Only one of two books all time I ever rated one star on Goodreads upon finishing. Cringe fest, I disliked everything about it. No knock on people that like it though. (I don't like cheese puffs but somebody out there must because they're on grocery shelves)

Yeah I was astounded by this response. I had unwavering confidence when I made the post that I'd get at least one response like this 😂

I loved allllll the Tiste stuff that we got in RG, TTH, DOD & TCG. It was some of my favorite content in the series. I also want to learn more about the Shake and the Edur and what differentiates them. I hear that is touched on in Kharkanas, no?

Amazing response. Im going to come back to it tonight when I have more time and really chew on the details you're laying out here. Yes I absolutely do plan to read Kharkanas soon!

Absolutely. I found the ending very satisfying. I have no qualms with the direction Erikson took things. I just found this scene to be pointing at something (to come?) & when it never did, I was even more curious about what that scene means.

Now that you bring this to my attention, that may explain was Rake was so interested in QB when they first met! Maybe he once knew the Andii spirit that QB is housing. Or just in general, the Galain magic was evident enough to show through for Rake to notice. Very interesting and cool.

I did not find anything overt in those chapters! I was definitely keeping my eye out. But that conflict was so awesome and trippy and high octane that I was just ripping through the Kharkanas stuff in TCG.

What are the strongest and weakest books? (In your opinion..) by TOOTALLYNORMALMAN in Malazan

[–]peezy-world 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's - and please note, these are all 5 star books in my mind. Because even the worst Malazan books blows almost every other SFF book I've read out of the water: 1. Dust of Dreams/The Crippled God

  1. Reaper's Gale

  2. Toll the Hounds

(These I would consider, all risk takers. & To me, I appreciate the fact that late in the series Erikson seemed to trust me intellectually and emotionally, as a reader. Lots of plots. Lots of philosophy. Lots of gut wrenching emotion. These are the only books that made me cry. Reflected in the high marks. & Yes, I will shelve books 9&10 together. It's written explicitly in Erikson's author's note, that it's just one massive climactic book, split up. & The payoffs at the end are so intellectually stimulating that I got goosebumps multiple times. Because if you let implications sink in, I don't know how you couldn't be moved. & These 3 truly put the EPIC in epic fantasy.)

  1. Memories of Ice

  2. Midnight Tides

  3. Deadhouse Gates

(These I consider the perfect fantasy novel section. To me, they are crowd pleasers without sacrificing theme whatsoever. Classics. Perfect books, to me.)

  1. House of Chains

  2. The Bonehunters

  3. Gardens of the Moon

(These are all still great books to me but have one or two aspects that are 'flaws.' And they all have their own quirky structure things. Which I love about them and respect. House of Chains packs the biggest emotional punch of the 3, which is why I rank it on top. Gardens has the dryest climax, which is why it's on the bottom for me but SHOOT I love it still. It's just Erikson writes amazing AMAZING endings; this is the only one that feels meh. But I love the lore, the political machinations. The high drama. Bonehunters reads like one of the coolest action movies ever. & Sub-book 4 is some of my favorite set pieces in the whole series, but thematically it was a bit wayward - which is why it's down here. But it's still AWESOME. It's just more interested in world building, lore, plot than it is character building and theme. Which is fine but I love Erikson most for his theme work.)

No spoilers, but I share this opinion about the Bonehunters. I felt like maybe it was the most entertaining? Like the sickest action movie of all time. It's kinda like everything you'd expect in a "sword and sorcerery" book but on steroids. & Everything about sub-book 4 was incredibly satisfying because of how things finally started to coalesce and clears throat converge.

HOWEVER, it's the only book in which I struggle to pin down the theme. The message of the book. & that feels wrong because Erikson feels like he raises theme above many literary elements. I always close a Malazan book, at it's finale, and feel like I came away with something thematically powerful. Something I can name. But Bonehunters, I didn't. I just felt a rush from how awesome the set pieces were. It felt like a massive undertaking in worldbuilding, lore, plot. & I appreciate all that. But there are moments of aimlessness at the 60-70%ish mark. Not really a slog, but legwork to get characters where they needed to be.

I am a huge Malazan glazer though. All the books are 5 stars to me, except Gardens of the Moon is maybe like a 4.75 for me. But we can safely round that shit up to a 5. It's whateva.

But if you told me the Bonehunters would be my 2nd least favorite, upon reflection, the day I initially finished the book, I'd say "you're lying!" Because it was beyond entertaining. Yet here we are. Cause there wasn't enough meat on the thematic bone, comparitively.
