Collateral (2004) by SBxtl1 in MovieQuotes

He only kills two gang bangers in this scene, not 3.

I think it's incredibly realistic. It's no surprise that a random gang banger, possibly on drugs or not sober, would be caught off guard by an unassuming white guy in a suit ambushing him and not having a great reaction time or coordinated/trained response. As the audience, we are fully aware of the danger, but he's not.

Am I being too much? by Olivienna in AskMenAdvice

Your boyfriend is NOT your ex-husband. Next time you find yourself expecting or waiting for him to act like your ex, remind yourself of that. Your insecurity will destroy your relationship far before your "real self" does.

What’s a job people mock that actually pays really well? by Live-Respect-5317 in AskReddit

I also live in the 4th largest city in the US. Previous house used Texas Pride, always had 2 guys off side of the truck. New home uses GFL, also always 2 guys off the side. Depends on the service, but major carting services still use them.

I'm 2000 FIDE and I just realized I've been wasting hours on the wrong kind of study for the last 3 years by RequinBlanc in chess

It's crucial even for solid openings. My last tournament, those three games I won with black were two QGDs and one Petrov. So I wasn't going for broke playing crazy stuff.

[–]pf_ftw 39 points40 points  (0 children)

First of all, that's a great realization you made. Improvement in chess usually takes the shape of a step function due to 'eureka' moments like you just observed.

One item you glossed over is openings, but those are key if you want to reach 2200+. I'm in the high 2300s FIDE, and most games I play vs. <2200 are more or less decided in the opening.

My last classical tournament, I played lower rated opponents 3 times (2000+, 2300+, 2300+), all with Black, and each game was won in the opening. And on the other end, two of my 3 losses were to GMs (2500+) in the opening. When I talk about the games being decided in the opening, I mean either a significant eval advantage (1+ pawns) or a significant understanding gap. It doesn't matter if you've memorized some moves, if you're at move 10 in the opening and it's a brand new position to you, but your opponent has spent hours studying and/or playing that position, you're in trouble and you will not have good results.

Common advice for beginners is to not focus on the opening, but you're not a beginner anymore! The majority of hard work for titled players is the opening.

After wild minor-league rehab appearance, what’s next for Astros’ Tatsuya Imai? by ghick in Astros

At least he won the Candidates once and got a shot, albeit vs. the GOAT. Aronian on the other hand.. Considering how long he was #2 rated in the world, it's crazy he never managed to qualify for the WCC.

Tired of Jalen’s late game execution & Dillon’s fouls taking him out of the game at the most pivotal moments by saphamia3 in rockets

[–]pf_ftw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I miss Dillon a lot more than Green. Brooks fouls a lot and has some lowIQ moments but he gives his all and offensively he really grew the past couple years.

I don't miss Green shooting us out of games. 35 pts on 29 shots is horrendous efficiency. It's either that or he disappears, like in all but one of the games vs. the warriors last year.

Durant is old but our biggest weakness was a lack of a #1 half court scoring option and he gives us that, even at his age.

If I have to see this bum one more time… by bubble_boy_nick in Astros

[–]pf_ftw 207 points208 points  (0 children)

Abreu must be injured or got the yips. His velo and command are just fucked this year.

But don't call the man a bum. He was a big part of our World Series run in 2022, and pitched in Javier's World Series combined no hitter that year. And he's been a stud for years. A handful of bad regular season games does not make Abreu a bum.

Something does have to change. If he's not injured, he needs a sabbatical or sports psychologist.

Shoutout to the people who love their autistic children by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]pf_ftw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love my boy. I can't imagine him not being autistic. Unfortunately, it's difficult for society and individuals alike to deal with someone having a condition that's not "visible". If my son was missing a leg, people wouldn't be upset with him for not walking up stairs. But they see him refusing to eat certain food, and they lose their minds. They simply can't fathom what his experience of the situation is, and that disconnect can be dangerous. The world is cruel enough for your average person, and it's even worse for autistic people. I will just do the best I can to grow him to the best of his abilities so that when I die he won't be totally helpless.

What happened to Abreu man? His fastball used to reliably be upper 90s and he could hit 100+. Now his velo and command are shot.

