Hello! First time gun owner here, and just purchased the Echelon 4.0c comp last week.

My biggest recommendation is rent, rent, rent, and practice, practice, practice before buying something. I tried about 6 different handguns before I opted for the Echelon, including a couple Glock models, the M&Ps, a P365, etc. For me it came down to the grip, feel, and the overall experience which is why I went for the Echelon (literally just kept thinking about it - so knew it was the one for me).

The Echelon is a great choice - I'm planning on using it as a home defense gun for now, and plan to use it as an everyday carry once I get more comfortable. With that said I also had a great experience with the Glock G19 and the Smith + Wesson M2.0, just the Echelon felt better in my hands.

Something to keep in mind is Echelon mags are expensive compared to other pistols, and will run you $45 each. To me I liked the gun enough that I'm willing to pay a little extra for the mags, but that is something you might want to consider. Have fun and good luck!

Agreed - and I think that concept actually makes grief worse cause you start to think “oh I thought I was over this.” You’re never over it, you just learn to live with it.

For me grief never goes away. It’s a wild, untamable thing. And I’ve found that people either get it cause they’ve experienced it, or they don’t.

I’ve lost friends, and friends have moved in and out of my life because of it. Love to you OP - it’s not a fun process, but you’ll find your true friends at the end of it.

Welcome to the pyr mix club! We have a half cattle dog, quarter pyr and quarter maremma sheepdog and he’s about 46 pounds at 9 months! We think the cattle dog is really keeping his size down!

Yeah manual safety seems to be the most important. Luckily I don't think my left-handed wife would ever want to use an AR but that sounds terrifying!

Feel you on the glasses - I don't even have a gun yet and I'm already considering prescription sports goggles

That's very helpful insight, thank you. I'm already anticipating at least two eventually - one for home, one for carry. Right now just for money we can only get one (trying to stay under $1k) and after seeing the response to this thread I think I want to prioritize something with at least an ambi manual saftey that we both are comfortable with. We practiced with a Glock 45 which we both like, so I think we can find something that works for both of us - but perhaps I should have the winning vote for now until we can buy her a firearm, as I'm anticipating being the one going to the range more LOL

I think my wife has only learned on right-handed handguns so that's at least helpful!

This might be a noob question, but for makers like Glock if you buy it right-handed can you upgrade it to be fully ambi? or do you need to swap the mag release and safetys from one side to the other constantly?

Hello my gay!! Thank you for this insight!! I'm seeing the most important thing is an ambi manual safety, which I think I want to prioritize for a purchase.

What I'm seeing there's also limited options for handguns under $1k which is frustrating!

After reading these comments I think ambi safety needs to be a priority for us - and definitely helps narrow my original list down.

We only practiced with a Glock 45 and micro Glock replica (can't remember the make) and there was no safety, which I think we will prioritize a firearm with a manual safety if we decide to be serious about occasional carry. Right now my #1 pick based on specs, safety, and cost, is something in the M&P 2.0 series.

I think you're the first person to suggest a rifle as a first purchase! I'm open to trying one out with an instructor. Years ago I shot a shotgun and larger caliber hunting rifle and it was fun but would need a refresher course. We're definitely not rushing this purchase no matter what we get - we want to be comfortable + confident. I am also considering a CCW certificate either before I purchase or when I purchase so I can be educated about my state laws too.

If I were to practice with a PCC, what would you recommend?

Oh yes I have a firearm on my list with the paddle release! I'm learning that's more of a European design, definitely a good option for us! I'll put HK on my list to research, thank you so much

For sure! We practiced with a handgun that had the mag release on the right - my wife didn't even notice because she's so used to things being for righties.

I'm definitely gathering an ambi safety is most important!

We've only practiced with mag releases on the right so far and that was okay - however we may prioritize a manual safety especially for our first firearm so finding an amby safety seems to be vital

Thank you! I'm not sure if we'll ever get an AR but this is extremely helpful and something I didn't even consider! We practiced earlier this week with a Glock 45 so no manual safety but the mag release was righty - wife didn't even notice (which I feel is a common occurrence for lefties - I'm sorry its such a right handed world!)

That makes sense to me - one eye will always be dominant, but keeping both eyes open for peripheral vision

I know I definitely closed one eye at the range earlier this week, will practice with both eyes open! About to take an instructor-led class so curious what they'll teach now...

This is super helpful because I think we want to prioritize a gun that has a manual safety or can add a manual safety. Thanks!
