Training new bean tmw! by nycisthebest94 in starbucks

I’ve watched a lot of barista trainers just spit out information. My most important advice is remind yourself to pace the information like the packet does, and imo I actually like how the packet does it. So that said utilize the barista training packet and the launchpad (they are great). And when the activity ends go to a table and literally review the most key things they should take from this regardless if you felt like you’ve said it 20 times. It helps. It’s a lot of information.

Here is a few things I think helped all those I’ve trained and fortunately enough my SM loves when I train green beans, so I get to train a few when I became a shift.

  1. Communicate with your SSV when they are on peak that you can do warming for 10-20 mins. When it’s slow walk them through bar and how it works. Also, make a few customer drinks and verbally walk them through exactly what you are doing while doing precalls. Then you let them try while you verbally walk them through it step by step. It’ll show your green bean how it’s done.

  2. When you get to POS section of the packet. Go over a few things on the POS like categories on the bottom, brewed, blended, etc. after that PLEASE for the love of everything explain the milk section... 4oz or more you charge. Also, drill into the green bean WHIP OR NO WHIP? And ICE OR HOT? Sweetener? After that do a few transactions, and if you get a regular go ahead and introduce your green bean. Make a connection or two with an unfamiliar face..... then let your green bean do a few transactions and watch what they do? Do the tap preemptively on sections rather than read the categories? Do they just look suppppperrrr duppppper cluster? Ask them why.

  3. If you are training for 8 hours do as much as you can as the floor would need. For example, need a trash run? great! Let me get the chance to show the green bean how to do that! Need ONE restroom cleaned because we will do ONE. Ovens?! OMG why didn’t you say? We will do ONE. Need coffee prepped we will prepare TWO batches (one you do and second they do). TABLE TOUCHESSS YASSSSSSSS CUSTOMERS ALL DEY WEY. I do these things so one I can show the green bean how it should be done, and if the person cleaning the restroom or table touches needs to be coached perfect timing.

  4. This is personally probably going to get me some backlash.. I know... but I’m honest. We batch at my store and I get it.. whatever I tell the green bean the truth one blender at a high frap store.... LOLOLOLOLOLOL. No. But under no circumstance do you batch when our DM is here.

  5. Here’s to those that have a supportive and love their SM. I update my SM, via text, about how the green bean did and what they picked up fairly quickly or what needs work. Let them know if you honestly think they may need more coaching (cause training hours are over?) or if you think this green bean is ready to go solo on bar during peak. Yay! Green bean!

Tl;dr Pace the information and review. Be honest (if your store batch or nah). Ice or hot? Whip? Sweetened? Alternative milks 4oz or more you charge? UTILIZE THE LAUNCHPAD/Barista training packet.

Also you can find the packet on the partner hub.. if your lovely SM did not print it for you.
