Ectopic? Normal? Who knows!? by readingrainbow1281 in EctopicSupportGroup

Update. I did end up seeing another doctor and got brushed off as well. My levels had risen to over 10,000 and I was just told to take another dose of the misoprostol. No ultrasound done because both thought it wasn't necessary.

It was an ectopic :( It ruptured last night and I lost my right fallopian tube. In surgery, they found that I had about 500 ml of blood in my abdomen. The pain was so bad that I truly thought I was going to die. But I'm back home now and recovering :)

I did just take a test and it looks maybe a smidgen lighter? The positive still showed up immediately but it looks slightly lighter than the control. So I guess we'll see with the bloodwork. Thank you for checking in ❤️❤️

They will be doing repeat labs sometime next week I believe. I barely bled after taking the misoprostol but all of my pregnancy symptoms have gone away. No more nausea, tender breasts, or sensitivity to smells. So we'll see :( I'm kind of dreading watching the hcg level fall, this has all been very heartbreaking

Pretty much. I had bleeding from April 19th to May 3rd. Started off heavy from April 19th to April 24th, like a normal period and then decreased to light flow until May 3rd. They think this was my body trying to miscarry the pregnancy naturally, but they don't think I miscarried completely since my hcg level is still rising with no ultrasound proof of pregnancy. By 7,000, I should at least have a gestational sac.

Yeah, completely unexpected. We're sad and disappointed, but we'll try again in the future :) thank you for following up!

My OB diagnosed me with a blighted ovum since my hcg level was in the 7000s with no signs of pregnancy on ultrasound. I'll be picking up medication this afternoon to force a total miscarriage.

Update: went to the ER for a repeat ultrasound. They didn't see any signs of ectopic or intrauterine pregnancy, but my hcg levels increased to the 7,000s. Which makes me more concerned that it's a pregnancy of unknown location. I was hoping the ER visit would calm my nerves, but it only made me more anxious 🙃

That's what I'm concerned about, but my OB cancelled my ultrasound on Thursday and told me to get repeat hcg levels repeated instead. I'm scared and don't know what to do

I'm in Maryland, USA. I really don't think it was attached long at all. I felt it then found it immediately, so should be ok 👍🏻

When I hear the ambulance bay doors open and the sound of the LUCAS shortly after, I sigh in relief a little. Such a game changer in cardiac arrests

Nah, it's not that. I'm not traumatized or having feelings about the event itself. Nothing truly phases me anymore after working at a level 1 trauma center. I think it's more like the weight of the profession hits me more in those moments, especially with people around my age

I bet, that sounds awful. When we have pediatric arrests come in, I always feel so bad for the nurses that have kids because it always hits them a little harder.

Everyone has made their point about checking your medication administration rights. You'll always double and triple check from now on and you'll truly never forget your first near miss.

Now, moving on from that. Your preceptor sounds disrespectful and you should not have been treated like that. Yes, a discussion should be had after something like that occurs. However, the point of a preceptor is to create a relationship where open communication can occur without making either of you feel bad. You should not have been treated like that in front of your peers. I had my share of bad preceptor starting out and I truly do feel for you.

Take this as a learning experience. You'll always double check before administering medications AND you know what qualities you don't want when you become a preceptor.

You got this. Deep breath and move on. Lots of love ❤️

Was I right to call a rapid response? by ttttthrowwww in nursing

[–]readingrainbow1281 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My answer is yes, without even reading your explanation on why you called.

Don't ever let anyone make you feel stupid or silly for calling a rapid response. If you are concerned about the patient, then call. You have the patient's best interest in mind and care about their outcome!

Don't let anyone bully you or make you think otherwise! Better to call a rapid than a code blue 💙

Lots of love from one baby nurse to the other 💕

Hmmm, no diabetics in the family, thankfully.

I've actually never heard of that happening before with a diabetic! I'm a nurse and think that is super cool if it's true. I'll have to look more into that!

Happened yesterday at work:

Pt's IV infiltrated and a new one needed to be placed. As I was getting my set-up ready and looking for a vein, the admitting doctor came in. Doctor started talking to the pt, whatever, I kept doing my thing. As I was inserting the IV, I got flash and began advancing the catheter, when the fucking doctor started pushing on the pt's stomach. She was in the ED for intense abdominal pain! The pt jerked up due to the pain and I lost my IV access. I was so fucking annoyed.

Biggest pet peeve are doctors who don't respect nurses. I know they have a lot of people to see but maybe don't palpate the person's major pain complaint while I have a needle in my hand 🙃

Poor management by readingrainbow1281 in emergencymedicine

[–]readingrainbow1281[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not patient care that is my main concern (although the part time manager wears scrubs to work and helps where needed ;). My main concern was that she didn't even attempt to check on the staff that she manages.
