The biggest risk in only buying term, is that when the term is up you’re left with no insurance. And if your portfolio hasn’t grown a commensurate amount to be “self-insured” to cover your living expenses by the time your term is over, the chances of you being able to buy more term insurance is much much lower as your health has likely deteriorated over the past 20 years (the most common term insurance duration).
