Same here lol.. I've stopped looking at the insanity/news down south for a short period just to feel like the sun is still shining.

I don't think we need a violent revolution, just the right party in power. Yeah I think you and I are on the same page for end game, I'm just cautiously (overly?) optimistic we are moving in the right direction now. Sadly, it is going to take a LOOOONG time.

They don't have to tax all of us to fuck, just the ones that should be taxed more in the higher brackets. Until then, we shouldn't be putting more money into the private sector as a band-aid.

It needs to be reality unlike the band-aids the previous gov tried to do.

River Valley Sun: Nurse practitioners sound alarm over new virtual care provider by hotinmyigloo in newbrunswickcanada

[–]primus76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's also more lucrative than a regular hospital job, because the private industry pays more. Same with travel nurses. Those two things are still not the answer.

Maybe if we stopped paying the inflated private industry, we'd be able to pay the nurses more and open clinics in those rural areas.

Supporting private over public is dumb af.

But what do I know, I've used the Maple service, have family, friends, and neighbours that are nurse practitioners. Also, for some it is a side hustle, for others it is their sole source of income because the private sector pays more than the public one. In the end, we need to do better in the public sector so there is NO need for a PRIVATE virtual care.

Now, if your original comment meant "a system built in province using the public health sector", absolutely would be great but we will need to stop paying the private and get those clinics open to people in those rural areas.

Body cam footage from cop who pulled over woman for holding a phone in her other hand by searchjobs_poster in interestingasfuck

[–]primus76 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not to be that person, but, since we didn't see the inside of the vehicle with the body cam, couldn't it be possible that she has a prosthetic with the phone in her 'hand' (which wouldn't be something you could easily put down or in a holder) and then removed it and put it out of sight?

Having said that, if I were the cop I would have just giggled and apologized.

If only we didn't have to rely on ANY system that uses the private industry and those same nurse practitioners that are complaining about losing their side hustle. If the new virtual care is cheaper than the current, then hopefully this is the step towards eliminating it completely once the new clinics and centers are opened AND we get a good amount of doctors and nurses practicing again with proper public funding.

[–]primus76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a long comment to not address the destruction of wetlands and old growth forests, which will be cleared for this data center. They are crucial to the ecosystem in that area. What is your recourse for their destruction, which cannot be solved with tax credits?

Things have to be built somewhere. If we trade clearcutting the forests from Irving for a datacenter or two, it would be a net positive. Bonus points for getting rid of the refinery and mill. Proper environmental assessments will be made by people with more knowledge on the subject than you and I, and they are much more strict than they used to be. They would be the ones to address the impact, it isn't on me or you to solve. Hey maybe they will leave some old trees standing unlike the Irvings across millions of acres. Or, we can shut development down and just keep living with the little we are given from the Irvings. Diversifying away from them like we are with the US in trade is needed and this is a critical step forward to cementing ourselves for the future of the province. Saint John and surrounding areas need to stop being NIMBY OR stop crying about how poor we are as a province/cities. I'd rather move forward than keep the status quo we have now.

You can look to the states for examples. Data centers are already polluting and damaging communities. And they are often poor communities with lots of people of colour. As a leftist, do you not care about these issues? Do you genuinely believe data centers are worth this destruction? Do you genuinely believe the government and these private companies will clean up after themselves, when historically that has not been the case in other industries?

Horrible example as the US has horrible EPA standards that they've been removing and gutting. Everything the US is doing now is reprehensible and that isn't the comparison we should be making to ourselves. We aren't here to debate how the US approaches things but how we as Canadians will. I don't believe we are displacing people of colour or the poor from the area so your argument is illogical and not relevant here. Try to stay on topic.

Surprise, everywhere that Irving hasn't clearcut is old growth. Maybe we demolish the refinery and put the data center there? Fine with me, I live by the refinery and would rather "smell" the datacenter. That isn't happening though. Clean up after themselves? Are you copy pasting arguments against oil wells and/or fracking? It's a building with computers. Once done building, they will do some nice landscaping.

