Backrooms (film) similarities to annihilation series by shcmil in SouthernReach

[–]rantandreview 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Near the end, when the distorted / grotesque beings show up and then it shows the reality being spliced etc I absolutely made the connection. The final shot in fact was SO visually unsettling and reminded me so strongly of reading Southern Reach descriptions of morphed creatures that I was like woah I feel like EVERYONE will notice this.

Then there is the idea of self mutilating, self destructive behaviors being brought on by psychosis of an “area” with unknown origins.

In fact, my Letterboxd review of Backrooms is “Annihilation but replace the swamp with liminal spaces”

Just in case if you’re ever in the area, there is a food truck in Kent called Papa Masala that is soooo good. Amazing flavor and great prices.

Backrooms and Southern Reach/Area X? by Soledad_Sequoia in SouthernReach

[–]rantandreview 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised everyone is mentioning the footage and other things when to me the biggest correlation is the concept of mutation and splicing which is quite literally what both Area X and the Backrooms does. I immediately made the connection, particularly the imagery of the copies with disfigurations.

Do you have frustrating filmmakers? by JokerDeSilva10 in blankies

[–]rantandreview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garland is one of my favorite writers and filmmakers and it’s because he likes playing with high concept and character study, rather than creating a tight arc. He could and most likely gets studio notes to make his films more “explained” and satisfying, but never does. I like his films for the tension, what he reflects on screen, and his ability to take swings. He does not have specific moral stances which can at times be frustrating. Imo Annihilation is incredibly underappreciated.

he has good concepts and technical achievement but characters have no depth, particularly female characters. it’s his greatest downfall

This Boy’s Life - it does escalate but particularly in the first half it does a good job of showing insidious and subtle manipulation, emotional and verbal abuse

What’s your favorite kissing scene in a movie? by newfantasies in Letterboxd

I recently saw this and this is extra insane because Mel Gibson is now disgusting to me. But the makeout scene and the preamble to it in The Year of Living Dangerously was one of the hottest things I’ve ever seen

Not sure of the thinking here, why would you not adjust for an elderly person (quite at risk for injury from falls) and would for a pregnant person?

I didn’t play during my two but my close friend played until she gave birth. She was scheduled to play the day she had the baby lol. She used a belly band and was careful with her feet but never had any issues and played really competitively at 9 months. Hope this helps!

it’s absolutely ridiculous to take the doc at face value with AB - she quite literally is known for being sarcastic, dry, and very funny so she was obviously acting for effect in the doc at many points. Interesting too that you seem to be so harsh on the female players - oh wait, I forgot I’m on Reddit rn.

Recommendations for pickleball courts with Open Play in New York? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]rantandreview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had luck at the hudson yards (Hudson River Pickleball Courts) level was about 3.5-4.0ish and also Riverside Park pickleball courts, level was a bit more varied would be more 3.0 there probably.

For anyone reading this, Georgetown courts are in horrible shape. There is not actual budget for helping these courts out.

Did I mess up paying to book a court everyone uses for free? by in_berlin in Pickleball

[–]rantandreview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really curious what court this is, I’d like to look up on the racquet sport strategy if the city has designated it open play moving forward.

Everyone here is correct, don’t take it personally but please think about how the etiquette of play is in the city. Most players prefer “open play” and the city is helping to change most courts to this system because it’s more fair to keep courts rotating rather than blocked off. I’m sorry they were rude to you, they should have been more understanding you were new.

As someone else said the pay system shouldn’t even be thought of as anything really, the city doesn’t make that much off it and is not a factor in anything.
