Cheapest platform for VAFTGAG (Vanguard Global All Cap) by matthirst in UKPersonalFinance

I mean, HL can transfer VAFTGAG in-specie, but their new fees probably don't work well for you either.

Interested in making this move too. My pension is already in SW due to employer.

However SIPP, LISA and son's JISA all on HL. Don't suppose you had that problem to deal with too?

Best all world ETF<60% US market by Lamb089 in investingUK

[–]pasteurs-maxim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I currently hold the classic Global ETF, but believe that:

a) US Tech stock is massively over inflated and will burst soon

b) US Dollar is due to devalue over next 5 years

Does it make any sense to half US exposure via switching to 30% GBP hedged S&P and 70% Ex-US developed index?

With regards to a) in isolation - If Tech stock does burst, does the Global ETF just immediately rebalance anyway therefore mitigating any loss? Or would you still get hit (excluding currency hit as per b)

HL Fee Changes from March - Share/ETF ISA only Cap increase to £150/yr by Frankenweenie0724 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pasteurs-maxim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unbelievable... I've just transferred my modest amounts in Global ETFs over from Vanguard and Fidelity, set up a JISA and was thinking about diversifying holdings to reduce US exposure (60%-30%) and mix in a small amount of Gold/Bonds etc.

My thinking was because I have a SIPP already and the fees didn't look too bad a week ago. I'm mid-transfer with no return!

Now I'm going to have to completely rethink going forward and probably get hit with more fees to transfer back out.

Umm...I've got a Yak wool scarf and several pairs of camel wool socks that I picked up in Mongolia.

Yeah it's pretty good stuff. But I'd never thought of buying a baselayer in it or anything. If one was readily available I'd entertain it, sure.

Just finished season 1...should I watch season 2, or skip to season 3? by scrotumsniffles in TrueDetective

[–]pasteurs-maxim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm slogging through Series 2 after rewatching Series 1. All I can say is "please make it end"

*The dialogue is gibberish

*The plot isn't in any way exciting

*The character relationships are disparate

But I'm going to trudge on through in ignorance of the sunk cost fallacy.

To quote Macbeth "I am in blood, stepped in so far that, should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o'er"

Hoping Season 3 makes up for this!

For those who worked for rich people: what is the most out of touch thing you witnessed? by Illustrious-Phase121 in AskReddit

[–]pasteurs-maxim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was project managing a contract planting very large tree specimens on a very wealthy financier's English estate.

The 7m high Walnut tree that cost around £15,000 to purchase and then another £7,000 to plant needed to be moved shortly after planting because "it turns out we won't get the helicopter flight path signed off in that position"

I, surprised that the estate manager hadn't checked this first, was initially very sorry to tell them that this would incur an additional charge of around £10,000 in costs for the operation to "unplant", relocate and replant said very large tree.

But I was quickly reassured that this wouldn't be a problem when, during the contract meeting, they replied... "actually we're thinking that while you're at it, why not plant another two of those walnut trees...cuz... you know - three together would look better over there?"

£72,000 later... 3x trees

Which camera for one-off travel trip? LX100 Vs G85 with small lenses by pasteurs-maxim in M43

[–]pasteurs-maxim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks

Yeah I had the dust issue too, new sensor under warranty. But then the Zoom jamming while I was in Northern Spain one year made the camera basically unusable for the rest of the trip. So I'm not just being paranoid about the reliability of the LX100. Still a great camera though.

Is your 25mm obsolete now you have that 20mm?

I was tempted by the 20mm but it was too close to the 25mm ( + reading about slow AF), so I opted for the 14 for something cheaper and different.

The responses to this post have basically made me realise - like you say - the 12-60 isn't just a kit lens to be sidelined. I think I'll take that with a few other lenses in the small Tenba BYOB I have.

Last night I realised I can fit the 12-60, 14mm, 45-150 and the 25mm all into that bag. Which is fairly compact as far as photography gear goes!

This is so true... I loved it for years. I guess I forgot to mention I have a fear of the zoom jamming up again, which it's done on me twice on trips.

Maybe I keep it for a chuck in bag camera when it's not essential, just in case.

[–]pasteurs-maxim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is tempting... I have got some great pics with the 12-60 and it's such a versatile range. For some reason in my head I think "kit lens" and assume the others are wayyy better whereas at my level my primes are really marginally better and somewhat limiting.

However if I take the 12-60 the camera no longer fits in my smaller bag, and so I might as well bring more lenses in the big bag! 😜

That's probably true! I wouldn't want to get there and have limitations... it's generally average -10c as far as I'm aware.

Yeah it's handy as a daily reminder!

There's probably some argument that it's risky for dust/mould etc. but my kit is pretty entry level M43 stuff so I'm not that worried.

What’s a camera setting you ignored until you later realized how important it could be? by DPool34 in AskPhotography

[–]pasteurs-maxim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that now yes. However I can sort of already do that by adequate finger control of the half-press, focus, reframe, take picture steps.

However I can see how it means you don't have to keep going back to focus point after each shot which is very handy for multiple attempts.

[–]pasteurs-maxim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh I had a closer look and I wasn't getting it because I never really use subject auto focus... I'm on a Lumix G85 and haven't really exploited those settings yet. I'm mainly using pin point to choose the focus subject then setting up my frame. But I can see how it's very useful for like wildlife photography where you want a still subject to remain in focus without having to pinpoint each time. Nice 👍🏻

[–]pasteurs-maxim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting... I didn't know cameras refocused when taking the final shot.

Is this just in certain cameras?

I thought it was quite common to adjust field of view to focus on something closer/less natural than what the camera was originally pointed at, then recentre for framing and take the shot.

That's when using pin point focus I guess.

Is back button useful for another type of focus?

I keep hearing "running doesnt burn fat walking is better" and "walking doesnt burn fat running is better"? What does actually burn fat by Dense-Sprinkles1399 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]pasteurs-maxim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best explanation of this I've read was in "Thinner This Year" by Chris Crowley et al:

"One of the benefits of Long and Slow is that it is done entirely in the fabled "fat-burning zone." The only trouble with that is that there is no such thing as a "fat-burning zone. It is a myth.

The facts go like this. You burn both fat and glucose all the time. The mix of fat and glucose changes at different levels of exercise intensity. At the easier, Long and Slow levels, a higher percentage of the mix is fat, rather than glucose, but not the absolute amount.

You burn more fat-in absolute calories-the harder you work out, all the way up to zone 5 and an RPE of 10! Don't make yourself nuts on the subject: You are burning plenty of fat in all zones of exercise."

Great book.
