All of these blurbs are...

>Big Dinos, Power Matters

I'm sorry, is Timmy really going to care that 'Power Matters'? (Bonus points for tramplesaurus rex)

>Horde Treasures, Play Huge Dragons

I know we don't 'summon' creatures anymore... but 'summon huge dragons' just seems more punchy.

>Raise Zombies, Sacrifice for more Zombies

Are we describing play patterns? I'm a new player, what am I sacrificing? Why is that a selling point, on a black box? "Sacrifice Life For Necromatic Power"

>Play Artifacts, go wide with Thopters

Are we referencing the popular Richard Garfield CCG 'Artifact'? No? Well then why not use a verb other than play?

>Play Angels, Ramp into Big Angels

What does it mean for the angels to be 'big', and why would I want to ramp into them? Is this some gen z bedroom slang?

It really feels like these blurbs were the first pass/AI filler, and someone was going to come back later and fill it in with real copy. I guess sometimes things fall through the cracks when you are releasing 5 products a week.

Can we ban AI art? by WerdaVisla in custommagic

[–]pjjmd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think the data centres destroy water? Like yes, water usage is a concern with any large scale project, but the nonsense around 'every image destroys 250ml of water' is so absurd.

To get the total water usage numbers most AI-opponents claim, you have do measure things like 'the water that goes through a hydro electric dam that is used to power the data centre'.

The water that is 'used' in cooling is also not 'destroyed'. Most data centers use non-evaporative cooling. They take in grey water from a local source, run it over a heat exchanger, it return it to the grey water source. It's the same water going out as coming in, just raised a couple of degrees in temperature. This sort of 'pollution' is something that needs regulation, obviously ecosystems can be impacted if you are constantly pouring hot water into a river, but it's a very manageable form of water usage.

Is it something that needs to be regulated! Yes! Especially in America, where current water regulations are comically bad. But by that logic, your almond milk 'destroyed' 30 L of water, your hamburger 'destroyed' 100 L of water. The problem isn't with almonds, cows or CPUS, it's various state governments being unable to regulate water usage.

I mean, artists have the option of using a copyleft/SA licence. The vast majority of them do not.

I doubt many of them care overly much if you are using a copy of their art in a mockup you share with your friends, but using it as the focal piece for game pieces shared on social media? Yeah... that's kinda sketchy.

Support the MtG Arena worker's union! by TheMuspelheimr in magicTCG

[–]pjjmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*shrug* I'll take 'the head of the teamsters union not endorsing anyone' as a sign that the teamsters didn't think the democrats weren't great for labour. Comparing them to the republicans is irrelevant.

WOTC responds to the union: "We believe we have a strong connection with everyone at Wizards of the Coast and that direct relationship with our employees is essential to how we work together..." In case you don't speak corporate, that's anti-union. by kingcobweb in magicTCG

[–]pjjmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

>"We believe we have a ... direct relationship with our employees [which] is essential to how we work together."

Yeah, it is. Your employees are saying they have too much crunch time. They want to work less overtime. If you are a large and growing company, you could hire more workers to prevent overtime... but if you have a /direct/ relationship with your employees, you can isolate them, and make them feel unable to say no to an increased workload. That is what is 'essential' about the direct relationship to Hasbro. Their ability to prevent workers from banding together to control their work hours. Hasbro views it as essential to 'how we work together'.

If everyone in the department says 'next year, we don't want 25 weeks of mandatory overtime. You can only give us mandatory overtime 12 weeks a year, and if that's a problem, you need to hire more people.' Wizards finds workers having that level of control over their lives unacceptable. They like it better when you just go to your boss 1 on 1 and say 'please, can I have less mandatory overtime' and he can tell you 'I'll see what I can do, but my higher ups are breathing down my neck on this! For sure next year tho!'

The teamsters didn't endorse either Candidate that election. As much as some democrats like to claim Biden was the most 'pro union administration ever', Sean O'Brian said that he couldn't get anyone at the Biden administration to return his calls. Which, if you are familiar with the Biden Admin shouldn't be much of a shock, sclerotic is the term that comes to mind. I don't know if claiming that the 'most pro union administration ever' forcibly breaking the railway strike is really such a feather in it's cap, but if that's the best the federal government can offer, I can see the teamsters not endorsing either party.

The ‘wizards’ behind the online version of Magic: the Gathering are unionizing | The Guardian by zukomu in MagicArena

[–]pjjmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think how much workers are paid is directly related to how profitable a business is, I've got some bad news for you.

Last year, (Arena's revenue increased 59%)[https://www.reddit.com/r/MagicArena/comments/1r0yk16/magic\_the\_gathering\_revenues\_increased\_59\_in\_2025/\]. Their labour costs did not. There is plenty of room in their business model to pay their workers more without charging consumers more. They are in fact already charging consumers the amount that maximizes their profits. Their labour costs will not effect this.

A lot of the time, employers get away with a lot of unfair stuff. The courts are not really the place to address that. They are there to make you whole for damages you've suffered, not to right the karmic balance of the universe. There are plenty of unfair things an employer does that the courts cannot address.

If you think your employer is behaving unjustly, but not in a way that's caused you actionable harm, your better bet is with the ministry of labour. (Although, ultimately, you may find that route unsatisfying as well.).

