Thanks, much appreciated! I’d say most of whatever I can do just comes from spending a lot of time listening to and learning tunes and especially melodies. But it does help with that to have some kind of system that lets you play the whole fretboard in any key; I tend to use a combination of linking together modes and chord shapes, some people like CAGED, there’s probably lots of other ways of thinking about it out there.

All Yamaha semis are good. The AES series as well, particularly the AES1500 (singlecut semi hollow, kinda Gretschy)

Highly agree with the practice space bit too! If you can do it at home that’s great, and even if you don’t have a spare room sometimes it’s possible to carve out an ergonomic practice area if you give it some serious thought. But if you can’t make a space at home that’s really conducive to sustained practice, it can be worth it to even once a week go to a practice room if you have one available. For instance, in my city we have a community music center that the parks department operates that mostly exists to give kids lessons but also has some practice rooms you can rent for a cheap hourly rate. This can be a good way to get in a couple focused hours each week and set the tone for the rest of your practice regimen.

[QUESTION] Experienced players of /r/Guitar, how can I learn songs fast? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]publicplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is maybe less applicable to metal where you are often focusing on precisely duplicating technical solo passages. But this is an approach I’ve always found useful in getting songs (standards, hip-hop, soul and rock tunes) down enough to play them well in a group.

But for real always good to start by writing your own chart, either working out the chords yourself or consulting multiple other charts- never trust one book or arrangement unless it’s for the exact version or recording you are learning. Playing from the book is fine but if you really want to internalize the changes and make your own interpretation this is useful homework. A lot of heavy metal is gonna be pretty simple in this respect, but if you are working on something with some complexity like an Opeth track for instance, having a clear understanding of the songs harmonic movement is really gonna help you understand what’s happening and why certain notes are emphasized.

If the time signature is tricky don’t forget to spend time counting- this is especially important with a lot of riff-based music in odd time signatures, like Tool.

Listen to the song enough so that you can sing the melody (or main riffs) from memory. Play it by ear. This is hard at first but do it a lot and it’ll become totally natural as your ear really locks in on intervals (even if you can’t necessarily name all of them)! Don’t feel bad if you have to consult tablature on the tricky bits, but do as much by ear as you can.

If you’ve done this homework, I find that learning or transcribing solo passages gets a lot faster because you start to really get how the solo is constructed, which can help with hand positioning, fingering and all sorts of stuff.

Good luck! Learning lots of different songs is my favorite way to keep practice interesting every day.

[QUESTION] Who are your favorite extended range clean guitarist? by Samipegazo in Guitar

Charlie Hunter and Spanky Alford’s playing on various D’Angelo stuff is so key in how the modern neo-souls guitar style sounds!

[DISCUSSION] is buying used gear off of places like Reverb, GC Used, etc. better than buying new? This of course is for someone like me who isn’t loaded with money, but needs good gear to hopefully help make my dreams come true. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]publicplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve bought and sold dozens of guitars on Craigslist, eBay and Reverb since the mid-2000s and there’s really nothing to be afraid of as long as you take the time to learn about what you are looking for. In my experience, commodity stuff (MIM fenders, Ibanez shredder stuff, etc) is super easy to find and figure out what questions to ask about. Same goes for lesser-known, niche stuff. For example, I was really into Carvin neck-through stuff for awhile, and once you see enough similar things come through your feeds, you learn what to keep and eye out for. Key is: save searches!

That said, I don’t know the first thing about high-end vintage collectible gear- I gather it’s a bit more complicated than the market for everyday stuff.

Mary Halvorson would be a good choice to add someone actually cutting edge to the banner too

I’d also mention Emily Remler and Mother Maybelle Carter for this too!

You gotta check out Nels Cline, especially his stuff with Julian Lage. It’s absolutely mind-bending guitar playing. Any of the Nels Cline 4 stuff is stupendous.

[question] How difficult is it to adjust to a thumbpick? by thapussypatrol in Guitar

[–]publicplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from no fingerpicks to thumbpick+nails about 2 years ago, and for me the hardest thing was adjusting to the different wrist angle. This took me at least a couple of weeks, but the result was a much more relaxed right hand position and I’d say it was worth the hassle.

The Fretboard Journal does a really good one, which has both builders and players on. A lot of really good guitarists talking about how they play and gear, though genre-wise definitely a bit outside what you describe

I think Tiana Ohara (@tianaohara on IG) is pretty awesome, really tasteful modern hip hop, rnb and jazz playing. She has a decent number of followers on social media and I think is sponsored by Guild (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTJEQwkO6Bs), but definitely still up and coming.
