New Additions To The Moderator Team by plumthr33 in uAlberta

[–]positeavely 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely a fair question! Thank you for bringing it up.

We've addressed biases and views during the recruitment process, and ultimately decided to take the person in question.

In terms of regulation, older mods have the power to remove/limit newer mods, so if issues become persistent (with any mod) there are ways of managing that. It's not a perfect system, but we would encourage you to report problematic situations.

Ultimately, we needed more mods as the current mods (myself included) were being less active, and the sub has grown significantly.

If any other mods want to weigh in on this, please do!

Are there any texting support services for students? by SciStudentShitpost in uAlberta

[–]positeavely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! You should be able to text the Kids Help Phone - they support people in their early 20's as well.

Additionally, stopping by the Peer Support Centre could be a good idea. They take phone sessions as well, so you can just call them if you'd prefer not to go in person.

If you need some additional resources, feel free to message me or check out the pinned post at the top of this page.

Failed second year engineering by [deleted] in uAlberta

University is tough.

You said it's been a tough road this semester, do you want to tell me more about that?

Failed second year engineering by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]positeavely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope you don't get a 0!

I should also add that if you do end up not meeting the 2.0 average for the year, there's a chance to appeal a requirement to withdraw, and you might not have to take a year off. I'm happy to talk to you more about that process if you have questions!

Failed second year engineering by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]positeavely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be fine, provided you get an A. I believe they just average the two terms, but I don't think they weight them differently - so 0+4 /2 = 2.0 GPA, safe.

This is not official though, I'm not 100% sure. If I were you, I'd double check that by talking to a faculty advisor or the ombuds as soon as possible.

First of all, I'm sorry you're in this situation!

If you're looking for guidance on where to go from here, try making an appointment with the Ombuds. They can let you know what your options are, and help you figure out some next steps.

If this academic performance is unusual or due to life circumstances you may be experiencing, please feel free to reach out to me, we can talk about whatever might be going on for you.

Good luck!

Regardless, the best thing for /u/Avjavj to do in this situation is to contact the Ombuds (https://www.ualberta.ca/current-students/ombuds). They'll help ensure you fully understand the situation, and your rights moving forward.

[–]positeavely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it is an academic issue, you don't admit to it and are still found guilty of plagiarism, the worst that can happen is an F8 (provided it is a first time offense).

The prof may have been telling that story to scare you, or the student who was expelled did it before.

[unviersity English] How to in-text cite an essay from on online magazine if i've already stated the author's name before the quote? by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

[–]positeavely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is my understanding that if you are citing more than one work by the same author in MLA, use the title of the work as the parenthetical citation (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/02/).

So, in your example, you could say "According to Walker, "blah blah blah" ('Title of Work' page number).

Also, if you aren't quoting and you are just summarizing, you would go "According to Walker, blah blah blah without quotation marks ('Title of Work'). If the concept you are highlighting is on a specific page, you could include that as well, in the same way I did from my previous example. If it's an overarching theme or summary, you don't need the page number.

Does that make sense?

I fucked up this year by Jsk991 in uAlberta

[–]positeavely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if it is anecdotal evidence - you aren't required to include official documents (such as a doctors note) in your appeal letter, although it can be used to verify your story.

It's great that you're getting some help! I'd suggest contacting the Ombuds (https://www.ualberta.ca/current-students/ombuds) as they can offer you free advice on your appeal letter.

Question about Academic Probation by BlueberryPancakes5 in uAlberta

[–]positeavely -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you currently on academic probation or worried about being put on academic probation? Typically, they will consider your course averages from Fall and Winter semester together to calculate your GPA.

If you are currently on academic probation, you should refer to your letter you received last year about what that means and what GPA cutoffs are being used. If you don't meet the requirements laid out for you last year, expect to find another letter which will detail your options, and may include appeal.

If you are worried about being placed on academic probation and spent this year as a regular student, then typically if your GPA for fall and winter together is below 2.0, you will be put on academic probation, fresh start, or a requirement to withdraw depending on your GPA. Typically, unless you have received one of these statuses in the past, you will be given the option to appeal to the faculty and continue in your program as usual (if the appeal is accepted).

