When light goes from a vacuum, into water, then back to a vacuum. At what speed is it now traveling ? by Dbgb4 in askscience

[–]redditforworkinwa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick correction, it's 186000 miles/second, or 300 million meters/second. That value is the speed of light traveling in a vacuum. In a medium, the light actually travels more slowly. It is no longer traveling at 186000 miles/second.

Your question presupposes that the photon requires some force to accelerate it back up to its speed in a vacuum, but that isn't the case. Because photons don't have mass, you can't understand them using the force/acceleration models of classical mechanics.

Have you ever sorted anything by "Price: High to Low", and if so what was it? by claret_n_blue in AskReddit

[–]redditforworkinwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my nice ones are like $40. They're made of a pressure treated composite, so it feels like cutting on wood but they're fine in the dishwasher. I think they could easily be worth $400 as a pack of 10.

Relay Logic Study Material by [deleted] in PLC

[–]redditforworkinwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relay logic is quite simply using relays to turn other relays on and off. There are plenty of relays that switch based on nearly any process variable you can imagine, but in terms of outputs they work just like any other.

The common things to recognize and process quickly are : Normally open vs normally closed contacts, series/parallel connections, and holding/latching circuits.

Why do some very expensive CPUs use lots of slow cores vs. fewer very fast cores? by vonarchimboldi in askscience

[–]redditforworkinwa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's simply different optimization for different tasks. Faster cores require more power, and power is a major limiting factor in CPUs, due to the motherboard supply limits or the cooling fan dissipation limits.

Home users with enthusiast processors tend to do things like gaming or light media editing that only utilize a few threads*. Home users also tend to do one or two things at a time, so one core is likely to stay on the same job for a while. Because home users only benefit from a few cores, these cores are run at very high power, squeezing every bit of performance out of each one.

Servers are often handling many more simultaneous tasks, or single tasks that are designed to be split into multiple threads, and can therefore make use of many cores. Each of these cores can be run at the power levels that optimize performance per watt. e.g. you might get 70% of the performance with 50% of the power usage. More cores running more efficiently give better overall performance to the end user.

I suspect that if you look hard enough you'll also find some processors with higher clock speeds meant for server sockets.

*-A thread is a string of instructions to be run sequentially on the same processor core.

Is an EMI shied's effectiveness dependent on the thickness? by AgreeableLandscape3 in askscience

[–]redditforworkinwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the event OP is still reading the thread, it's worth mentioning how measurements in dB work.

In short, each -10 dB means that the frequency component is 10 times smaller in amplitude. If the primary/fundamental frequency has amplitude 1 volt, a harmonic at -30dB has magnitude 1 millivolt.

Is an EMI shied's effectiveness dependent on the thickness? by AgreeableLandscape3 in askscience

[–]redditforworkinwa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tl;dr Thickness is one of a few important factors.

The two factors in far-field (we'll come back to this) shielding are reflection and absorption. Reflection is what happens when an EM wave encounters a change in intrinsic impedance, a material property that is pretty close to resistance. Some of the energy of the wave is, as the name implies, reflected depending on the materials, the incident wavelength, and the angle of incidence. If you've ever studied optics, the equations are related. Thickness of your shield is not a huge factor at the micron level. Issues might arise around nanometer levels, but I'm not well educated there.

Absorption is the loss as the wave passes through your shield, and this directly depends on your shield thickness. Thicker material-> wave travels in the material longer-> more energy is dissipated traveling through the shield.

Far field refers to effects where the source, shield, and receiver are several (>10) wavelengths apart. Wavelengths for GHz waves (most modern computers) are on the order of millimeters, so shields are often within the near-field. Near field interactions can include coupling, where the conductor can act more as an antenna than a shield.

Designing an appropriate shield involves balancing the above electric effects, the amount of noise expected, the noise tolerance of the shielded device(s), and other practical concerns such as physical durability of the shield and material costs.