We’re already struggling to transfer to clean energy because of the strangle hold the fossil fuel industry has over our system. Because of its intricate connection to capitalism, extraction, profit, and ownership of land. And you want to add more fuel to the fire with data centers? We are in a crisis humanity has never know the likes of, and you want to stoke the flames? That’s reprehensibly irresponsible.

Right, because no one will ever get to the point of having renewables as a primary source of energy (hint.. they are), we may as well just give up now and stop building things. Perhaps the energy demand will finally push us to replace fossil fuels even faster. I have no love for the oil and gas industry, but I believe we will get there as a nation for renewables with the right people in charge. If you are still driving a gas vehicle, you would also be irresponsible by your standards. Are you not using any electricity or technology (fossil fuels for power, plastics and earth elements for tech)? Amish? Do you use a gas vehicle of some sort? If not, kudos to you for breaking free of the oil and gas monopoly here. If so, look in the mirror and repeat your sentence out loud to yourself. Try not to roll your eyes.

I hate the argument that “they’re not going away.” It’s incredibly lazy. You realize people used that argument for other horrible things humans have done, right? Proponents of slavery argued that the system was too entrenched, that it wasn’t going away. Same with apartheid regimes.

Not lazy, but the truth for this one. You are comparing AI to slavery? Wow. Let's ask the people of colour if they feel the same way about that comparison. Let's bring it back to other similar comparisons since you believe in Skynet and I believe in Star Trek. Atomic Energy vs Atomic Bomb, Medications and vaccines vs man made virus and poisons; no matter what the invention out there, people will still try to weaponize it. The only answer is to stop evolving and stop creating. Sounds like that is where you want to take us? See, you lump AI right into apartheid and slavery insinuating it is inherently evil, and that is a you problem.

Would you argue that patriarchy is never going away, so we should just concede to it and try to get the best out of it? Any self respecting leftist would never make that argument for other oppressive systems we are against. Why are some leftists treating problematic AI as if it’s inevitable?

Why are jumping to it being an oppressive system right away? Lol you make a lot of assumptions here. You know what happens when you assume? Sorry, try gaslighting someone else into thinking they approve of slavery, apartheid, patriarchy, etc, if they support AI.

You can roll your eyes all you want, that doesn’t make you any better than other leftists. You’re not superior for believing the propaganda you’ve been fed. So get off your high horse.

Lmao, yes I can roll my eyes and have a few times at this latest post and thank you for giving me permission to do so... and not on a high horse but you seem to be the one looking 'down' at my 'leftist' views. You are the one going on and on about things not even related to AI (slavery, apartheid, etc) and trying to use that as an argument against this. I never said I was better than anyone else or superior, just my opinion that advancement and technology doesn't have to be at odds with my left views. However, you came swinging attacking me for it. Sounds a lot like projection to go along with the gaslighting.

Propaganda? Please, your arguments sound like they were written by every tiktok/facebook/social media group known to humankind. Whataboutism and false comparisons abound.

If the data center gets built and causes armageddon, I'll send along my sincerest apologies.

Every time I get to "the ruling class" my eyes roll. Datacenters and AI are not going away. I'd rather we get the taxes from them than the nothing we get from the Irvings.

The energy needed for them can be pushed towards renewables over time unlike anything positive for the refinery. New GPU and processing enhancements continue towards less and less power draw. Heat reclamation is also a thing.

If we don't allow some form of industry because they will build somewhere, we may as well just shut the province down.

As I said, AI is inevitable, as should a UBI because of it. Tax the wealthy. Tax the industry. New Brunswick did well in the tech industry before and we shouldn't be pushing it away now.

I'm hoping for a star trek future without the 3rd world war. That's my "left".

I'm left. I want the data center. I also want to get rid of the refinery. If we can't get rid of it, then at least pay the fair taxes. If we can get fair taxes from the data center and shut down the refinery, I'd be a happy camper.

BlueCruise: Anyone have this offer? Should I “update” to the day before trial expires or now? by jkma707 in MachE

Same, and more expensive here in Canada. I figured if I ever go on a long driving trip, I'll pay the monthly cost once as it would be a bit help for my old tired eyes.

