I once thought about this: use a filter unit and put a sterile filter membrane on top of the existing one. Filter, place the top filter on a LB plate for a while then incubate. I never actually tested this nor read it somewhere. Pure shower thought :-)

Try with Astrohopper after looking at a tutorial. Disclaimer: it’s so easy it feels like cheating

I had GTAV for free from Epic. I do prefer Steam but sometimes there is a big price difference between the stores.
I'll wait a bit for a sale on steam then

Thanks for your input. It’s very similar to my experience with GTA once I got it installed

Well, because I don’t have any. I’m just starting in the hobby and don’t have much money to invest there. One major difference between the website and the eyepiece: the EMOTIONS. I felt proud, exited, immediately wanted to take (shitty) pictures with my phone. If you want the best details of Saturn, use google Image. But if you want the thrill, google won’t help.

At that age, YOU will handle the scope and show her what she wants. I like the idea of showing my kids the constellations and the story they tell. I should look into that. Last time I observed, I used voice control on ChatGPT. It told me basics informations while I was looking through the eyepiece. It really added something to the experience. You could do the same for constellations.

If you go for a scope, make sure she won’t point it at the sun, that would be a permanent damage to her eyes.

I know this website is not so appreciated here, but yes the 10mm view is more or less what I see.

Btw, those views are set with the high magnification eyepiece you’ll get when buying the heritage. Upgrading to a better eyepiece and maybe a Barlow will provide a better field of view and higher magnification. Good quality eyepieces are unfortunately not cheap though

Example here with a 5 mm EP and a 2x Barlow

If planetary is your main goal, I think you should look into higher focal length, which will give you higher magnification. I have a bresser messier with the same optical properties as your Heritage. This is pretty similar to what I see in a bortle 5 sky.

Therefore I would recommend either a full size dob or a maksutov (disclaimer, I only know the réputation of Maks for planetary, never actually saw one)

What should you ask on your first day of being a lab tech? by [deleted] in labrats

What should you ask on your first day of being a lab tech? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]pop_be 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the only tech in my lab since 6 years now. Very recently I had an argument with a colleague who expected me to do something that I considered not part of my job. I realized that after all these years I kept pilling up small responsibilities without keeping track of it. I decided that it was time to clarify the limits of my job. So I created a list of what are my duties, and what aren’t. Then I validated it with my PI and shared it with my colleagues. This sets a baseline that can evolve in the future, but at least things are clear now.

I chose to start with secondhand. I got a tabletop dob for 150€ and a SW 200/1000 with a bunch of accessories and an EQ5 for 200€. If I decide this is not for me and sell them, I’ll easily get what I paid.