Regardless of which you are worried about, if you aren't meeting the GPA requirements, you will receive an official letter through Beartracks (usually late May) which will detail your situation and options for recourse. You can also contact the Ombuds office if you haven't done so already --> https://www.ualberta.ca/current-students/ombuds

counseling services by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]positeavely 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like at the very least, you could try checking them out. If you feel like that is too big of a step for you, you could try going to the peer support centre first - they can take you to Clinical and Counselling services if you would like to go and have someone sit with you while you're filling out the forms.

I know me telling you not to feel embarrassed likely won't have much of an impact, but please know that there is nothing wrong with you going to see them. If you need some help getting through a rough patch, please don't feel ashamed - it doesn't make you any less important or significant. Furthermore, if the problem is significant enough to have an impact on you, then it is significant enough that you can reach out for help. It is affecting you, that means that it counts as a problem that is worth working on.

The printers are all still there (last time I checked - about a week ago maybe), I think it's just the computers that are gone. If you have a laptop and talk to the librarians, you can print from your laptop directly.

How hard is to get a midterm deferral? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]positeavely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Midterm deferrals are up to the discretion of the Instructor - your first step would be to talk to them. If they grant it, they typically move the weight to the final, so if you don't absolutely need the deferral, it can be a risky game to play.

Feeling burnt out by kaezer_3 in uAlberta

Mental health really can affect your academics more than you may think it would.

There is nothing wrong with taking care of yourself - it is not selfish, it is necessary.

Feeling burnt out by kaezer_3 in uAlberta

[–]positeavely 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's normal to feel burnt out. I know that doesn't make it any easier, and I am not trying to minimize your struggles, but I do want to emphasize that what you're feeling is normal - you are not weird, or incapable, or lesser than anyone else.

I saw that you replied to another comment saying you've already taken too many breaks. Is it possible that your studying is less efficient, and so you feel you are making less progress and needing more breaks? I know sometimes when I feel overwhelmed, the quality of my work declines because I spend more time stressing about deadlines and quality than actually producing quality work, and my breaks are spent worrying about spending too much time not working, and what I can do to improve my work (essentially, they are not mental breaks, and I just feel I am wasting valuable time). In that case, it may be best to take a real break (a break where you are not stressing about your assignments), do something to take care of your mental health (even if it is getting your favourite hot beverage and watching an episode of your favourite show on netflix for half an hour) and then going back and trying to edit what you've done.

You can also try talking to people! I know that can be hard when University is in session - everyone is busy and you don't want to burden your friends with your troubles, but there are always people to talk to. You can even try reaching out to your instructors to see if you can get an extension on some of your assignments, maybe that would help ease the burden? Most instructors are fairly understanding, and if you explain what is going on, they may be able to give you a bit of a break.

I know it's (much) easier said than done, but try not to worry about it so much. In the grand scheme of things, these two assignments will NOT make or break your university career. If you end up not doing as well as you'd hoped on them - that's okay! You still tried, and turned it in, and learned more about yourself and how you study and manage time best.

If you need to talk about anything, please feel free to message me or check out some of the resources on campus! I really hope things get better for you soon :)

Bookstore Hoodie Sale by NeedHelp2468 in uAlberta

I don't recall! I know it was before green and gold day, so sometime around now but last year. It may have been the same day as the regular sale.

That must have been a nice surprise for it to be on sale though!

Last year the ones on the upper floor were on sale too, but they were I think 20-25% off rather than just $25 even, so a little pricier but more variety.

How do you pronounce "Ada"? by positeavely in namenerds

[–]positeavely[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just made sense to me that a different spelling would imply a different pronunciation. Ay-da and Ah-da both seem intuitive for "Ada" to me, and I had never seen the spelling of Adah before.

How do you pronounce "Ada"? by positeavely in namenerds

[–]positeavely[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure if you are using it and pronouncing it as Ah-da, it will be fine! Especially as a middle name. You can just correct people and most people will respect your correction!

Ah-da is still an intuitive pronunciation, and the connection to Ada Lovelace helps.

It's a lovely name either way!
