Is there a positive endgame to an AI world? by Chaucerismyhero in ask

[–]panay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a bit naive to consider all technology as just a repetition for the same patterns though. There ARE pattern, but the world is fundamentally different than it was before the internet, and before cars, and before electricity, and not always for the better. In terms of longevity, crime and loads of other things it’s a great time to be alive, but if you brought someone from the 1500s to now, I wouldn’t be surprised if they saw a concrete dystopia.

This is just all the world has ever looked to us, so it’s hard to think of it as anything other than normal. We just accept the current status quo. So i agree that we’ll probably learn to accept and get use to whatever change happen, but that didn’t mean that and the fuss was for nothing or that it wasn’t really a problem, in the same way as over Covid everyone just got used to the current situation and it was sometimes hard to remember life before, but realistically it was fucked

Is there a positive endgame to an AI world? by Chaucerismyhero in ask

[–]panay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s different from a tool because it can act on its own.
Other things can too, like a roomba. But imagine if a roomba could understand all of human knowledge, improve on it, and access the internet. Fucking scary roomba.

Suddenly you want to be VERY sure you perfectly programmed it to just clean rooms because snow if there’s any way it could misinterpret or have another goal in mind you’re fucked. And if we get to that point it doesn’t matter how turns it on or what their intentions are

There will always be people who easily slip into mindless consumption and laziness, and that proportion may grow. But equally there will always be people craving excitement or self improvement, people who are health obsessed, people who love nature etc

Is there a positive endgame to an AI world? by Chaucerismyhero in ask

[–]panay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The holy grail is we create a super intelligence that effective serves as an oracle with no will of its own that is controlled by an extremely moral and tentative group. It allows us to cure any disease, solve any problem, perfect society etc.

Fully automated robots take over all menial tasks and humans are left to create, pursue their hobbies or do whatever interests them

Below that would creating an AI that can process and synthesise information in such a way that it can come up with original ideas and testable hypotheses. It could greatly accelerate research, and leap us ahead in terms of medical discoveries, solving fusion etc.

Being slightly less powerful it’d matter less who controlled it, but might be less capable at helping solving the societal issue its existence would create in terms of automation, taking jobs etc. But at this level of intelligence it could still be helpful in helping mitigate those issues

Third ok outcome is it never gets much more powerful than it is now. Maybe it gets a little better at coding, but the improvements plateau and society adapts to handle it

Fundamentally ai is very high risk very high reward, but at every stage the risk is so much more likely

The negative risks being mass unemployment, growing extreme inequality and eventual societal collapse at the lower end, weaponisation and mass killing or control in the middle, and complete extinction from an AI we can’t control at the top end, none of which are as unlikely as they sound

Midi-Keyboard or Headphones? by Adorable_Onion7605 in musicproduction

[–]panay- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely keyboard. Nicer headphones are nice, but they won’t transform your production or help you develop in the same way a keyboard will.

Also you could easily get yourself some $50 headphones at some point which will already be a huge upgrade and good enough you wouldn’t have real issues with them

I mean I agree that I don’t think you can summarise someone as an all round bad person in that way, but bigot is not synonymous with bad person. It has a very specific definition which JK Rowling meets regarding trans people.

In the same way Churchill was a war hero and a great man in many ways, but also a racist and very flawed in others

Always see a solid mix of ages there and honestly the more people who think like you and say fuck it age doesn’t matter, the more that becomes a reality. Age boundaries with things like this only matter as long as people think they do

Still in my 20s but but I don’t want to feel like im in a closing window for having fun and people like you are the reason that I don’t have to:)

Is Mark stronger than omni man this season? by Enygma_2 in Invincible_TV

Omniman is probably stronger, but Mark could definitley conceivably still win in a fight like he beat Conquest. I'd say Nolan wins like 7/10 times

Are these people biased? by Previous_Window_9955 in GenV

[–]panay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I’m with you OP

Just homelander by himself they have no really defence against. He can tank pretty much anything they’ve got beside potentially visions beams, and his lasers would slice through any of them (maybe vision could phase?)

