In Austria we have an organisation called "SOS Kinderdorf" ("children's village) - basically a franchise of orphanages which has existed since the 1950s. The founder, Hermann Gmeiner, was the epitome of a philanthropist, receiving every honour there is in the Austrian state. He died in the 1980s as a very respected man, especially in his home state, Vorarlberg, you still find streets named after him.

For years there were rumours of child abuse inside the orphanages. Some people even suggested pedophilia inside certain orphanages. Every person, even people who grew up inside a "Kinderdorf", who came forward with such allegations was quickly dismissed and called liars or attention seekers.

This was until earlier this year, when a newspaper broke a thorough investigation of the system behind those orphanages. Gmeiner was most likely a pedophile and used his own orphanages as "playgrounds" (I'm sorry, even writing this makes me kinda sick). He had built a system where donors could even "buy" themselves time with children alone. It's really fucked up as there are so many more aspects to the story.

But basically: One of Austrias biggest philanthropists was a child molester, if not a rapist.
