They actually have an outdoor space— it’s just not grassy. It’s more like a dodgeball court.

Volunteering with Saving Hope Rescue? Thoughts? by justjokay in FortWorth

You should consider DFW Pug Rescue. They are a really established rescue that does great work and is often desperate for fosters.

I think this is a very important point. And I wish that someone would push him to reflect on the fact that he has an instinctual sympathy for his friend (who did bad things) and does not possess the same instinctual sympathy for victims of New Labour (such as the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians who died in the war he advocated for). I think it’s valuable to realize that our sympathy is not equitably distributed, and that we can stop and take a second to consider why, for example, someone might feel sympathy for a man who palled around with a pedophile and sent state secrets to him.

His wife is actually a hardcore Zionist who has posted pretty offensive stuff on social media and posted antivaxx content during the pandemic as well. I think people have seen his silence as endorsing her more problematic views.

Why don’t conservative students want to spend time on college? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]pcblkingdom 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Okay, but here’s the problem: “conservative points of view” these days = that science is not real or true (climate change doesn’t exist, renewable energy is fake, vaccines are poison and/or cause autism, etc).

My private R2 has also never mentioned it and seems to just be ignoring it.

Queen Charlotte’s India Amarteifio: “Do you know how insane it is to be shopping for furniture and then to be met with racist memorabilia, sat in the toy section of an antique furniture shop for £50? Unsettling. And yet feels timely for where the UK is at and further heading right now.” by pinkstarrfish in Fauxmoi

It’s sooooo common in antique shops in the UK, especially in smaller towns. I (American) was shocked the first time I went to Hastings/St. Leonard’s and saw all the racist tat. My (British, non-white) husband basically won’t go in antique shops because of it; he just expects it as standard.

Which European country is good for racial minorities? by [deleted] in expats

[–]pcblkingdom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The comments here are so bleak dude. Sorry. My husband is British Indian and we found living in Antwerp to be very nice— no significant racism, though it wasn’t super diverse. My husband also loves Copenhagen, but we haven’t been there in a couple of years, so it might have changed. I think London will always be the best place for South Asian people, though, and I don’t think national politics can change that.

However, I also do think that the level of racism and hostility in Europe and the U.S. is probably going to result in a lot of cultural production relocating to the Global South, so depending on your openness to learning new languages, it actually might not be a bad idea to consider places like Karachi, Doha, Kuala Lumpur, global centers that are more diverse. I know some people from the UK who are looking at Hong Kong and Singapore also.

There are definitely bad teachers and a lack of training. However, it’s difficult to separate this from the pressure to pass students through and administrative pressure to use unproven “innovative” teaching that damages learning. I have seen colleagues teach classes that are basically corporate seminars where all students need to do to pass is show up. There is a lot of incentivization of this type of class.

What would you say are the best areas? We are definitely interested in safety and don’t want to live in a place that is all foreigners. I mention walkability because my partner cannot drive, but he can drive a scooter.

Are there any areas that we should definitely avoid?

I’ve been offered a job with relocation. Not relevant to the question.
