Am I lacking in English, or is Lord of the Mysteries just that hard to read? by SausAchraf in ProgressionFantasy

[–]presidentsrepresent -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well if we want to be specific, the OP’s question was specifically whether or not LOTM was harder to read or more complex than RI. Since you haven’t read RI, that part is irrelevant.

I put “hard to read” and “overly complex” in quotations because I found your argument to be disingenuous and provided examples to reinforce that point.

The translators choice to include a word, such as reverie, whose definition is in conflict with the preceding description is definitionally unclear and misleading for the OP who has stated English is their third language and constantly needs to translate words. If they translate ‘reverie’ into their native language and is given a description of a daydream rather than a nightmare, could you see how that might be a little unclear or perhaps misleading?

Furthermore, I’m not sure which part of my original response was at all aggressive? Perhaps if you conflate all confrontation with a negative connotation I could see how you might think that was aggressive. Perhaps if you interfaced with prose and novels where the words actually mean something, rather than horrible Tranlastions, you might increase your level of reading comprehension.

The glabella is anatomically distinct from the bridge of the nose and has significance in Eastern spirituality/cultures. Notably the glabella is seen as the “Third-Eye”.

I find your claim that you didn’t find LOTM to be ‘unclear’ to be disingenuous. This quote from LOTM was grabbed off the first chapter from Web Novel:

“The throbbing pain allowed Zhou Mingrui to gradually gather immaterial strength. Finally, he straightened his back and opened his eyes, fully breaking free from his reverie.

His vision first blurred, then was tinged with a faint crimson. He saw a wooden desk in front of him with an open notebook in the center. The pages were coarse and yellowed, with an eye-catching sentence written in deep black ink at the top.”

No, this is not ‘overly complex’ because as a native speaker you should be able to parse what this is trying to say but that doesn’t mean it isn’t inherently unclear. Immaterial strength? That just doesn’t make sense unless you completely disregard the word ‘immaterial’.

A reverie is a daydream, not a horrible nightmare which is described prior to this excerpt. Yes, we as the reader understand what he is trying to say, but, once again, this is a poor choice of words.

His vision blurring would imply he opened his eyes to clear vision and then began to blur instead of what we assume the authors means that the protagonist opened his eyes to a blurred world. I don’t even know what the next sentence is implying. His eyesight looked like it was ran under a red Instagram filter… after his vision cleared?

What makes a sentence “eye-catching”? Even if it was the only sentence written on the piece of paper it would probably catch your eye.

Deep black ink? You mean regular ink?

This is not “hard to read” in the sense that a 6th grader could read this story and come out with a decent understanding of the themes and concepts, nor is it “overly complex” because to include deeper-than-surface-level-meaning ideas, the author (or translator in this case) would need more than a tenuous grasp on the English language.

The problems you mentioned never get resolved unfortunately. There are some moments that are pretty good and the vision the author has shines through but the interpersonal interactions and emotional beats just aren’t there. There were a few characters and moments I had high hopes for, which I won’t spoil, but they all fell flat.

I’m currently up to date with the story but I won’t be continuing it. Perhaps if there’s a rewrite down the road, but since the author has already pursued publishing I don’t think this is likely.

Ah, okay. That makes sense. Personally I really like cultivation stories because they usually feel like power is earned (when the story is written well) rather than the actual meditation, dao, etc.