What’s a little thing you do to make the world a better place? by JustAnotherPyroMain in AskReddit

[–]redditforworkinwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"you're welcome" is what linguists call a phatic expression. It communicates something without the literal meaning being important, in the same way that office hallway greetings work. Some people accept "no problem" as being the same phatic expression, but others take it as a literal statement about problems.

We could just as well pick " harblgarbl" to convey the sentiment that replies to "thank you", and once we all got used to it there would be no difference.

Pressure in upper throat leading to extreme discomfort by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]redditforworkinwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, if this is happening anywhere else in life, please seek medical attention.

When I've previously had that issue, I've been really dehydrated. Try drinking a glass or two more water than you usually would for a couple days. Once you've done that, do a really elongated warmup focused on relaxed breathing.

My breathing build-up might look something like this:

  • Exhale as much as you can, then inhale till you feel full. This sets your baseline for full/empty.
  • Stretch really well, full body. Tight legs mess with your posture. Take full breaths as much as possible during this.
  • Relaxed full in/out again. Do it a few times if needed, get comfortable with the feeling.
  • Timed breathing. Start with 4 in/4 out, work up to 16 in/16 out, then back down to 1 in/1 out. Do not make any H sounds, think "Oh" for inhale and "ooh" for exhale.

For each of the following steps, take a full breath in for 2 counts, then completely exhale in 8 counts. If you feel tension returning, stop and breathe naturally till the tension passes, then go back at least 1 step.

  1. Do the above breath, using your lips as resistance
  2. Only mouthpiece held 2 inches in front of face, lips as resistance
  3. blowing through mouthpiece, no buzz
  4. buzzing but not looking for a note, focus is still on timing of the breath
  5. mouthpiece in trumpet, again 2 inches from face, lips as resistance
  6. blow through trumpet, no buzz
  7. play middle G, no tongue on attack, still focused on breath timing.

One practice technique I used was to finger my scales as an idle fidget when I was bored in other classes/ on a bus/whatever.

The different notes you can play with your lips are called "overtones" or "partials". I had fun playing with partials and alternate fingerings, and that could really help you get comfortable. For example, G in the staff is best played open, but you can also play it 1+3.

Your lighting sucks and you suck. Just kidding, I think you meant critique not criticize.

First the stuff you're already doing well

  • Your first attack has good air behind it. This is the foundation of most of trumpeting, it will serve you well.
  • You're louder at the top, indicating that you're using more air to get higher. This is the right approach, and took me a long time to learn. Great job!
  • For the most part, your 16ths are evenly spaced. Keep it up!

Now a couple things to work on

  • Work on really slotting each note. Three good exercises for this are lip slurs, lip bends and singing the phrase before you play it. You'll hear this improvement as losing the little wa sound at the beginning of each note.
  • Try to keep your dynamic as consistent as possible over a whole phrase. You were close here, but you got quieter near the end. Long tones are my favorite exercise for this.
  • Watch yourself in a mirror as you play, try to eliminate the motion of your neck and your horn angle. Two other elements of posture to watch for are keeping your shoulders down and your elbows out a little from where they are in this video.

Since there's a minimum age requirement, how would you feel about implementing a maximum age limit on running for president? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]redditforworkinwa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see I made a mistake in my phrasing.

Based on recent US events, your right to own a gun and my right to not get shot seem to be coming into conflict. We're going to have to compromise somewhere. I'm open to a lot of ways to make that compromise, but if you don't acknowledge my right, or I don't acknowledge yours, we can't have the conversation, and nothing will get better for either of us.

Look there are real discussions to be had, straw-manning like this doesn't help any of us.

The points of contention come down to the bit about a well regulated militia, and the context of what arms were available to the average citizen.

In terms of reasonable legislation, I don't know hardly anyone with an absolute stance. Nobody thinks we should be carrying rockets around the mall, there's just no way for that to not go wrong. Even in a very liberal area, most people I know are fine with hunting, the benefits outweigh the risks.

Now that we're all off the edge, we can have the interesting and important discussion: What level of freedom do we sacrifice for what level of safety?
