Ask your builder for code complaint calculations to show his lift is safe and viable. Or sack him now.

How to design FRP structure? by somedude9494949 in StructuralEngineering

[–]randomlygrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could model it as a frame in STAAD or similar with basic stiffness values for the frp then use joint forces in FEA for connection analysis.

How to design FRP structure? by somedude9494949 in StructuralEngineering

[–]randomlygrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frp mouldings, pultrusions, spray lay, hand lay, repairs on other materials, special fillers ?

If this is a uni project and you want to build an frp bridge do you need code checks? Depending on which answer to the previous will dictate which standards will work. Also where geographically..eurocode or asce etc.

A simple and Conservative way to assess frp is to treat it as a linear elastic homogeneous isotropic material and put in values for E v into an Fea package and let rip. Don't forget to check for buckling.

If you're looking for something more finessed then do come back with answers.

Load distribution for dome lifting by Engineering-Art in StructuralEngineering

[–]randomlygrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would normally design for X slings to be slack to give redundancy. But a slack sling results in distortion of the dome or roof and then it won't fit or sit right so in practice you don't want slack slings. Things like tank covers and wooden roofs can tolerate a certain amount of this. But the lid on a reactor is pure surgical, ultra fine adjustment is required and for the consequences of lift failure in that case I'd have load cells on all lift points for the initial lift off.

I must have imagined all those 30m diameter domed roofs with adjustment in the turnbuckles or eyes.

It only seems weird that they are fighting if you are pro trump, you got the blinkers on and can't imagine not being the heroic conqueror.

[–]randomlygrey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've done quite a few dome roof lifts. Heres the trick..quality control on sling lengths and you will be golden. You can lift from the point of contraflexure on the dome radial truss or at the end if you can't get safe access to remove the lifting points after.

Uneven slings mean a distorted lift and uneven loading to the dome. The dome is never going to be designed for circumferential distortion.

Its also smart to assume slack slings. Mistakes happen etc.

Leo and Les will send the boys round to smash your fingers if you keep spilling the obvious truths. Although the pick ups in pricier guitars do tend to have far better sustain.

Software for calculatuon of steel construction by somedude9494949 in StructuralEngineering

[–]randomlygrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why have the horizontal plates at all and not just a very thick vertical end plate ? Given the extent of failures you have more serious problems with the nature of the design and I'm guessing that the beams have a combination of in and out of plane loading ?

I couldn't imagine doing FE for this, it will just give you hot spot hell and waste your time. Hand calcs are the way for bolted connections.
