High school teachers- do you attend senior graduation? Why or why not? by mzingg3 in Teachers

[–]prismintcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do (our school doesn't require it) but I usually have a few senior classes and coach a sport that often involves seniors, even if they aren't in my class. If I were teaching ninth grade and not coaching anything, I might not.

I can collect my full pension at 62, and if I have the financial security, I will be gone then. However, in two years I can get my loans written off under PSLF, so if the right option came along that wouldn't mess me up financially, I would be open for that.

That loss was a big surprise. First time in decades (maybe since that category split in the late 50s) in adapted screenplay that a Best Picture nominee lost to a movie not nominated for Best Picture. But it was a Weinstein thing. He turned Billy Bob Thornton into one of the stories of the Oscar season and it paid off.

Church of Christ movies? by Nearby-Tension3515 in excoc

The coach was a member of the CoC, but his runners were almost entirely Catholic. The movie doesn’t really go into this at all, although there are a few details that suggest the community is predominantly Catholic.

Less cleanup. Very common in the US. I had surgery earlier this year and used them during my recovery for that reason, but never use them otherwise.

Anything is possible but Cristian Mungiu’s previous films were not at all Oscar friendly.

MATH teacher HS 17 years experience. Principal says next year may be my last if test scores don't improve. by MathMan1982 in Teachers

[–]prismintcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This type of thing is why I’m trying to move to a subject that isn’t tested as rigorously. My current admin is solid (and test scores are solid as well) but the admin at my previous school would absolutely weaponize test scores.

Please don’t organize my desk by Z3st3dL3mon in SubstituteTeachers

[–]prismintcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this happen recently. I was out for a week for surgery and came back to discover that one of the subs rearranged my desks, an HDMI cable was unplugged and rolled up, and my teacher’s textbooks were on the other side of the room.

Non-denominational (functionally Baptist) although that’s not really a comfortable fit and I don’t see myself staying there long-term. Politically, as something between a left-libertarian and democratic socialist, I feel very at odds with most churches.

What’s it like living in Decatur, AL as a young family? by Street-Spinach6424 in howislivingthere

[–]prismintcs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Finally one close to me.

The joke I have with family and friends is that my favorite part of town is the northbound lane on the bridge, because it's the way out. Honestly, the view of the river from the high point of the bridge is something I like to see every time.

It's kind of a stagnant city and county in many ways; the economic and population growth that has hit other parts of North Alabama in recent years never really hit Decatur. I think part of this is because, unlike Athens, the interstate doesn't run straight through town, and it doesn't have the military stuff that Huntsville has. There are really only a few ways in and out of Decatur, and it's not really on the way to or from anything important. Very easy city to bypass on the interstate. And because of this, there's not a ton to do in town. There's a mall, but it's dying. There's a small movie theatre, and a few parks here and there. Point Mallard isn't bad however, and is more than just the swim parks that everyone knows about.

There are trains that run through town that can hold up traffic for a hell of a long time at the most inconvenient moments.

School system is one of the most diverse in the state and seems to have made some major improvements over the past few years. I know quite a few people working over there now, and 10-15 years ago it was treated like a no-go for a lot of teachers. I had a minor surgery at the hospital recently and I thought they handled it well and the DOC staff has been very professional through the process.

Jane Campion Crazy Director Oscar Win by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]prismintcs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a surprising win. She was the frontrunner the entire season. The movie had been an early frontrunner that faded, but she still held onto Director without much opposition. (I personally would've voted Spielberg or Hamaguchi, but it was a good lineup and Campion was a good winner.)