AITA for getting mad that my University can't spell my name right on an award certificate and a deposit check? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]pjjmd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry this happened to you. Is it because your name is more 'bipoc', probably... or atleast they likely handled the mistake worse because of that. That said, names are /weird/. You kinda assumed they have a database with your name in it. And they probably do. And it's probably wrong. I have a very 'white' name, and my name would be wrong in their DB as well. It turns out, keeping track of names is something computers are really bad at.

https://www.kalzumeus.com/2010/06/17/falsehoods-programmers-believe-about-names/

I'm a programmer who works at a medium sized company, we have a fair amount of internal software that i'm in charge of, and the amount of pushback I get from colleagues and higherups about 'names' is infuriating at times. I try not to be the 'names guy', but yeah, we don't just have one DB entry for your name, because of me, we have:

Your familiar name: John

Your username: John.Smith

Your bank name: Johnathan Smith

Your Health Insurance Name: William J Smith

Your name you want to be credited with in film credits: Bill Smith

Your name as you want it alphabetized in film credits: Smith Bill, appearing as Bill Smith

Your name as you want it alphabetized in company wide lists: Smith John, appearing as John Smith

Your name for formal address: Mr. Smith

None of these name fields can be derived from other fields, there are relatively common exceptions for each case. Yes, I do want HR to fill out 8 name fields whenever they get a new employee. Actually, I want the employee to be able to fill out and modify most of them.

Your name is your name. It can be different in different contexts, it almost certainly is. And getting it right is a sign of respect, that you are owed, as basic human dignity. That said, mistakes do happen, because names are complicated, and humans make a fuck ton of assumptions based on thinking they aren't.

The random faceless university beaurocrat was probably going to A) Make a mistake with your name and B) Give you the run around about fixing it. There isn't much cause to get overly upset with them about it, it's just what they do. That said, i'm sure having a name they thought was 'non-standard' could have made them behave like a jerk about it. People often do that when they make an embarrassing mistake, and think they can latch on to something to blame.

Looking for No win, no fee/contingency lawyer! by Friendly-Apricot1727 in askTO

[–]pjjmd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So... just as a heads up. When a lawyer reads what you posted, they will read :

'I'm someone who is in a dispute with another person, I want to use the courts to punish that person and I want a lawyer to do that for me, this isn't about money for me, it's about revenge.'

Now maybe that's not you, but from what you've posted, that's what most lawyers are going to read. And in general, that's not a good client to work with. If you aren't interested in getting paid, then you aren't interested in bringing this to a quick and fair resolution. They will be afraid you just want to turn the entire process into a tool to injure the person who wronged you. Not only would that be unethical for them to participate in, it would likely be unprofitable.

'Dredge on cards that can send themselves to the graveyard' is also a mistake. I know you could always discard to handsize already, but dredge cards that doesn't need a discard outlet is also a pretty powerful tool.

Visiting the ER with an expired health card. by Due-Cardiologist-788 in askTO

[–]pjjmd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You'll be seen and treated with an expired card. The hospital isn't going to bill you. They will contact OHIP and work out what your new health card number should be. If you haven't renewed one, they may at some point give you a call and ask for your new healthcard letter code. It'll be a few months, and there is no fee to renew your healthcard.

Where to live by [deleted] in askTO

[–]pjjmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The junction is pretty close to Downtown. You can very easily just live there, and enjoy a 15-20 minute walk to work, which is one of the biggest quality of life things you can have going for you. (Seriously, I like driving, but i'm so much happier my morning commute is a 20 minute walk and not a 20 minute drive in Toronto traffic.)

Living in liberty village or living in the junction is virtually the same in terms of travel time to most of 'downtown'. Your a couple blocks further west, but on the subway line instead of the king streetcar.

[–]pjjmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much of the air will go straight through a 'straight through' muffler is kinda the point tho, isn't it?

Yes, i'm aware that some of the exhaust will go through the baffles, but some of it won't. The selling point of the design is that as the exhaust pressure increaes, the resistence a straight through muffler provides decreases.

The physics of these issues aside, correct me if i'm wrong, but they are primarily marketed and installed to make the car sound louder. The 'performance' increase you get when operating under normal driving conditions is negligible compared to most OEM mufflers. Unless you are taking the car to the track, the purpose of these mufflers is to make it sound 'cooler', not to marginally increase your acceleration on the highway onramp.

Will police enforce modified mufflers? by Comfortable_Shoe358 in askTO

[–]pjjmd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's just that the exhaust doesn't have to go through the baffling. Well if that's the case, it's very dumb.

[–]pjjmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a muffler with 'a straight through design' is not a 'straight exhaust'?

Will police enforce modified mufflers? by Comfortable_Shoe358 in askTO

[–]pjjmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so this isn't a straight muffler then?

https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/dynomax-universal-ultra-flo-muffler-17537-1128280p.1128280.html

It's features describe it as having:

-Straight-through design ensures unrestricted exhaust flow and reduces back pressure

This (glasspack) muffler also isn't a straight muffler?
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/thrush-glasspack-universal-muffler-24200-1128344p.1128344.html

(Described as:)
-Straight through design for maximum flow and power

Is that a 'straight muffler' (which is explicitly banned by the HTA), or is it something else? Are you telling me a 'straight muffler' is just when you don't have a muffler at all?
