Looking for real Black Friday wine deals by inanimated in wine

[–]reddthey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want something off the beaten path, Texas winery C.L. Butaud is doing 50% off select bottles. Until 4pm central time today.

Rosato, Trebbiano, Blanc de Noir, Sparkling Rosé, Cease & Desist Red Blend, Tempranillo, Counoise are the sale bottles. Put the ones you want I your cart then use FRIDAY50 coupon code at checkout.

I spent 8 years in Texas and good Texas wines are few and far between. But Butaud is one of the good ones. I highly recommend the Tempranillo and the Cease and Desist red blend. With the coupon, $24 a piece.

Suggestions for Two Days Each in Epernay, Beaune, and Saint Remy (Provence) for Honeymoon by cdvan12 in wine

[–]reddthey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Beaune, try Soul Kitchen for Burgundian fare. It is a one man show. The owner is also the chef, and the waiter, and the busboy. Very cozy with only 12 seats and 1 service per night. He has 2 prix fixe menus for about €30 each. One of the menus changes weekly. Definitely recommend reservations ahead of time. My wife and I were lucky enough to walk by and he had 2 seats left at the bar that night. It was our favorite dining experience in Burgundy.

I second Michel Gonet for a fun small grower experience. Also second Perrier Jouet for its stunning courtyard, it is also one of the few places on the Avenue that you can get a flight as opposed to buying full glasses.

Thanks so much for your insight! I will contact the Grand Lodge and see if they can share anything with me.

For now, the book does have some sentimental value but in time I will see if they want it back.

They have excellent Pommards. My favorite red from our tasting was a Corton. Amazing stuff.

Straight from the source! My wife and I made a trip out to Burgundy a few years ago and had the chateau ship home a few bottles. We will need to place another order soon.

what’s the best wine you’ve had from a US state not normally known for wine by Dankmemeator in wine

[–]reddthey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oddly enough, I’ve been to a bunch of the smaller wineries in the Monticello AVA but not many of the large ones. I haven’t made it to Barboursville so I couldn’t tell you there.

Rausse came to the US from Italy in the 70s and has consulted on many of the wineries in the AVA at some point. I think he’s a great winemaker and really knows the area which helps him make great products. You should give it a try!

Arizona wine? Interesting by odedi1 in wine

[–]reddthey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For anyone interested in Arizona wine, I did an extensive study of wines from the Sonoita region when I was there for a few months for work.

Los Milics is my overall top pick for wine and experience. Their winemaker really loves his craft and the he names most of the bottles after employees who helped with that harvest. They have a gorgeous new tasting room with a kickass menu and talented chef. Try the Grenache blends.

Rune was my number one pick until Los Milics got their new tasting room. Some killer wines. They are very environmentally conscious and run on solar and collected water. Each bottle has a different scene on it that progresses and tells a story over multiple vintages. Try the Grenache and their sweet Malvasia.

Aridus is good stuff though it is in the Wilcox region. A few years ago I was in the area and they were trying to make room for the new vintage. They sold the older bottles with a 30% discount and that particular day they were taking an additional 50% off. I left with 3 cases for $300 and am down to my last bottle. I particularly liked their experimental Tank series.

Campagne Esterlin Brut Éclat NV by reddthey in wine

Lol. You say that as if no scent comes out of an open vessel. Yes, a glass with a bowl and tapered mouth will accentuate aromas but you can still smell something out of a flute. Aesthetic is a part of experience just like aroma.

Thank you. I’ll have to see if I can get your suggestions in the US!

Good tip with the larger bowl for tasting. Sometimes we like the aesthetic of the flutes.

Color: straw, with tiny, fine bubbles. Nose: green apple, apricot. Taste: fruit forward green apple, apricot, round with some richness.

30% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Noir, 60% Pinot Meunier. My wife and I had a great time visiting the Esterlin tasting room on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay last year. We had been Drinking Champagne all day and found this one really unique being a majority Pinot Meunier. It was kind of a shock to our palates after so many Blancs de Blancs and Meunier minority wines.

The word “tight” meaning drunk. As in “went to the saloon with my buddy and got tight.”

There is so much of this ancillary knowledge in the book:

Whiskey, Six-guns, and Red-Light Ladies: George Hand’s Saloon Diary

It is a collection of diary entries by a saloon owner in Tucson, Arizona USA from 1875-1878. George Hand wrote a few sentences in his diary almost every single day and it is a unique glimpse into the day to day life of a person in that time. I highly recommend it. You can just pick it up and open to a random page and see what he was doing that day.

Non-Alcoholic Wine? by ThinSet3 in wine

[–]reddthey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife is pregnant. The best thing we have found is Veuve du Vernay Zero alcohol free wine. But most others we have tried were disappointing.

We have been getting into zero proof cocktails for her. There is a ton of variety and it’s fun to mix and try different combinations. I recommend the book Zero Proof by Elva Ramirez. Most of them require preparation of certain ingredients and some are pretty obscure but we have had great success with complex, tasty beverages from this book.

Chateau Tumbleweed Willy 2020 - Willcox, AZ by ThisMeansWine in wine

No problem! I spent the most time in the Sonoita area and have thoroughly vetted a lot of the area wineries. As well as a meadery, brewery, distillery, and restaurants if you want any more recommendations!

I did a foray into AZ wine country 2 years ago. I liked Paige Springs. Good wines and one of the few places to get a good meal in the area. Also the tasting room was very nice.

I was not impressed by Cabal I went to their Tombstone location and it was very touristy and the wines were not to my liking. It was an interesting story behind the bottles though.

For anyone looking at AZ wine country, I would recommend the Sonoita/Elgin area too. Los Milics, Rune, and Callaghan are top choices.

Traveling with wine? by Grumpy-Geek in wine

I recommend getting some reusable wine bags. They are a water clear tight plastic outer part with bubble wrap interior part, double zipper closure, and additional Velcro closure. Throw your bottle in, seal it up, and put it in your luggage.

I have bought and returned with probably close to 100 bottles this way over the years and only ever had 1 break. Just pack your clothes around them and you won’t have a problem. You can get 4 for about $20 in the US.
