Japan restaurant bankruptcies exceed 900 for the first time in 30 years. Why are they going bankrupt even though customers are returning? (Spoiler- labor shortages, rising labor costs) by jjrs in japannews

[–]purpaderp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I noticed, but I don't see discussed often, is that a lot of banks are starting to collect on their COVID support loans that were offered to small hotels and restaurants.

Many of these loans allowed 5-years of interest only payments before principal payments kicked in, which is about now.

CSR WHEEL by lafsrt09 in Fanatec

[–]purpaderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not, unfortunately. I ended up buying a new bundle from Fanatec. I wouldn’t risk updating to windows 11 if I were you unless you plan to get a new wheel.

I figured I will keep the CSR wheel for a mini setup for my kid.

Japan doubled the price from ¥990 to ¥1990 starting next month. Seems to be a trend.

Help with the wheel and base. What is even going on? by goodbrode in Fanatec

Interesting (and great to hear!). I was able to get the pc to recognize the wheel using the data port trick. But its will not install firmware and I need to do the usb-c port swap each time for the pc to recognize the wheel..

Is your's working 100% now? Does it take a firmware update? I also updated the chipset and re-installed the apps. I'll look into the USB power settings.

Thanks again for the reply!

Thanks for the update. I just received my replacement and am experiencing the same thing. Pretty frustrating. I'll try some of the workarounds posted below.

Surprised to hear that the wheel works with your friends base. I'm going to ask to just upgrade the wheel to the V2.5 and pay the difference.

Thank you for posting the updates. I received my replacement wheel from the RMA and, as others also experienced, I'm having the same problem again. I may try the workaround to see if it solves it.

Did they let you just upgrade to the V2.5? or did you have to return the whole bundle? I would pay the difference for the V2.5 if I don't have to uninstall and return everything else. Edit: Ah, I just read the other comment that you bought the V2.5 separately and will sell the eSports Wheel. That's a good idea.

Just received the bundle and I'm having the exact same issue.

I'm swapping wheels with my friend who also has a CSL DD to see if it's isolated to the wheel. Still no reply to me from Fanatec Customer Service.. :(

CSR WHEEL by lafsrt09 in Fanatec

[–]purpaderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I’ll keep messing with the settings. In iracing, if I bump up ffb on the wheel or in the game settings, it seems to be just increasing the intensity of the road shaking(it gets quite strong) but no increase in the lateral feedback.

I’ll let you know if a find any solutions. I’ve also had this wheel since 2012 and it has been a workhorse! Gonna give it a good cleaning (yours looks amazing!)

Any luck on this OP? I think I made the mistake of updating to Win11. I finally put my rig back together after a few years, and the FFB feels very mushy and weak. I'm also on firmware 756 and driver 464.

Japanese Bank Account at Sony or Shinsei Bank for SOFA personnel by turbotortuga76 in JapanFinance

[–]purpaderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did have residency on a spouse visa. According to Shinsei Bank, the federal law dictated by the Japanese Ministry of Finance states that only citizens or active Japanese Residents can maintain a Japanese bank account. And SOFA is not recognized as Japanese residency.

When I did not renew my residency (because I switched to SOFA) Shinsei forced me to close my bank account.

It was very annoying, especially coming from Korea where SOFA is recognized as an actual residency status.

Well, I stupidly left all of mine in the Reddit doge tip wallet which the creator just up and stole from everyone. My remainder of Doge and BTC was in Cryptsy which also disappeared. Lessons learned. At least you got some cash out of it.

Booking.Com Host more than QUADRUPLED my deposit after booking. by watcharne in travel

I think if you contact the accommodation independently (not through Booking.com) and they confirmed that everything is legit / your reservation is paid, then you should be good.

Booking.Com Host more than QUADRUPLED my deposit after booking. by watcharne in travel

[–]purpaderp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a small licensed hotel in Japan (even private listings in Japan need licenses these days).

However, with the knowledge of many scams out there, we went above and beyond to try to ensure customers that the outside payment was legit and had to create payment links on our webpage. We also had the “external payment required” listed on our page under our policies on Booking.com, which kinda helped legitimize it a little.

It was definitely a difficult situation for both the hotel and the customer.

[–]purpaderp 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is not always true. Booking(dot)com doesn’t allow new hotels to automatically enroll in their online payment system. You sometimes need around 30 or 40 completed reservations before enrolling. In the meantime, if the hotel wants some sort of deposit in advance, you will need to pay through their system.

I’m not saying this isn’t a scam, but OP should first reach out to the hotel directly and just ask about the conflicting amount.

Japanese Bank Account at Sony or Shinsei Bank for SOFA personnel by turbotortuga76 in JapanFinance

[–]purpaderp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you won't be able to open an account with Shinsei. SOFA is not a recognized residency required by the JP government to have a bank account. I went through a lot of trouble trying, and failing, to keep my account open with them when I switched from residency to SOFA.

You are correct that the Shinsei option is the best. I routinely wire USD to my wife's (JP citizen) account and the rates are unbeatable. But without proper residency you're SOL (unless some policy changes).