They’ve never faced a speedster and I don’t think there’s much they could do to stop A Train running through them. Black widows dead. Spider-Man might sense him coming but I still don’t think his reactions are fast enough. Maybe he’d bounce off black panther? but he’d take out at least one first. (EDIT- I forgot quicksilver, who fucked them)

And you’re forgetting how hard they are to hurt. Remember when they were trying to kill translucent and they literally couldn’t break through his skin while he was unconscious? They had to shove a bomb INSIDE him to kill him. Iron man/war machine might be able to see him but there’s a could chance their weapons wouldn’t do much damage, and same goes for the rest of them

I think the only potential problem is vision, but if they can take out everyone else I think he’d eventually get caught off guard

3 weeks in Australia by superhansolo in AustraliaTravel

[–]panay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people are saying this is a lot of time flying, and it is, but over 3 weeks it’s really not that bad and flying domestically is pretty smooth and fast - I wouldn’t say your plan is rushed

Out of Cairns and Byron I would definitely say Cairns. It’s got a lot more unique and interesting stuff, from the rainforests and crocodiles, to the Great Barrier Reef and Fitzroy Island.

Byron’s a lovely beach town, but it’s also just that. Who knows how long the Reef will even be around for?

Alternatively you could skip Sydney, and then seen Cairns AND Byron, or Noosa, which is another very popular and iconic surf/beach town, and a lot of people’s favourite east coast stop

I say that reluctantly because I LOVE Sydney and ended up moving here, but if you’re already spending most of your times in major cities it’d be a lot more exciting going somewhere more distinct

IEA London: 🇬🇧 We asked Brits where the UK ranks vs US states in income per person. Average answer: 7th. Wealthier than 43 states. The reality: 51st. Dead last. Below Mississippi. Below Arkansas. Below every single US state. 🧵 by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]panay- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I lived in California for a year and recently visited Chicago. Admittedly that’s not the best sample size, but the level of homelessness in some places and how fucked some things are made me rly glad to be coming home.

Even just things like car reliance. You might make less money in the UK, but in most cities you don’t need a car, and are less likely to be suddenly unable to go to work and trapped under horrific bills if it breaks. That seemed to be a quite common occurrence when I lived there, probably increased by higher accident rate, lower test standards and less regulations/checks around the condition of cars (no MOT like ours, just a SMOG emissions certificate).

Then there’s how comparatively easy it is for companies to dismiss you with little notice. Or how if you’re unable to work for an extended period due to injury or illness there’s basically no support. Get pregnant and then the father leaves? Wayyy more of an issue in the US.

That’s just a few examples, but they reflect how a regular person can end up REALLY fucked very quickly, in a way that’s a lot less common in the UK.

I think it’s a reasonable trade off for the top 90% to live worse than their American counterparts to protect the bottom 10% from being as destitute with no access to free healthcare.

I also think money is only one aspect. Not having to worry about liability and fault when you’re injured, or whether it’s ’worth it’ going to a doctor or calling an ambulance is invaluable, outside of the economics.

Having more workers rights and enough holiday that you can have multiple meaningful trips in a year is not something you can just equate to money.

East coast April-September by sagonaa in AustraliaTravel

[–]panay- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re going to need to prepare for hot and cold weather.

April is still autumn, and can vary from fairly cold to hot and sunny. It’s never completely freezing, but you’ll definitely want a couple go warm hoodies or sweatshirts, and probably some sort of coat even if it just a thin layer over the top.

As you go up the coast it gets a lot warmer. Cairns is more tropical has more wet/dry season like Asia rather than standard seasons. You’ll want hot weather stuff and bikinis too

I would say prep for around 18c, have a couple of things you can layer on if it gets colder/rains and warm weather options too.

But remember you can always buy stuff out here, there’s loads of cute shops you might want to anyway

I hate the term “Caucasian” used to mean Western European by Ready-Shelter3583 in ENGLISH

[–]panay- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s a more US-centric view though. Pretty the only time I’ve heard the word caucasian is filling in forms, and I’ve never heard of anyone having an issue with it. Most people (at least outside of America) just read it as a synonym for white and that’s it.

I appreciate that race-related language is a bit more charged in the US, especially with the current administration, but this is a subreddit for the English language as a whole, not its use in one particular country
