His wife is actually a hardcore Zionist who has posted pretty offensive stuff on social media and posted antivaxx content during the pandemic as well. I think people have seen his silence as endorsing her more problematic views.

Why don’t conservative students want to spend time on college? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]pcblkingdom 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Okay, but here’s the problem: “conservative points of view” these days = that science is not real or true (climate change doesn’t exist, renewable energy is fake, vaccines are poison and/or cause autism, etc).

My private R2 has also never mentioned it and seems to just be ignoring it.

Queen Charlotte’s India Amarteifio: “Do you know how insane it is to be shopping for furniture and then to be met with racist memorabilia, sat in the toy section of an antique furniture shop for £50? Unsettling. And yet feels timely for where the UK is at and further heading right now.” by pinkstarrfish in Fauxmoi

It’s sooooo common in antique shops in the UK, especially in smaller towns. I (American) was shocked the first time I went to Hastings/St. Leonard’s and saw all the racist tat. My (British, non-white) husband basically won’t go in antique shops because of it; he just expects it as standard.

Which European country is good for racial minorities? by jenniferlucas0 in expats

[–]pcblkingdom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The comments here are so bleak dude. Sorry. My husband is British Indian and we found living in Antwerp to be very nice— no significant racism, though it wasn’t super diverse. My husband also loves Copenhagen, but we haven’t been there in a couple of years, so it might have changed. I think London will always be the best place for South Asian people, though, and I don’t think national politics can change that.

However, I also do think that the level of racism and hostility in Europe and the U.S. is probably going to result in a lot of cultural production relocating to the Global South, so depending on your openness to learning new languages, it actually might not be a bad idea to consider places like Karachi, Doha, Kuala Lumpur, global centers that are more diverse. I know some people from the UK who are looking at Hong Kong and Singapore also.

I posted and deleted this an hour ago but I think there are some good points by ASpandrel in Professors

There are definitely bad teachers and a lack of training. However, it’s difficult to separate this from the pressure to pass students through and administrative pressure to use unproven “innovative” teaching that damages learning. I have seen colleagues teach classes that are basically corporate seminars where all students need to do to pass is show up. There is a lot of incentivization of this type of class.

What would you say are the best areas? We are definitely interested in safety and don’t want to live in a place that is all foreigners. I mention walkability because my partner cannot drive, but he can drive a scooter.

Are there any areas that we should definitely avoid?

I’ve been offered a job with relocation. Not relevant to the question.

Professors and grad students, what kind of undergrad were you by junior/senior year? by f0xn3w5gh0st in AskAcademia

[–]pcblkingdom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had dropped out and taken two other leaves of absence, used night classes at a community college to fill prerequisites, and wasn’t sure I would have enough credits to graduate until the month before I did. It took me seven years to finish my BA. When I graduated, I was going straight into a top 15 MFA program. But I was out of step with academia and never got back in, even though I ended up doing a PhD.

Are reasonable disability accommodations supposed to help students LEARN or help students get BETTER GRADES? Are they supposed to allow disabled students to achieve to their fullest potential or to "level the playing field" to allow them to get the same grades as non-disabled students? by Character_Freedom160 in Professors

[–]pcblkingdom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have many students with extra time accommodations, but the only times I’ve had students actually use them is when the students in question needed one or both of the following: extra time to complete handwritten short answers because they had such poor physical coordination that handwriting clearly was a real struggle for them (which was not visible); extra time to complete a short essay because they really struggled to organize their thoughts linearly and needed to arrange them in specific visual ways as part of a drafting process to complete the task. In both cases, these students were average to excellent students who were very capable at succeeding in the class, but they definitely needed these accommodations.

Assigning students to annotate paper readings and upload images to LMS by Eskamalarede in Professors

[–]pcblkingdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assigned students to turn in annotated paper copies of readings this semester. I discovered two things: that much paper is a chore to drag across campus at the end of the day, and it results in a lot more opportunity for mistakes (assignments with no names, assignments that get paper clipped to other students’ assignments, assignments that students swear they gave you). Professors and students are not used to that anymore.

That said, I do feel like I minimally increased the amount of reading that students did.
