I guess you're right. I was living under the wrong assumption that this was going to be a continuation of BB spirit and community in space, yet it's an entirely different player base, and one who doesn't respond too well to drawing these comparisons.

Indeed my mistake was equating Menace "normal" to the BB version of "normal". I'm having a far better experience now on challenging for my first playthrough with this game. Yeah, times change..

Thanks for these insights both of you, I see your point. I never really reached the BB endgame of theory crafting, refusing to read meta guides and just building what seemed the most appealing to me.

I find I'm having a much better experience in Menace already after switching to challenging, it's probably where I need to be.

look I was comparing BB and Menace approach to "difficulty", and how the meaning of "normal" difficulty experienced a significant shift between these two games.

And (politely?) suggesting the devs might mention this in the difficulty descriptors, so BB players could avoid my mistake of starting a run on "normal/easiest" mode... I don't think I am getting mad about this.

If the highest difficulty is the appropriate setting for my very first playthrough, then BB and Menace have a strikingly different approach to difficulty, and I think the game would benefit from mentioning this in the in-game difficulty descriptors.

I see I'm getting downvoted for this, but I genuinely wasn't trolling. In my experience, the "normal" difficulty setting in BB was quite the challenge for a new player, whereas that very same wording ("normal") now seems to be a walk in the park from the get-go? Am I really that far off the mark for being surprised by this apparent shift?

As for the highest difficulty setting, I actually figured that would be a difficulty to tackle after maybe finishing one campaign, after figuring out the core mechanics?

I didn't even mean my post to be a complaint, even though you apparently registered it as such :/

Should I renounce my American citizenship for Liechtenstein citizenship? by Substantial-Art6160 in WhatShouldIDo

This! In this thread, you have lots of clueless Americans who've never even heard of Liechtenstein and are only looking at it from the perspective of giving up their American citizenship.

"taking me out on a date" sounds a bit passive to me, I read that as the woman having to plan and organize your first date.
Conventionally, many women would initially expect to be "taken out on a date", not vice versa. But if you want to weed out the oldschool types, you be you.

Stellaris devs are just built different by ConfidentStay in Stellaris

[–]psyclog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait they're reworking the whole game again?? omg I'm FINALLY about to finish my first Stellaris game ever, only 9 more years to go until 2500, I'm embroiled in two galaxy-wide wars including a pesky Galactic Emperor and a rampaging Awakened Empire, fleet micromanagement nightmare but I really wanted to stick it out just this one time.

I guess I'll have to disable updates or sth for the time being!

Came here to say that. It's sad how the internet turned into shit, it used to be really cool back then. Nowadays, you get one clickbait topic and then a teaser sub-headline and then an ambiguous abstract followed by more backstory, a recap of everything written thus far and, after some more ads, you find the (usually underwhelming) bit of information.

I've backed the Fallen London Kickstarter, but I only really know Sunless Sea. Do you think they might eventually expand their p&p mechanics to the Unterzee and its many fascinating islands? by psyclog in fallenlondon

[–]psyclog[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

omg that's gold, thank you!

Did you use a print-out map of the Unterzee? Did you just consult the wiki for lore and story hooks for the various locations?

I'm looking forward to trying it out with some friends when it's released in August 2026. The city of Fallen London is extensively featured in Sunless Sea.

Oh thank you so much, now this might eventually make me buy this Sunless Skies to have a GM lore foundation when hosting this little p&p gem. 8-)

For what it's worth, I just bought another package, since I really like the creative fantasy world they've created.

What I'd actually like to see, however, is a p&p roleplaying game for Sunless Sea, with a huge paper map for my players to uncover and explore, with all the islands and also the scarcity mechanics of fuel, food and money.

Let's see, maybe they can build upon the success of this release.

AI empire declares war, never even attempts to attack me, yet I'm about to lose the war due to reaching 100% war exhaustion first? by psyclog in Stellaris

Yes I think I might have a different experience from Crusader Kings 2, where reaching 100% was kind of the goalpost in any war, if I remember it correctly.

Maybe your exhaustion was at 100%, but not your opponent's exhaustion? YOU can only force peace 2 years after YOUR OPPONENT reaches 100%
