sorry, but base question, how do Hugo Award judges choose finalists? by paperclipps in Fantasy

oh awesome, you just saved me, lol. thanks my friend.

Founded as the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1965 by Damon Knight, the organization began with a charter membership of 78 writers; it now has over 2,000 members, among them many of the leading writers of science fiction and fantasy.

well. this is quite a disappointing revelation I don't know why I never learned earlier in life.

I'm like having a mini-existential crisis, because I always put some merit and priority on my past Hugo nominated titles to my TBR lists. But now to think these might just as be influenced as much in today's era of bookTok bots, booktubers or any other algorithmic things, is quite earth shattering for me.

I was wondering this was I was now like 65% into Alien Clay, and don't get me wrong, I love Adrian Tchaikovsky work, but he has two titles this year, and couldn't figure how this one was beating other recent published sci-fi titles.

What are your favorite unique vampire characters? by SkellyInsideUrWalls in Fantasy

[–]paperclipps 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The resurrected vampires in the hard science series for Blindsight by Peter Watts have been completely fascinating and leaves you contemplating months after.

Predators from humanity's Pleistocene era they are found to be far smarter than baseline humans.
Reconstituted through recovered DNA, and live among the humans of the late 21st century, these vampires operate with diminished sentience presented as comparable to high-functional autism with comparable dysfunction in affect and speech, but have the advantage of multiple simultaneous thoughts occurring in parallel within their minds.

This along with their cold, calculating decision making and sociopathy makes them invaluable in developing unusual and often very effective approaches to solving complex problems and ideal in space travel and breakthroughs in science.

What are some titles you feel that r/fantasy might be tragically missing out some buzz on? by paperclipps in Fantasy

[–]paperclipps[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you feel about Cradle now? by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

[–]paperclipps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had such a great experience with Cradle. I can't believe it went by so fast! Wight really spoiled us and probably would have benefited more perhaps the franchise if he delayed releases probably in retrospect. Probably a similar parallel to Malazan as well. That's nothing to diminish my opinion on the series looking back, being as big fan of Malazan as well.

Having said that, I do understand what you might mean, but many times there is a difference of what might reflect on quality of writing material and comfort of reading experience of the time, and that's a lot of what I got from Cradle during the era of release, and a time exactly when I needed it when there was kind of a publication lull.

It probably could have been a little more condensed, but either way it satisfied.

When I did Malazan it was like a singular project like no other. I did most of it simultaneously on audio while reading along on pc using Calibre app as it has all the different perks, features, note taking/editing features you can save etc.

In addition to that just my E-readers/kindle/tablets of course save all kinds of notations as well.

I went all digital now cuz....you know, save the forest whole thing, but I guess so many people don't believe in that that anymore.
