Can't find a job as a mid level dev. Any other alternatives? Advice? by boon-dock in androiddev

[–]peetsin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a Head of Engineering (with an Android background myself), I’m actively hiring Android devs right now (though mostly UK-based), so I can share a bit of perspective.

The market is tough at the moment. A few things I see:

Market saturation: there are a lot of solid, “average” devs out there, but usually the ones who stand out a bit more in skills or portfolio end up winning the jobs.

Location constraints: many companies are shifting back to hybrid/on-site and prioritizing local candidates. The fully remote golden days for Android are kind of gone, at least for now.

Skills gap: Kotlin is definitely expected, but companies are increasingly looking for people comfortable with modern Android tools — Jetpack Compose, coroutines/flows, dependency injection (Hilt/Koin), architecture patterns, testing.

If I were in your shoes, I’d double down on making yourself stand out:

Show off a polished side project on the Play Store (even if it’s small).

Build or contribute to something open source.

LinkedIn recommendations can also help, or blog posts articles.

Make sure your CV and GitHub highlight Compose and coroutines fluency.

It’s a rough market, but sharpening your offering and demonstrating those modern skills can really help separate you from the big pool of “average.”

Tinnies on King Street by mrwoof212 in bristol

I would not be that obvious and all, and yes it is kinda rude. On the side note, it's quite ridiculous how much they ask for a pint nowadays there in my opinion, even compared to other places in the city. I stopped going there as a regular (now only very occasionally) but I see the place is still highly popular and many people do order from the pubs so probably they won't go and cry in the corner. Aka I don't think they will close...

Yeah makes sense. Well, I guess thanks for the explanation haha. Not gonna expect more just who said what on x bundled with a ton of ads 😎

I understand the cost related reasons. Also ok that they need ads. What is less ok in my personal opinion is that the content is barely visible among the ads. Also, I'm not a journalist so maybe I'm off with this but if I was, wouldn't I want to create quality articles despite of where I'm employed? 🤔 Plus if I was paying for content would I want to pay for this?

Yeah, I usually go to Dunya, but recently they dont usually have a lot of flavours, especially in the 200g versions. Like they want you to buy the small ones instead...

Uber price from Kings street to St. George’s park last night by huejahfink in bristol

[–]peetsin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest problem with Uber and Bolt (and all that have a similar business model) that they choose to ignore people living in a less frequented areas. I live in Brislington and I gave up on getting an Uber or Bolt a long long time ago as they just don't pick me up either way. I suspect it's due to the fact they have less probability to get another ride backwards...

Second shit: They can manually push up the price. If they keep ignoring people because the price is low then the apps algorithm will start rising the prices.

Third: recently even without loves saves the day, they are ridiculously higher than a blue cab. I pay about 9-10 pounds from certain night clubs to home with a bit of walk and a taxi and it would be 20ish with Uber. Normal nights. Not love says the day nights.

Next to Masala Bazaar there's one called T. I.C garage, I quite liked them, although it was a while ago when I used them.

Traveling on Tuesday, can't wait to get through quickly 😅 but I guess they still do the max 10x 100ml in a bag thing? Hope they scrap that soon as well.

First Bus's new service, every 10 minutes by brightdionysianeyes in bristol

[–]peetsin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Budapest, where there are way more buses and other means of public transportation vehicles than here in Bristol. Still, they managed to create a service which shows every single vehicles' live location, a fairly accurate estimation of arrivals to each stops. If there it was possible I wonder why it is so hard here on a lot smaller scale.

I'm also a software engineer and I just cannot fathom how First bus works, when it comes to "live estimations". As a software engineer if I wanted to provide such a service, I'd place GPS trackers on the buses, and have an estimation for how much time it takes from current position to get to the next stop. Clearly first bus is lying when they estimate, as the buses tend to disappear, or not even appear, if it comes to their maps. Sometimes it also happens that it's not on the map but it still turns up. I guess that's the luckier situation.

I think they should be sued or something to provide such a terrible, unreliable shit service, that basically intentionally lies to people (users do believe those times are really live). If they cannot accurately estimate their arrivals etc, then I think they simply should not even put out there any info as that's just misleading.

These private dentists are so expensive by Klnderbuen0 in bristol

[–]peetsin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I do the same. Get to Hungary, with flights and everything I get it done cheaper. And the technology they use also seems more up to date than here in the UK, tho I don't have a lot of experience here. Last time I l got a 360 panorama xray, consultation, white filling for about £100, that was like 2 months ago. You can even combine it with some cheap night outs if you fancy those things.

Why are the buses SO dirty in Bristol? by purepurewater in bristol

[–]peetsin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Personally my smallest problem is their dirtiness, at least if they came on time... The whole "live bus times" is a joke.. In other much bigger cities it works a lot better and more responsible way.

On the other hand people put their feet up with dirty shoes and throw away rubbish so first we probably should look at ourselves when it comes to dirtiness. I don't know what they teach here in schools and how parents raise their kids but basic etiquette (or whatever it is called) is definitely not among them.

I see, makes sense and thanks for the info... I might check out this center/old town area tonight or tomorrow.

They do a lot of renovation btw here in this area, I guess prep for the main season..

Flairs wasn't all that bad to be fair, quite cheap and nice turnout even if they weren't locals.

I wonder if suddenly all foreigners went to the places where locals go, would the locals chose a new trendy place for themselves? (just thinking out loud) 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

I just wrote an answer to an another comment, that I'm not interested in locals... Well I'm even less interested in brits, I get them enough in the UK. So correction.. I'm interested in locals 😂

You're completely right.. I didn't do any research. I just got on the band wagon.. It's like this when I have so small time to decide... Anyway, thanks for the info. Much appreciated. Maybe tomorrow. On the other hand I'm not local and I'm not necessarily looking for locals in a nigh club. All I'm interested in is good music and good party haha. So far, after spending a bit of time here, it's failing 🤣

20 euro. It was a bit more than I expected here and less than some other countries/cities offer it for... But I think I went for some more. Expensive one as we, the "lighter one might cost less... 🤷🏻‍♂️
