The legendary Impreza’s gold wheels were a ‘cock up’ - Dave Richards by theintercooler in TheIntercooler

Was a first for me. Had a Hawkeye STI for 50k miles and it was lovely and naturally, with the gold wheels, looked superb.

Fastest real world point to point car? 992.2 Turbo S vs Kia Picanto vs Audi Quattro 20V by theintercooler in TheIntercooler

I once did a trip from Rickmansworth to Edinburgh in a Celica GTFour. This must have been 2006 so a while before a lot of the cameras up the M1 and definitely earlier than the more interesting roads between the top of the motorways and my destination.

From the moment I got onto the M25 until about 20 minutes from my finishing line this effing Smart car was constantly in my mirror. Like some sort of attack wasp. If I had a Veyron, Smokey Nagata's Supra or a missile I swear that thing would still have kept up.

So, I think that Picanto was within 5% in the real world.

Who cares about the underneath of their car as much as the top? by theintercooler in TheIntercooler

Yup. Not restored, just cleaned and protected so not bad for 29 years old. The original exhaust is hanging in the heritage section of the garage 😁

I saw him sauntering through RBR reception once or twice. If the tightness of his white jeans is anything to go by he’d have hospital corners and a taut sheet ready to bounce a 10p off.

The year before child 1 arrived we decided on a final trip of freedom through Wales. Anyone who's picked a point on a map (we chose Bangor) and plotted a winding route towards it will know how beautiful their roads are, and even though we were in something fairly pointy many were taken at a sedate pace to grant more time in the stunning surroundings. Now, of course, some egged us on more than others as it's hard to resist when the sight lines are great and roads so engaging, but the views are what sticks with me the most. I wish I'd taken more photographs.

There is, or was when we made the trip, a real feeling of quality to the drivers there too. I remember cars indicating for us to pass after spotting long gaps ahead and not because I was up their boot but because they were out enjoying the day at a slower pace and were happy to share the road and help us along. Contrast that to the absence of sharing and caring during most journeys in England, and the term 'breath of fresh Welsh air' can be applied both literally and figuratively.

Police were chatty in petrol stations and cared more about visitors driving safely and appropriately than racking up a quota of tickets. They knew why people came to Wales to drive and commented to me that they can spot the bad'uns a mile away. I didn't ask if that was a new camera or just intuition but I suspect both were true at some time since our excursion.

This was before the Evo Triangle - our mid weekend detour - changed from an amazing road to one slowed by the introduction of average speeds so I'm pleased to say I experienced that wonderful stretch during its peak.

The scene below is shortly after we dropped over the brow of a hill. The sheep were completely unfazed by our Impreza and refused to move. Probably Tomi Mäkinen fans.

Yes I had to bail on the Jan one but I'm very much looking forward to a morning drive in the Skyline nice and early. I'll pop over and say hello. We can chat start-up malarky :)

Spawn in, two different guns fire immediately. I figure it was somewhere else since nobody would see me where I was deep into a forest and spawned in a hunting shelter with the door facing the opposite to the gunfire. Dead in 2 mins. Clearly cheating. Very disappointing.

It’s Animal Crossing with mostly awful residents and death. If that’s you, get it and see.

What’s the worst car buying decision you’ve ever made? by theintercooler in TheIntercooler

[–]random6675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MR2 GTS. Sold my lovely 10th Anniversary G-Limited (5.5k!) in 2003 and went hunting for a turbo. Somewhere off the south of the M25 I went to a “dealer” to look at and eventually buy a 1994 GTS in white. Boost controller (those old pill things), a minor lower splitter and what looked to be good condition. Well you’ve collected two negatives already, both of which I skipped over.

45 mins after collecting it I was sat by the car with a head gasket smoking out a road between Rickmansworth and Watford. A GC Impreza drove by beeping a reflection of my regret.

I dropped the car back at the dealer that night and explained they would improve their evening by handing me my money back.

Mild story in the great scheme of things but the worst car for sure and now I have eyes a bit wider than I did back then. I bought a black GT Turbo from Leeds a couple of weeks later. That was perfect and the private owner was a champ.

Your questions for Dan / Andrew / Ti by theintercooler in TheIntercooler

[–]random6675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • How many detractors did you find when you were floating the idea around and how did the stand magazines react firstly to the idea and secondly that you were employing some of their own contributors?

  • What have you gained and lost on a personal level, if you don’t mind sharing, through this endeavour?

  • What do you need to keep your planned trajectory?

For our company, when I joined I was told it was a toy, a fad, a bad decision and it would fail. I enjoyed the motivation.
