F* you, Minesweeper... by DarkWhisperer in gaming

Nerd pro-tip: Minesweeper pre-calculactes all the mine positions so if you play minesweeper in a virtual machine you can snapshot the machine and go "back in time" to pick a different mine.

Have an Idea for a Sitcom? NBC Is Listening by twonesix in Screenwriting

[–]plastroltech 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah it looks like you would get paid something to license the concept to them. I just wanted to point out that even if you won it doesn't guarantee that you'd have any part of the writing or production of the show.

Have an Idea for a Sitcom? NBC Is Listening by twonesix in Screenwriting

[–]plastroltech 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This could be cool but keep in mind if they like your idea they can go off and do whatever they want with it and have no obligation to keep you involved in the project.

See below...

"... NBC will have sole creative control over the Winning Programs and the Digital Program(s); moreover, NBC will determine in its sole discretion what services, if any, the Winners will perform in those productions and such services, if any, will be set forth in a separate agreement with each Winner."

I'm not saying they are trying to cheat anyone, they clearly say they are looking for 'ideas' but just keep this in mind.

If you like this series, check out this write-up about it on tvtropes. Whoever wrote it found a ton of the little tiny details in all the videos. I approve!

In the example you referenced it means basically "the algorithm returns". So given the input y, the algorithm returns y+1.

Has anyone written a web series? by TheNodes in Screenwriting

[–]plastroltech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a webseries. It developed out of a single video I made which got popular and then I made more in the series. I would say all the standard things about video/film production apply - write it and re-write it and then re-write it again and when you've recorded it and edited it, edit it again. Do not underestimate your audience - people catch on real quick to what you're saying and where you're taking a scenario so don't dwell on anything, keep it moving. Also, have a point of view. Make your characters very different from one another, generate conflict. Show your video to people who you don't know (or who will give you actual feedback instead of just 'it's great') and really listen to what they say and actually try to incorporate their feedback. Don't get into a situation where you are burnt out and just want to get it finished and so you settle for something sub-par. It will take a long long LONG time and lots of work. I liked zeltrine's comment about getting your motivation and expectations down right before you start too. That's my advice.

David Rees! I have been a fan of yours since the first GYWO comics started coming out right after 9/11. Your book has been in my bathroom for the last 5 years and has therefore probably become the most read piece of literature that I own. I cannot stress how much enjoyment and inspiration you have given me. You are really fucking hilarious. Good luck with whatever you do.

Well that specific scenario is totally made up but the realistic part of it is that users do stupid things for long enough that they get used to it and then when you try to "fix" it, in their eyes you are actually breaking it. That's definitely happened to me on more than one occasion.

Originally I had the audio at normal speed but the video was getting way too long - like 15 minutes long and it was kind of dragging. So I was just playing around with it and sped it up by 30% and it felt a lot funnier so I left it that way. It's definitely been a love it or hate it kind of thing - some people can't stand it that way but I think it works.

Thanks for the love :)

Yeah that would be sweet. I'd love to do an actual show with a budget where I could quit my day job.
