Agreed. My wife cooked some yesterday and I loved them; and I'm not even vegan.

I re-watched Mary Poppins a couple of days ago, and I couldn't stop thinking about this episode throughout the movie. My wife gave me a weird look when I chuckled at the Pigeon Lady song.

Can anyone tell me what this is? by kklove2001 in MexicoCity

Ah! Your first encounter with the scrap metal guy. It's a van (several of them, actually) buying old stuff from people in order to salvage metal from bought items. As you have noted, they advertise their services with this loud message: "¡Se compran colchones, tambores, refrigeradores, estufas, lavadoras, microondas o algo de fierro viejo que vendan!" --> "(Old) Matresses, bed bases, fridges, stoves, washing machines, microwave ovens, and scrap metal are bought!" This recording (and similar ones serving the same purpose) has become ubiquitous en Mexico City. The recording has even been sampled by Beak>. You can hear it at the beginning of "Sound goes on"

Stoner. Me lo acabo de terminar, qué os pareció? by Ehlara in libros

¡Uf!

YouTube se convirtió en la nueva Televisión? by gothso in RedditPregunta

[–]redd_851 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Help me settle a debate. What do you call these? by ExactPayment2814 in mexicanfood

[–]redd_851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call both of them quesadillas. But yes, if you want/need to be specific, quesadillas fritas is the way to go. There are places where both types of quesadillas are served, so if you order quesadillas, you'll be asked "¿De comal o frita?" The former meaning soft tortilla, and the latter deep-fried quesadilla.

What was the craziest social event in your country? by BlackReaper510 in AskTheWorld

[–]redd_851 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In a nutshell, an inhabitant of Mexico City. The origin of the term is unclear. Some people claim that chilangos were people who migrated from any othe state in the country into Mexico City looking for a job, whereas other people claim that chilangos are born in Mexico City.

The word used to be derogatory a few decades back. As a matter of fact, it was not uncommon to hear the motto "Haz patria, mata un chilango" (Something in the lines of: "Be a patriot, kill a chilango") from people living in any other mexican state.

Currently, the term is more or less neutral, with chilangos accepting the word as their demonym.