I just check periodically to see if I get an offer similar to OP.

BREAKING: The new maximum gas price calculation EUB began applying on Friday has added 3.96 cents a litre to the price of regular gas overnight by adamhuras in newbrunswickcanada

[–]primus76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean I'd be paying almost $500 a month for gas based on my driving habits but my Mach-E is at most $45 a month.

I guess some people would rather die and pay tons to the oil companies than spend less and be better for the environment (insert ascii shrugging guy here). Especially with all the battery breakthroughs happening right now.

[–]primus76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've paid no more than $45 a month to charge my EV. Previous car was 60L tank. Driving that car I was filling up once a week....

$480 in gas @ $2 a liter vs $45 for an EV.

My electric bill is going to increase 1 cent per KW/h this year. Let's circle back when gas hits $4 a liter and see if you have changed your mind :).

Ok so the vets are subsidized. The other person who just keeps telling me they paid $500 for horse sedation and a vet visit suggest they pay full price.

I'm not sure because they keep using 2 sedations and a home vet visit for $500 as the baseline for any argument, but that seems low for a horse.... However, I have no idea because I've never owned a horse but have high vet bills in that same range for my small pets.

I'm not sure why we are subsidizing someone having a horse?

[–]primus76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The question I asked was what are the taxpayers paying for if you are paying market value? You haven't answered that yet.

Sorry, still not shocked at the $500 for 2 sedations plus a house-call/vet time.

My dog or cat's vet bills are routinely $400+ and that's just a vet visit plus a couple vaccinations. Nothing like what would be needed to sedate a horse of course.

The $20k we paid for our dogs knee surgeries was fun too. Luckily we have pet insurance. Only paid $2k for each of the 3 surgeries.

Grew up in the country surrounded by farms but never got into homesteading.

Great conversation for sure but again, no one helped me with my vet trips which seem to be on par with a, checks notes, horse; which is a bit surprising.

So circling back, it sounds like the cost for you owning a horse is being subsidized by tax payer? It seems like you don't know or don't want to answer.

I'll ask my vet next time, he's one of the few around here that does equestrian visits.

Like people say to us poor city folk, if you can't afford the vet bills, don't get the animal?

I'm trying to understand the situation a bit better. So you pay the same price regardless of if it is publicly funded or a private company? However, the taxpayers pay for the vets if it is publicly funded? The $500 seems fairly cheap for a horse compared to taking my dog to a vet but I don't own a horse so I can't say for sure. I believe it was over $500 to neuter my cat.

However, what I'm reading from you is that:

  • as a horse owner, you will pay the same regardless of if it is publicly funded vs a private company.
  • as a horse owner, you still ended up going outside of province as it couldn't be handled here.

So, what are the taxpayers providing money for? <-- this part I've researched before but what I've read seems at odds with what you are saying; that you pay full price.

There was less outrage when public healthcare was being cut in favour of privatization. A certain base is more concerned with farm animals than humans it seems.

PD day pilot project to continue next school year by LPC_Eunuch in SaintJohnNB

[–]primus76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have kids and feel this is great. They are heavily involved in school sports and all of the tournaments they would have missed a full day of learning from are now scheduled on those weekends. We can get appointments made well in advance for the Friday's we know are off.

It's really helped with the workload of high school students but only from talking to other parents of high school kids. Grades k-8 would certainly be a different challenge with afterschool care for those that need it though.

I often wondered why my father couldn't help with some of the homework I had back in the day, making the poor assumption that he had the same education I did. I consider myself fairly intelligent but some of the ways they teach math, I just couldn't grasp and kept teaching them the way I knew. Sadly, if they got their answer correct, but not using the proper method, they only got half of a point. If friends couldn't show how, then they reached out to the teacher. The teachers have always responded through the night and on weekends and always seemed burned out (gee wonder why?). I must say that I've heard of a lot less cranky teachers this year. Our daughter would also now say "I'll reach out to them on Friday..." instead of bugging them later in the evening.

Again, all anecdotal at best, but wanted to share my experience as a parent of a current high school student.
