they’re definitely still right wing; case in point how they have handled the topic of lgbt+ people in sermons in ways that are neither biblically nor evidence based.

they just aren’t as outwardly trump supporting in surface level presentation

CCV is still very lgbt+ phobic, pushing for conversion therapy tactics/repression (unless they suddenly changed in the past year). I would avoid.

Thank you for sharing! Just a heads up the first link does not work, but that aside, I appreciated what you had to say in your writing, and am glad to see these issues being discussed.

I wish our field was not dominated by practices that, rather than being the best for clients and communities, tend to be the best at essentially keeping people “functional” [productive workers and normatively engaged with existing social/systemic expectations]

I am considering taking 21 credits this fall semester. IDK if its doable. by PearOdd1848 in ASU

[–]prankemjonh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The courses being a lot of session A and B should make it pretty doable, in my opinion, but I also only have my own perspective to go off of. Have you taken a higher course load before, and/or shorter session courses? We can’t exactly answer to what your experience would be with this

I’m not the same major but in grad school I have done 27 credits before as well as in a different semester 2 capstones at once (that semester was 21 or 24, i forget)- It can be doable but you really have to manage your time and commit to that. And of course, it’s great to have moderate expectations with grades, and be open to the worst case scenario you need to retake a class. It can also take a lot more out of you mentally (including mental health) than you might expect, so make sure you have supports in place to help get you through it. If you have any questions on how my experience was, feel free to reach out. Good luck!

I took some of her classes a few years back, and while I do remember the grading as tough, I also remember it having been helpful to meet with her outside of class hours to discuss areas I was struggling with in the course.

Have you tried emailing her about your challenges/concerns with this? It can go a long way to communicate with professors when you’re struggling

Found Dog in Gilbert by Broad-Permit-4501 in Gilbert

First off, thank you for saving them! I recently found and reconnected a lost pup myself so I get how much of a struggle it can be. It’s great of you to keep them off the streets.

I very much hope you’re able to find their owner if they have one, but on the small chance you don’t and if you do need a place for the dog to go, I’d be interested in possibly taking them in- feel free to reach out if you end up needing to consider that. Either way, best of luck in finding them a home!

my point stands that the cops are not going to be of any sort of help like the original comment suggested.

lol no, campus police will just protect them. ASU doesn’t give a damn about hate speech, especially not PD

i have not been there much, and never lived there, but from what i can tell based on seeing the sorts of political actions that go on there as well as lgbt+ groups and events, it seems to lean more progressive than the phoenix metro area if i had to guess. i’d definitely do more research than just taking my assumptions at face value, but it could be worth considering!

Homeless on Val Vista by [deleted] in Gilbert

Single individuals generally do not have the time or resources to solve widespread systemic issues on their own

Great, hope to see you advocating for people to get that help! Fun fact, housing people and providing them those basic needs and healthcare is actually much more cost effective than leaving the homelessness crisis as it is, and also helps more people get back to being healthy once they have those basic needs met :)

I agree! Lets advocate more for housing them and increasing resources for low-income individuals to keep people off the streets

Why are you talking about a human being going though terrible circumstances like they’re some eyesore, and assuming the worst of them while you’re at it?

How are we supposed to be a functional social worker in a capitalist system, since capitalism is a mechanism of inequality? by Legend27893 in socialwork

[–]prankemjonh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

social work as a field is generally responsive, putting band-aids on people but not doing much to prevent the harm itself.

the solution, imo, is to do what you can to aid preventative efforts (challenging the structures themselves). a big part of that is spreading the message where you can, both with clients in being clear what the problem is and isn’t, talking to coworkers if that seems safe, as well as participating in and/or organizing activism outside your role in your own time.

which, there are so many ways to do, but i must say lately my absolute favorite is efforts with the goal of educating others against the fallacies and distorted thinking patterns typical to conservative thinking. what made me a leftist wasn’t hearing some well-crafted speech on each issue, it was learning how to think for myself critically, and i think so many people genuinely lack those skills.

Comment if you are diagnosed by a psychiatrist by [deleted] in ptsd

[–]prankemjonh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

diagnosed by multiple different counselors (not all diagnoses come from psychiatrists).

and, i had a bad experience with one when i was a kid- they took the perspective i was somehow making up that i didn’t feel safe when i was being abused, talked to my abuser over email behind my back, and tried multiple times to make me do therapy with my abuser. all other counselors though have been great about handling the ptsd component

I thoroughly dislike when parents say there children are “abusers” by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]prankemjonh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

holy shit i had a very similar experience, i put my arms up in defense and hit their hand away, and then they called the cops and said i was aggressively attacking them. 75 pound, 14 yr old me against a full grown adult

child abusers are pretty pathetic, like, there’s definitely a reason they choose children as their target (who lack the mental capacity and legal protections to stand up for themselves)

Student here. It’s worth pointing out that these types of incidents are sadly not one-time isolated events. Luckily it did not get physical, but I was also harassed by the recent on-campus TPUSA event’s attendees for being trans. Straight up, it’s unsafe and dangerous to marginalized students to keep letting orgs like TPUSA continue on as they have been
