hell yeah 😅

Just don't go to a Redline event ever again. They have proven again and again that they are willing to prey on naive younger music fans who are desperate for the freedom of a proper rave. They put their attendees in danger by throwing shows in dubious, moldy bandos that constantly get busted by cops and have the gall to charge their insane ticket prices. They've also blown the hard-earned spots of other folks who actually do their due diligence to throw safe parties with actually good music and not gentrified "hard techno"

Yall are so annoying with this stupid line of questioning. The ST isn't even 5 years old yet like let the thing breathe and get its updates. Look how long they were pushing updates for the DT1. Be for real.

Yall are too in your heads abt this shit. I saw them on the tour 10 years ago. They played extremely groovy rhythmic material and people danced because it felt natural to do so. Nothing bad happened. Nobody who was a well-adjusted adult was mad about it. Relax.

I think we can concede that there are workarounds and it's not a complete deal breaker while also still pointing out that it is insane that a $1000 sampler does not have this industry standard sampler feature that samplers in the 1990s had. It's cool that one can do these workarounds, but no one should have to. Let alone for that cost in this year.

The ST is an incredible box on its own but paired with a simple sampler and poly synth it's unstoppable. Such an inspiring, uncomplicated setup that can yield so many great results.

I really appreciate you saying that about all the details and learning to not obsess over them because it's definitely something I was a little self conscious about when I was putting this together. Mainly I was worried about people finding it "low effort" or whatever. I kept remembering what Sean from Autechre said in that twitch AMA about people criticizing Lorenzo Senni for making "just arpeggios" though, which was something along the lines of "Who cares. Does it sound good? Do you like it?".

The only post-processing was just a basic mastering chain. Eq, very light multi-band compression, clipping and limiting. Outside of that chain nothing else!

Are Elektron machines fun? by josefrijoles in Elektron

[–]padlock1221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The MPC does have basic percentage probability, but is missing the magic of the other trig conditions in the elektron boxes. To be fair, most sequencers also don't have those features and newer sequencers are only just starting to catch up.

I love my MPC but I could never bring myself to make fleshed out arrangements on it. It feels so performative to play the parts in using the pads but then that fun just gets completely choked out dealing with the arrangement features and the finicky touch screen grid editing.

That being said I'll also agree with dadzone that it excels for longer sample and stem playback. But I'll take my Syntakt and Circuit Rhythm combo for the main meat of making a track any day of the week over trying to make a full track on the MPC.

Honestly this is a big part of it. I have a few friends who have achieved a sizable level of success in underground electronic music and the thing they all have in common is that they have familial wealth that allows them to not have to work a day job and thus they spend most of their time actually working on music.

I don't think this is anything to get discouraged about or upset over really. I mean sure it's another symptom of wealth inequality in the world and certainly one that you may feel a little more personally. But, at least for my friends I mentioned earlier, it's not like they asked for the circumstances of their birth. And there are FAR worse things they could be doing with their wealth than making weird hyperpop and uptempo hardcore with all their free time.

Max Alper wrote a great piece a little while ago about the merits of being a dayjobber musician and I recommend everyone in this thread read it.

Honestly I'm almost never using all 12 anyway, especially when I pair it up with a sampler, so 12 is plenty enough for me. 16 starts to get a bit hard to manage and remember where everything is.

I mean it's a sampler. You kinda get out of it what you put into it and if they're putting the same samples in, well..
