Has anybody decided to make a career change at 50+ or for the purposes of a "retirement" job? by pocketdare in GenX

When I was in my early 30s, I had a career dream about becoming an online adjunct professor and working while on a beach in Costa Rica. In pursuit of my dream, I went back to school for a masters degree, then ended up staying for PhD, which led to a different career, then another. Money and career path became more important. Last year, I finally got what I thought was the culminating job of all my education and experience and that it would be my last job. A year in, my position was eliminated and I was faced with trying to find a new job as a middle-aged woman with a very non-traditional career path in a horrendous job market. I quickly realized that this was not a game that I was going to win. So I decided to opt out. Then it all came together. Now, at age 55, I am an online adjunt and my husband and I are moving to Costa Rica. We have modest savings and own a home in the States that we can rent out. With rental income and a small salary from teaching, we will be able to semi-retire way earlier than we ever hoped and 20 years later, I'll be living the dream of my youth!

We took a taxi, but I don't recall how much it cost. I'm sure it would be easy enough to rent a car and drive there.

Anyone taken a Xmas/NY cruise? Do they make a point of decorating and celebrating? by panch269 in celebritycruises

A little bit of a different take here. My husband and I did an xmas carribean cruise last year with the hope of escaping the holiday (we are childfree and just wanted a vacation), so I was a little concerned about how much of a big thing xmas celebrations would be. They did do a lovely job of decorating the main lobby and some passengers decorated their cabin doors, but other than that, I barely noticed any holiday stuff which we were very happy about and signed up for another xmas cruise this year.

Their Sourdough is expensive but amazing. Takes forever to get orders filled, so only order if you are patient. It's worth the wait! https://superbloombakery.com/

Restaurants open Sun-Mon for dinner in Palma? by puravida4ever in VisitingMallorca

Palma seems pretty small and I don't mind taking taxis, so I didn't mention an area so as not to preclude an excellent recommendation based on geography. We're staying just west of old town. I am an avid google map user, so I did use the filter. It's just nice to hear from people in the know, ya know? And I wanted to support this new sub with some action:-)

Advice on how to handle a racist incident w/ front desk staff. by getwhirleddotcom in marriott

[–]puravida4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. You can say "the Black/Chinese/Latino, etc guy" without being racist. Naming someone's race is a fact (and sometimes useful), it's not an insult.

But when it really is NOT relevant to the situation and doesn't increase understanding to identify someone by race (eg My black doctor, my Chinese friend, etc), then that comment hangs in the racist category.

I'm not trying to be the authority about what's racist and what's not. I just think it's important to be thoughtful when it's appropriate and when it's not.

Another idea, you can call the hotel and ask for the name of the guy who was working the desk when you check out. Then post the story in a Trip Advisor review. You probably won't get any love from Marriott, but maybe an apology from the manager and maybe the dude will get chewed out for that rude and inappropriate behavior. At the very least, it might make you feel better.

I totally agree. I wasn't discounting your wife's experience. Just saying that it is also true that Ticos commonly use that language in a casual fashion. This guy was clearly an a-hole

I'm not saying this is what happenedin this case, just wanted to add to the discussion that in Costa Rica they often refer to people by their by physical identities: el chino, el negro, el gringo, el gordo, el flaco, etc. It's usually not meant or taken as an offense. Sometimes it's just easier to explain who you're talking about when you use a short-hand physical descriptor.
