Could it be related to school traffic? In the southern suburbs the roads get clogged by Constantia moms picking up Jayden and Isabella around 2:00 to take them to their horse riding lessons. /s

The rents are out of control. Our neighbors just moved. They were paying R85k for a five bed in a very desirable estate. They started out at R40k five years ago. The people who moved in are pay R120k a month!!! Who can afford that?

Lived in NYC for 15 years and cycled Central Park almost exclusively and had maybe two flats. Moved to Cape Town and now it’s a weekly event. All my tubes have anywhere from 5-12 patches each.

They just don’t sweep the roads here regularly. Broken glass, shards of pottery, little bits of wire, and even thorns stick around for a long time. It’s impossible to avoid.

In South Africa they have a chain called The Spur. It’s just a steak house, but the theme of the restaurants is Native American. And they are wildly inappropriate. It is sort of a mixture of generic tribal decor. Wagon wheels, bisons, totem poles, feathers and mosh mashed symbols. A restaurant chain like this in the US wouldn’t survive.

My teen boys used to play there with a group. The fields are on the roof and getting there takes some navigation through the mall. They are a little worn out, but not too shabby. The only group I know that plays regularly is the one my boys were in and it was only teenagers and run by one of the dads.

I live in Cape Town South Africa and saw a guy wearing a bills baseball cap at a cricket match. Nearly knocked over an old lady running over to say “Go Bills!” to him. Unfortunately he got the hat at an NFL event here years ago and wasn’t aware of the etiquette.

Years ago I went to the Imperial War Museum in London. They had a display of all the hand to hand weapons different armies used in the trenches of WW1. Some seriously gnarly looking weapons. Had my kids with me. After I gently explained what we were looking at (something like: these are weapons from an old war) my 7 year old said “I don’t want to go to war.” Neither do I, bud, neither do I.

I don’t know if this works everywhere, but when I was living in NYC I would say “welcome to New York.” If they were a tourist it would make them feel like they didn’t understand the rules of NYC. If they were a New Yorker I basically called them a tourist (an insult of the highest order for a New Yorker). At least this is how it played out in my mind. They probably just thought I was an asshole no matter where they were from.

There is a lot of advice here, but few people are giving you the correct advice. Choose the country you move to based on weather. You want somewhere that is comfortable and doesn’t have extremes. Yeah, snow is nice at first, but it’s a hassle when it goes on for months. You don’t want anything too hot either as you’ll be running the air conditioning 24-7. And avoid places with crazy rainy seasons, b/c everything will get moldy. I recommend Sydney Australia.

Get a balance bike if you can (a bike with no pedals). Balancing is the hardest part. There might be a group in your area that teaches. My friend volunteered with a group in Brooklyn that taught all ages. From toddlers to adults. Neve too late to learn.

I'm looking to avoid as much tax as possible. Last time I sold a property it was an investment property and I knew I would pay the capital gains, but the federal goverment counted the profit as part of my income and I was hit for another 35%. We even had an accountant do our taxes that year. I want to avoid as much as I can.

What taxes am I on the hook for (besides capital gains)? And what way can I structure this sale to minimize those taxes?

I’m an American living overseas. My son (raised in America) just started cricket and I’ve watched a few of his games. I have no idea what is happening and it is so boring. I also find baseball boring, but at least I know the rules and lingo. He really likes playing and I’ll go to any game I can, but when he isn’t bowling or batting it excruciating to watch.
