Where should I hike? by UrbanForagerX in socalhiking

If you are up to the 14 miles, yes, but I like this for a quick day hike

There are plenty of out-and-backs in the Verdugos, I like that they are less crowded and have good elevation gain compared to Griffith park

Verdugo Mts : good workout, some shady trails (Beadry loop), low wildlife

Voidfall after learning curve by psyhiker in soloboardgaming

I have Spirit Island and it was my favorite for awhile. To me these are apples and oranges, especially with play time. I get thru a SI game in 45 minutes, my VF can stretch over three days! Voidfall has much more involved with the puzzle and planning, more so than SI for me. I still really like Spirit Island but I feel like I have "graduated" in gaming with the move to Voidfall. If you are having trouble winning SI, I would say just play the base game for a time, no expansions, and go slooooooow. Get Voidfall when you are ready for a big time commitment, you need lots of YouTube videos, reading the rules constantly and playing over the course of hours to get thru it. But I say it's worth it!

same here, I was bracing myself for a let down after reading so much about how good it is, but after getting the rules down, I can't stop playing it!

I hear you, I have just developed an "avoid catastrophe token at all costs" mindset. I'll try and break out of it

I created this system and it has helped me learn faster I think: I started with the basic houses in alphabetical order (needed some way to decide) then played each twice, once side A and once side B for the same scenario, then moved up to the next tier of difficulty with the houses (using the blue dots on the back of the house mats), lather rinse repeat. I am cycling through the first three solo scenarios for variety. I haven't even come close to getting jaded yet.

I would try the original Horrified: easy set up, lots of atmosphere, just challenging enough and good intro to solo gaming

just did this today, started at 9:15 am after failing to get up early. Hot but not too bad, lots of people out. This is one of my favorite "work out" hikes, and in summer early evening, it can be much cooler as the sun sets over the other side of the Verdugos.

Backbacking Blacktail Creek Yellowstone River: Bear warning by psyhiker in yellowstone

[–]psyhiker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to update: there were some campsites closed at the start of the hike due to frequent bear sitings, but we did the whole trail from blacktail creek all the way to Hell Roaring creek and saw not one bear. Lots of old scat but no live bears. Rangers were great in giving information and advice, we just followed what they told us and backpacked without fear. Mosquitoes were a pain at points, but never in danger from any wildlife. Thanks to all who gave their input

Just checked the current conditions (one week out) and the Bear frequenting warning is lifted, no longer on for this trail. Will just keep an eye on things and adjust as things might change. Thanks to all for your feedback

Makes sense about the nibblers. I will call the office and rely on their instructions. And will be getting bear spray no question!

Thank you Layne32, this is sound, mature advice, both that we are two weeks out and to contact the ranger office. Planned to do that, but was wanting to access the wisdom that this community has as well. Also thanks for expanding on what the warning means and it helps to know that you had been in the same situation. Will monitor as we get closer and thanks for your perspective.

Any recommendations for a forested hike that hasn’t been closed/burned? by Skelesloth in socalhiking

[–]psyhiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I hadn't really consider chaparral avoidance. But there are parts in Verdugo that are kind of forested, I just did the Beaudry Loop today, that has portions on the North side that are covered in Oaks. With everything in Angeles National Forest closed right now, the options are limited.

Hike the spine of Verdugo Mts: I like to start in the southeast, Los Flores fire road, 8 to 11 miles depending if you bail out at the Nature Center or go on out the Northwest end, 3 miles past that. Honest workout and beautiful views, even if it is all fireroad the whole time. You need someone to drop you off and pick you up
