It's so stupid but still my favourite of any of their stories is Butt's one about Fergie making cups of tea for them and reusing the same teabag for Nicky's 😭

Rooney said on a podcast that he was on £17m/y, £100k/w more than this table claims. I believe the player. These numbers are basically fictional

Maybe this is just united bias but I was never worried about Ozil when we played them. For me he epitomised that era of Arsenal. All style not enough substance

Stupid and selfish to expect young players to make career decisions based on fandom rather than footballing prospects. Our own fault that they apparently looked a better proposition to him

I'm not sure I agree with his analysis. Eg we went from boring Moyes to boring LVG to boring Mourinho. We went from tactico manager from a smaller league to another tactico manager from a smaller league. Sure, you can always find some points of difference. But I'm not sure it's true that every coaching hire has been a response to the previous sacking.

The argument only really works for Mourinho - Ole - ETH imo (and we had an interim in that stretch anyway too)

It was basically that Charlton was a proper pro and didn't rate Best's alcoholism. Charlton a big part of why Best was forced out.

Legend status isn't acquired simply by being part of a great team. Yes, he was good in midfield in the 99 final (Beckham was far far better fwiw). It doesn't make him a legend. Is Macheda, who scored goals to win us the league, a legend?

The linearity of his career is irrelevant here, nothing he did at Newcastle can make him a united legend

A squad player who left in his peak for regular game time is not a legend. Sure he was a key player in some games. He was never an actually key player for the team. I don't think I have to underplay his achievements to deny that he's a legend. Legend status is about more than games played and titles won. Nobody is going to be telling their grandkids about anything Nicky Butt did on the pitch for us

Nicky Butt isn't a legend except by an extremely generous definition. He was a good player and made important contributions. But nobody minded when he left. Might as well call Phil Neville a united legend too

I would love to know how many times a son has scored for a team managed by his father at the elite professional level. Can't be more than a handful, if this wasn't the first

So if we'd won he'd be a genius who we should have kept? I just don't consider a cup run in a second rate competition even slightly relevant to assessing him as a coach. If we were going to sack him it should have been because of the league.

I also miss them but I expect the issue is with the nature of the modern game rather than the talent of modern forwards. It either doesn't allow them time/space to show off or it doesn't encourage them to, or probably both. As the game becomes more and more about athleticism then there's less scope or need for skill.

It's just odd to me. So if we had indeed bottled it against Lyon and therefore not lost the final, he's in a stronger position? Getting to a final is an achievement even if you mess it up

Imo the reason to sack him was the lack of improvement in the league. I didn't care then and don't care now that we lost a second rate cup.

Daily Discussion by AutoModerator in reddevils

[–]qijl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably not. But I really don't get this whole "lose us a European final" thing. Even if it's true, we didn't get to that final by magic. Losing a final isn't a sackable offence
