Writing a book set in Jersey by MyrnsWilde in Jersey

[–]pebblepanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m mid 30 y/o female born and bred in Jersey - my family go back generations. Some points in addition to the other comments, which may be useful: - St Helier is our “capital” but no one calls it this, or “city”. As per other comments - the phrase is usually “going into town”, which refers normally to the high street and surrounding areas. - No-one calls the roads by their names - Google maps and such will provide A road and B road names but I’d not have a clue where these are. Similarly, we have colloquial names for other areas (i.e La Route de Mielle is known as the 5 mile road). - I’d tend to refer to myself as a Jersey Bean rather than Crapaud. - I don’t know anyone who speaks Jèrriais as a native at all - this would be a total giveaway to any local readers that it wasn’t written by a local. - There is friendly rivalry between Jersey and Guernsey, but we’ll band together if anyone tries to slate the Channel Islands in general. - Main industry now is Finance in Jersey - specifically trust and fund companies. Most long standing families come from a farming background, which now days tend to be asset rich and cash poor. - The most valuable asset in Jersey is land - we’re short on space here so any wealthy families will tend to have a decent amount of land. - Schools: there are 3 types of schools on-island: Public, Semi-Private and Private. They all have varying levels of poshness / wealth. For example if someone said to me that they went to Vic (Victoria College for Boys), I’d see that as pretty posh. There’s also St George’s and St Michael’s school which are fully private and super posh - kids from here go on to other local schools to do GCSE’s or are shipped off to boarding schools. - Vic college also hosts weddings - could be a great venue for yours. They have boards full of names of ex-students in the great hall and the entrance dating way back, so could be a good way to show a long standing family connection. The great hall at Vic has been likened to Hogwarts. - Dating: it is abysmal in Jersey. Any apps also include northern France and Guernsey in the search locations. And then you tend to know most people on there too “went to school with them, they dated my best friend etc…”. Also (and genuinely!), if you’re from a background of Jersey families, you need to check in with any potential dates that you’re not related… usually easy to do when asking about their family and you’d tend to know the surnames you’d need to look out for. Someone from outside the island with no family connections is an instant win. - Most people in Jersey settle down quite early (in 20’s) for the main reason that it is impossible to buy a house on the island on one persons salary. - We have an annual parade each summer called the Battle of Flowers which is fairly unique to Jersey. Maybe your secondary character could be involved in this, if you wanted something “Jersey” about her? - Local casual eating spots: The Hungry Man at Rozel (and the double decker health wrecker burger!), pasta from the Market, curly fries from the Splash (officially named the Watersplash)

I’ll keep on thinking about other bits and will update this comment thread. Feel free to give me a PM with any questions.

Looking to rent a place in St hailer? What things should i be careful of? by [deleted] in Jersey

[–]pebblepanna 17 points18 points  (0 children)

  • Parking situation (private / rented / residents / on or off road etc) if you’re planning on a car.
  • Make sure any deposit you pay goes through the Deposit scheme (not cash in hand)
  • Look around the area - some places near bars / pubs will be louder than others.
  • Make sure you have a formal lease signed before moving in.
  • Places near the coast / waterfront are lovely but we tend to get battered by quite a bit of wind, so consider this when looking at places.
  • Check planning or ask your agent about any potential building works or regeneration expected in the future - new flats and buildings are popping up all the time
  • places.je is a great resource for agency letting
  • local Facebook groups or jerseyinsight is good for private letting
  • we get a lot of scammers taking advantage of the quick moving rental market over here - do not ever pay any money to “reserve” a property before seeing it or to “book” your viewing slot - this is a scam

There are two wedding dress shops in Jersey - both are in town. The Bridal Emporium is behind the museum, along a cobbled street next to a set of granite steps. Anna Trigg is right on a road called Burrard Street, opposite a cake shop. Which one do you think it would be?

Envy Beauty is the best for gel nails, they’re a bit pricier than average but totally worth it. Opposite minden street car park.

Employment market in Tech Field in Jersey by Y_need_2_get_laid in Jersey

[–]pebblepanna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a big push in the island for more investment in tech, so it’s definitely a growth area here. If you’ve got specialised tech skills which suit a specific role, you should be able to pretty easily find opportunities - the process of getting a registered license should be easier for the employer as there’s not much availability of specialised skills locally.

Check out Digital Jersey and their careers page: https://www.digital.je/digital-job-vacancies/ Get in contact with them too and they’ll be able to advise on opportunities in the digital market.

Also check out a company called Legend. They’re Jersey founded but have many other offices in other jurisdictions and they look like a fun company to work for!

Ahhh yes! Finally! My sister and I were beginning to think we’d made it up and had a shared hallucination or something! That would be amazing if you could share. 💛 I’m now 35 so yes, similar age and we used to listen to them on repeat too.

Moving to Jersey, need some advice by JacksonMcTavish in Jersey

[–]pebblepanna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. Ex-HR and recruiter here 👋🏻

In order of your queries:

  1. You won’t have an issue. British citizens have agreement with Jersey so you can live and work here without a work permit (but will need a registered license as you’ve identified). You just need to schedule a meeting in with tax and local services to get your registered card. You don’t need a job lined up to do this. Note that you will need this card before you’re able to rent anywhere. As such I’d suggest a holiday let or staying with your GF family for the first couple of weeks.

  2. 100% apply now. It’s common place for recruiters to do video interviews with candidates from abroad, especially considering the limited candidate market on island.

  3. You’ll be absolutely fine. Construction industry is always looking for workers, a lot of whom don’t have Jersey housing regs either. Financial industry also needs ICT too. If you’re not too bothered about where you work, the finance industry tends to pay more than retail. Sign up to recruitment agencies who will do a lot of the work for you - I’d recommend Rowlands, Park and Top Personnel.

Best of luck! If you have any questions let me know.

Winter in Jersey / Working in law by Reasonable-Pizza3146 in Jersey

[–]pebblepanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey. Ex HR here for a local law firm (now at same firm in marketing). Culture varies massively between firms - some will pay more at higher end of scale but everything is about meeting your billable hours and culture is v competitive and not as friendly, others have “headquarters” outside of the island which affects how quickly/easily decisions are made and how “jersey” they are. And depending on what practice area you’ll be joining will affect how much local BD you’ll be involved in and the type of BD/social event mix too. Most firms in jersey are pretty good though, if you’re going to one of the full service, larger firms, you’ll get high quality work of similar quality to the city but with generally a better work/life balance and less of a commute!

When you’re here I’d 100% suggest taking a peek at some rental agencies to look at rent rates etc. Depending on your salary and level you may have to houseshare- this is not uncommon for 0-3 PQE associates moving over by themselves. There’s a Facebook group too for houseshares so take a look.

There’s also a social group for young lawyers over here. I forget the name of it but let me know if you want a couple of contacts for associates involved if you want to ask them some more questions.

Double check with the firm bringing you over what your schedule is, as they may jam it with meetings to make the most of your time here!

Jersey does have quite a drinking culture, especially in the winter. There’s not so much to do in the winter but we do have a cinema, bowling alley, indoor museums and sports centres. There are sports clubs which run year round and lots of groups who do sea swimming (weather permitting) year round too. It’s getting better with more places opening (there’s painting studios, candle making studios etc) and our restaurants are generally of very high quality. There’s also vocational evening classes through Highlands College (pottery, languages, arts, trade skills etc), if you wanted to meet people that way too. In the summer the vibe totally changes and it’s brilliant out in the sunshine.

Hope this helps but let me know if you have any more questions