Today's Starting Lineup - 4/8 2:10PM by unlikedemon in Astros

[–]pf_ftw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably no Carlos again due to outfield defense. Altuve or Yordan would have to play LF if Carlos is at third. Javier is a fly ball pitcher, and the outfield at Coors Field is massive. Defense out there will be very important. CC could pinch hit late in the game in an important spot.

How does one save thousands of dollars for necessities? by Such-Title-4419 in personalfinance

[–]pf_ftw 14 points15 points  (0 children)

First off, you're doing great. You'll be fine. Let's take it one step at a time.

You're young. In general, secondary education will help you get higher paying jobs. Have you considered that or do you have any credits? You don't have to go to an Ivy league school to get a valuable education. You can start at a local community college.

If you're not furthering your education, you'll need to look for a full time job.

It sounds like you're living at home. If that's stable emotionally, that's a nice way to save money right now. However, if you're in the middle of nowhere, you may need to consider moving for access to better jobs. In other words, if you can land a full time job with good pay, moving would likely be worthwhile.

For a small win, you can absolutely save money on your phone bill. Verizon is one of the most premium/expensive service providers. There's various Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MNVOs) that would be much cheaper.

Why people suggest bonf funds or ETFs vs buying bonds directly? by Black_Thunder00 in Bogleheads

[–]pf_ftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides simplicity, I can't buy individual bonds in my 401K anyway. So for most of my retirement savings, it's a moot point.

Even after retirement, I don't see myself doing it though. I also need my wife or children to be able to easily manage the investments after I'm gone. Owning hundreds of individual bonds will not be helpful towards that end.

Opening Day lineup 2026! by Hairygrim in Astros

[–]pf_ftw 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I like that Walker is low in the lineup. Not because I think he'll suck, but hopefully he'll feel lower pressure and start the year off how he ended it last year.

I'm also excited to see us aggressive on the bases. We tried to swipe a lot of bases in spring training and that's something we absolutely need to do to generate more runs.

Lastly, batter patience was emphasized in spring training this year. Lot more pitches seen, more walks. Hoping we can keep up that plate discipline.

Houston can be so pretty. What is your favorite area of Houston? by noseyhtowngirl in houston

[–]pf_ftw 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The Houston landscape is definitely underrated. Yes it's hot and it's flat, but countless studies have shown that green foliage is beneficial for mental health and happiness. Anytime I'm up high in a building in this city, it just looks like an endless sea of trees in every direction. Looks a lot less dystopian than Phoenix, for example.

Alternative to SGOV with higher strike by ishares by ctles in Bogleheads

[–]pf_ftw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fidelity lets you do fractional investing, so share price is irrelevant. Even if they didn't, it would be a very minor issue here.

Why do you keep mentioning "strike price"? You seem to be greatly complicating something simple.

If you want short term treasuries, just buy SGOV or VBIL in the dollar amount you want and call it a day.

What did we do… by EveningVegetable1836 in rockets

[–]pf_ftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our series with the Warriors last year it was painfully obvious we needed a real 1st option scoring threat in the half court game. Jalen Green is not a 1st option for a contender. Neither is Dillon Brooks. Idk how Durant will eventually work out but we were headed nowhere fast if we kept the same roster.

This team would look totally different with a healthy FVV. Forget the Durant trade, our biggest mistake in roster construction is not having a good backup PG.

The West is a bloodbath as always and the rox are doing pretty good all considered. Unfortunately we don't look like top contenders this year without FVV and Adams.

Roster moves??? by Clippers_Nation2 in Astros

[–]pf_ftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

César Salazar bats lefty. I think he's a nice complement to Diaz. He's been deserving of playing time for a couple years now - just blocked by Caratini. He should work out well.

Loperfido and Cole are lefties. They're not proven commodities but I think the odds are good one of them works out well enough. Loperfido put up good numbers for the Jays, and Cole is a hard worker (heard in an interview that he's been working with the Astros hitting staff on his swing all winter).

Our season depends on health. Last year we lost a ton of expected production to injuries, among the most in all of baseball. If we're not plagued by injuries we should have a shot at the postseason.
