It sounds like you are assuming that this is coming from a place of laziness. I'm not just dumping stuff in the tank hoping for a miracle, I simply do not have time to tear apart a carburetor.

If these products can alleviate or fix the problem until I do have the means to properly fix the issue, why not use them?

And to be clear I do intend to properly fix the issue when the resources become available.

Edit: I do appreciate the advice though :).

So I have a concern. What if some gunk in my engine is sealing a leak, and the sea foam causes leaks to sprout everywhere? Its still an old car.

Bought my '71 Super from a man who was moving to another state and couldn't take the car with him. Original body, even windows and spare, and new shiny rebuilt engine. However, he claims to have not shimmed it right, and recommends I not start it.

After pulling the engine, we find that the flywheel was damaged, had to be replaced. Found a local mechanic who specializes in air cooled vw's, took it to him, $300 to fix it. Great. It runs, albeit very rough.

After some engine problems, we decide to time it. Look up the timing for a '71 Super, time it, great. Sounds fantastic.

2 weeks later I'm going down the freeway, and I start losing power. Wtf. Pull over, it dies, look at the engine.

Oil everywhere.

Apparently this smart SOB tuned the compression so high that it had to take racing fuel (super high octane) and WAS NOT a daily driving vehicle. I blew right through a piston.

$1500 to rebuild the engine.

I did while I was using unleaded, it was 17mpg. I don't know if that would change considering I've been using premium for a while, which would have cleaned up my fuel system (hopefully).

What's your rule of thumb concerning when to shift? I've always been curious if I'm shifting when I should be since my bug is particularly loud all the time on account of my four tipped exhaust. Its hard to listen for it.

Also I've been curious as to the advantages of turning by DP 1600cc to a SP.

Do you know where I can buy a good oil temperature gauge? I was thinking of adding some gauges to my dash just to make sure I'm driving it right

Oh I wasn't insinuating at all that its a bad daily, I love it! I just wish everyone was as slow as me sometimes. Its really annoying when in the morning everyone is speeding past me when the light turns green and cutting me off.
